Buzzketball Downs BC 71-56

Virginia Tech goes on the road and grabs their 7th ACC win of the year against the Eagles.

[Mark Umansky]

The Virginia Tech men's basketball team had a short turnaround following their win over Florida State on Saturday.

They had to turn their attention to Boston College and a trip to Chestnut Hill. Though the Eagles came into Tuesday night's contest without a win in the ACC, it wouldn't be as easy as it looked on paper. The Hokies had won just a single game ever in the Conte Forum, and have only totaled one conference victory away from Cassell Coliseum in Buzz Williams' tenure.

Despite a slow start and an overall sloppy showing, Buzz's bunch prevailed convincingly over the lowly Eagles 71-56. Paced by junior guard Seth Allen's 14 points and four steals, Tech capitalized on enough mistakes from their opponent to put it away early.

Up 13 by intermission, Allen and friends held serve for the final 20 minutes as the Hokies grabbed their seventh conference win and took another step above the dregs of the league. Justin Bibbs put up his third career double-double with 12 and 10, Kerry Blackshear Jr. threw together a sneaky-good bounce back game (10 points, five rebounds) and though freshman Justin Robinson's stats don't stand out he set the tone early with explosive plays to help both himself and his teammates.

There wasn't anything overly impressive about the result for Tech. BC is about as bad as it gets in big time division one hoops, and anything other than a performance like this would have been distressing, bordering on disastrous. But considering 2015's debacle in Blacksburg, the night was a sign of growth.

"I do think that we're improving in certain areas," a pleased Williams told Mike Burnop postgame. "And I do think that our guys recognize where we have to continue to improve, and that's the sign of maturing, which is encouraging considering the youth of our team. They're playing for one another, they're trying to do what we're asking them to do. With the lack of success we've had on the road over the last two years, to be able to come here and do what we did is good."

Now don't misunderstand, the Hokies won because the Eagles had the shooting accuracy of your average stormtrooper. It was clear early on Tech would let the home team shoot as much as they wanted outside the arc (closeouts were limited, and at times nonexistent), and it paid off as Jim Christian's guys bombed away to the tune of 5-28 from deep.

But let's not get carried away and say the men in maroon didn't have a few issues of their own. They turned it over 15 times (the same as BC), and made plenty of mental errors. Only half of their giveaways came from steals, which means many more were unforced. Many times they looked like a group playing in front of an announced crowd of 1,018, doing their best to simply leave town with a win.

And though they got it done, the Hokies aren't good enough to coast through a matchup. They have five days to prepare for another road trip to a bottom feeder, as they head to Wake Forest on Sunday. Tech won a thriller over the Demon Deacons in mid-January, but a trip to Winston Salem is never easy.

And now with a potential NIT berth on the line, Williams and company must cobble together a more complete outing to capitalize on their opportunity.

"Somehow we have to continue to find ways to win on the road," Williams said. "Because that's what good teams do. And I think in order for our team to continue to build and blossom, to be relevant, you have to be able to win on the road. Our guys understand that, it's a lot easier to say than do, and it has very little to do with the opponent, because they're always hard to accomplish."

A few quick thoughts

Time for an anecdote. I played ball in the York County Parks & Recreational League all through school, from fourth to twelfth grade. I like to believe I hold the record of losingest player in county history, because with nine seasons under my belt I saw one record over .500.

But my most infamous moment of futility was my initial year, which was possibly the worst team ever assembled on any level of the sport. On our 10-child roster, two quit before we even began. To make matter worse out of the eight remaining, one kid was so riddled with ADHD he screamed every time he touched the ball, one hated it so much he played Pokemon on the sideline and another was basically a 10-year-old version of Muggsy Bogues without any of the handles (he was, and probably still is, ridiculously short).

Needless to say we lost every game, by a lot. It got so bad, even the parents of the other kids started to root for us. We lost our finale 67-18. That's right, a bunch of fourth graders somehow scored SIXTY SEVEN POINTS in 32 minutes.

The point of this is that while my ragtag group of character building nerds may be the worst squad ever built, this BC program is stunningly close. And because of their ineptitude, it's nearly impossible to take anything of substance away from this win.

But if there is one thing, it's simply the ability to take care of business. How many times have we seen Virginia Tech basketball travel somewhere sleepy like Boston College and fall apart with an inexcusable loss? Too many to count.

Every time it seemed like BC would pull themselves within striking distance, a hustle play from someone (Robinson, Allen, Chris Clarke) made sure an Eagle run didn't happen. And though Allen didn't have a great followup to his incandescent performance against the Seminoles, he was one of many who did enough to cash in on the countless number of chances afforded.

