TE Kalvin Cline expected to transfer

This article states that it may be due to the change in offensive philosophy. I hate to see him go. He had a promising freshman year.

I'm surprised at this news. Have I