The Hokies are noticeably different when Clarke's on the floor. It was unclear how limited he was by the ankle injury suffered on Saturday, but the freshman was still able to make an impact. He's far from a finished product, but the learning curve is exhilarating (and often exhausting) to witness. One time in particular he made a wonderful play on defense, hustled into the front court and promptly picked up an egregious charge. It's what you get with him at the moment, but he puts far more on the coaching staff's table than he takes off it.

"His motor doesn't stop," Buzz said of his freshman after the game. "He still doesn't have his wind. I didn't think Zach (LeDay) was great, particularly in the first half. Chris' energy overwhelms our team in a positive way. And he's getting a little bit more comfortable in what we're trying to accomplish offensively, and defensively he can be elite."

Robinson saw 27 minutes to Devin Wilson's 16. Though Wilson will still have a role because of his on-ball defense, I wonder if this ratio will be a trend to end the season. The freshman's really come on over his last four appearances (averaging 12 points, two assists and 25 minutes a night), and gels well with Allen in the backcourt. He brings more of a scoring threat, and is active enough away from the ball on the other end to take the starting point guard reigns and never give them back.

To close, I'm not always all about Buzz's patented inspirational messages, but he took Burnop behind the curtain in something he got across to the guys pregame. It not only illustrates the mentality they have going on the road, but how cognizant the entire program is of their path back to respectability.

"It's kind of like that quote you see, the guy's banging on the rock and on the 101st blow the rock splits," Williams explained. "And everybody goes 'wow you finally did it on the 101st blow', and actually that's not right. It's what happened the first 100 hits. And that's what's so hard about this, that's also what's so hard about life, you've got to do it every day. And you've got to have the discipline and the maturity with that to continue to hit."

A win is a win, now on to Wake Forest

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

True that.

One milestone along our journey to relevancy Is the ability to "bounce back" after a good outing. We seem to suffer greatly from win hangovers, and this game was like that. Fortunately BC fought valiently to keep us from blemishing their record.

I view the upcoming game against WF as a turning point. It will take a big game to beat Wake at home, they have played everybody tough. If we can summon our "A" game we will have contained the hangover to single outing, which is an improvement.

Watching the team on the "road to relevant" is priceless.

Just when I was ready to give up on this season, Buzzketball is reeling me back in. Well done boys!

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

Don't give up.

Buzz is just getting started.

Buzz is proving his method is working, and I feel it will continue to improve. The will be bumps on the way, but the upward trajectory is clear.

I like that quote.

Edit to expound on that thought for a sec.

I know this is a basketball thread but I wanna toss a little bit of credit Loeffler's way. Justin Fuente just may be the answer we need on offense and our offense might actually look pretty good in short time with him. But it has to be recognized that Loeffler hit that rock 75-90 times leaving Fuente with a much less daunting job of making our offense productive again.

Onward and upward

Agreed, good quote. I feel like our basketball team has done a lot of positive rock hitting. Are we on the right side of 50 now?

I would really love to dispute this point, but I'm just so tired of discussing Loeffler. And it certainly wouldn't add any value in a thread dedicated to a coach who has overcome talent deficiencies in two years and demonstrated actual success.

I will just let it go. It's not worth getting into yet again.

jeez dude, lighten up. I'm not saying Loeffler was a genius or deserves to have the red carpet rolled out for him if he ever comes back to the Burg. I'm simply saying that he helped weaken the rock so the next guy could finish the job. I get that you don't want to talk about it anymore, but for goodness sake, give credit where it's due man.

Onward and upward

Agreed. The talent we have on offense and depth at QB (Lawson and Jackson) were directly attributed to him. He put guys in a position to succeed. Leoffler did a lot of ground work for the program.

Robinson is really standing out in my eyes. I love his ability to shoot pull-up mid range jumpers. Also I love that he swatted someone off of the backboard. That was beautiful. Also I feel like Donlon deserves a mention in this article. That baseline j was pure.

Put in Donlon

You could tell by all the celebrations that Donlon is well liked.

It's been awhile since the Hokies have had a PG that can go get his own shot when he needs to, and play defense. I REALLY like Robinson. He's going to be a nice player.

Leonard. Duh.

Best part of a road win:

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I've been trying to decide what my favorite part of this picture is since it was posted last night. Is it Seth Allen interviewing Robinson? Buzz sweeping the floor? Perhaps it's Galloway being an 8 year old. I'm glad this is one that will hang on the wall for a while.

if only you could grab just those guys and close the frame around them, it would make a great album cover.

None of the above. Its the guy right down in front that put tape on his face to make him look like Seth Allen that you essentially miss because he isnt out on the floor. And who is that with the snow shovel in the back (Donlon?)? Where did they even get that?

Last I checked 0/0 was an indeterminate form...

Man, it felt nice to be the asskicker in an ACC game for once.

Glad to see VT take care of business on the road and come away with the W. Their inability to box out was baffling at times and VT could have easily won by 25+ if they had limited second chances by BC, but this game is one that VT has lost in the past. There is something to be said for being able to hold serve against the teams you should beat. They may not have the wins this year against the upper echelon that VT did under Greenberg but they also don't have the head scratching losses.

11-15 Alabama State would like a word with you.

Think he's referring to ACC games. Alabama St was in 2015. It does hurt our NIT chances but remember that was the first time most of these guys played a game together.

"look at this...this is beautiful, these people are losing their minds" -Mike Patrick

We play that game today, we coast, IMO. I hope selection committees value the eyeball test more so than silly RPI.

Always choose joy.

I have been conditioned to go to Boston and come out disappointed. It wasn't pretty, but they did what they were supposed to.

The growth and maturity of this team is so tangible. I enjoy watching the pieces fit together and mold into those pieces.

I can't wait to see Blackshear get stronger, but watching him off the ball is a joy. From hedging on screens and deflecting back to his defensive position. A shot goes up and he instantly is boxing out, maybe not getting the rebound but his fundamentals and really good.

Robinson and Clarke continue to show more glimpses as to while this is fun, the future is brighter.

Blackshear is becoming one of my favorite players to watch when he doesn't have the ball. His improvement over the season has been great but he still has a long way to go. He no longer commits those awful away-from- ball fouls and his FT shooting is vastly improved. He still looks a little weak going up for contested rebounds and his scoring move is very raw but he has shown me that he is teachable. Very exciting to see his game develop from where he was in November

West Virginian by birth, Hokie by choice

great touch around the basket as well

I can't agree with you more about Blackshear. I always hold my breath when he goes out for the hedge and I have to hold back from yelling "DON'T FOUL HIM!!" Luckily he is learning he doesn't have the drive the guy all the way back to the midcourt line, just have him step back and then get back to your man.

First boring ACC win for VT in a looooooong time. Feels good to be lulled to sleep watching a lopsided win in our favor

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Exactly. BC held second half leads against UNC, Syracuse, and @Clemson. All in the last two weeks.

I'm not trying to make BC a good team, but this is an ACC road-win. Moreso, it was a lopsided ACC road win. We don't have to wait until Saturday to say this team took another step forward.

I clicked that stormtrooper link hoping beyond hope that it was a stormtrooper shooting basketball.

Wish I could give you more than one leg. Many thanks.

Best anecdote ever.

I'm just going to fantasize about us winning out to close the regular season (Pitt and Miami at Cassell are totally winnable), than making it to the final of the ACC tournament to put us on the bubble with a 21-14 record (10-8 ACC). a man can dream right?

I'm not sure we would have the RPI we need to make it in.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

Yeah no chance. But it would make it interesting and probably make us a solid NIT choice.

That or the new Vegas 16 tournament.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Really? I think we would be seriously considered. Winning record in the ACC with a deep run in the tourney would look really good.

Not so fast, my friend.

Now, I don't think the Hokies will win out. (Miami is just not a good matchup for this squad) But for the sake of argument, if the Hokies did win out, and say, got to the ACC semifinal; I believe their RPI would be enough to get them in the tourney. Also, some teams like FSU, LSU, G-Dub, and Clemson would probably have to continue to fade.

Leonard. Duh.

When was the last time an ACC tournament semifinalist didn't make the dance? That'd be an interesting trivia question. Time for research.

Edit: Actually didn't take that long, it was Maryland in 12-13, and before that it was your Virginia Tech Hokies in 10-11. Sad face.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Miami made it to the ACC tourney semifinals in 2010 and went to the NIT afterwards.

VT made it to the ACC tourney semifinals in 2011 and went to the NIT afterwards

Maryland in 2013, ACC tourney semifinals, then NIT

The entire Malcolm Delaney era is still fresh in my mind.

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

We would definitely be on the bubble, but we have been left out in past years with a much better resume. As mentioned above, I think it would definitely depend on some other bubble teams fading away.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

Easily the best part of the game last night for me was seeing Clarke take those two outside jumpers in 1st half and making them. It will separate him from being a good player to potentially a great one. Keep practicing, young man!

I like the fact that Buzz seemed to be working on things when we got the lead. It seemed like the emphasis in the second half was to get the ball to the bigs down low and see if they could score against the BC defense. In the past, we have been more of a draw the defense in and pass back out to the open shooter team. To really be a good team in the ACC our bigs need to be able to generate some points 1 on 1.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

C'mon, get us to the NIT. We can do it!!

BC is close to being the worse D1 team I have ever seen. I know they have a lot of injuries but that is no excuse for their performnce. I am not going to harp on it, but I thought VT played pretty bad last night but it is a victory. I was disappointed that we could not empty our bench last night and give some of the guys some more playing time. They deserve it. Remeber BC scored with us the 2nd half and that is unacceptable. But move on to WF.

They're 264 in KenPom, which is pretty awful. However, Rutgers is 301. At least we're not the B1G and added Rutgers.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

We just toyed with them in 2nd half. That's where we got sloppy also instead of just burying them by 30. If we really focused and were intense we could've won by 30.

I did think BC still gave good effort on D in the half court in 2nd half. We just were SO much more athletic than them we got a lot of transition points

"look at this...this is beautiful, these people are losing their minds" -Mike Patrick

Shout out to the guy in the front putting his fist up before the shot left Donlon's hand, Steph Curry style.

Donlon is now 4-6 shooting and 2-2 at the line for 10 points and 4 rebounds in 7 minutes. That's damn efficient.

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

I cannot be the only one who Leday absolutely drives bonkers. I swear he gets in this "I am LeBron James" mode and does some really detrimental offensive moves. I love him to death cause his engine and will fight and scrap, but his decision making really needs a makeover this offseason.

Always choose joy.

I thought he had a really tough day. Got blocked numerous times, started 0-3 from the FT line. Rough first half.

Like Buzz has said many times, Leday is amazing because "he's just not good." He's not big, he can't shoot, he's not a good jumper, he gets too far under the basket, he's not all that quick. He's not good.

But he's tough as nails and will compete all day. He gets shots off that hit the front of the rim and have enough spin to roll in. He's perfected a rather nonathletic freethrow style.

Yes, he's frustrating. But he's also mesmerizing. He's averaging 15ppg in the ACC....and I have no idea how.

I remember early in the season he would chuck up those flat footed 3s, and nail them to my astonishment. He's definitely got a unique game.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

One thing he's really good at is knowing where the basket is. No matter where he is in the paint and what direction his eyes, chest, & shoulders are facing, he seems to have a good idea of where the ball needs to go and how it needs to go there. He's the best finisher on the team (although I will say a number of players have improved dramatically since the beginning of ACC play at finishing around the basket).

It's something you can't really teach and relatively few college players have a knack for it.

My biggest concern with this team is our seeming inability to improve the play of our bigs. Talent plays a part but just getting the fundamentals of positioning, hand placement, shot selection, and route running for better term are the basics and of our four bigs (Henry, Blackshear, Hamilton, Pierce) only Blackshear has shown a modicum of improvement on the offensive end of the floor. I have seen minor improvements to Henry's game in terms of better defensive positioning and keeping his hands off defenders to avoid a multitude of bad fouls but he still last night got one with one second remaining on the shot clock and got another because he failed to get back and ended up running over the ball handler as he sought to get into proper position. Blackshear still has his moments too but it just makes me question who from the staff is responsible for working with the bigs and what they are doing. Maybe its that Buzz needs all his bodies to run his practices the way he wants it but I for one am a bit frustrated by finally having the height and size to compete with almost every roster but being unable to utilize it because its a liability having it on the floor. The one area that should be the easiest to improve is positioning for rebounds and it likely could have the biggest impact in terms of adding scoring to the overall result by creating additional possessions. Our team as a whole is dreadful at boxing out, timing our jumps and being in the right position to start with. I know Buzz emphasizes getting back on defense so I am not as much looking for it on that end but on our defensive end it should be a priority yet game in and game out we seem to get trucked on the boards. End Rant....

When was the last time Buzz kept his suit jacket on for the entire first half? That really speaks volumes about this away performance.

The FSU game, I think. Could have been the game before that, but I remember the commentators talking about it.

Just one more win will guarantee a .500 season, correct? (not counting any postseason games)

I assume you mean .500 in ACC play in which case we need to beat Wake and take one of Pitt/Miami to guarantee .500.

One more win guarantees us a winning regular season record as we will have 16 wins and only play 31 regular season games. Two more wins will see us have a .500 record in the ACC regular season.
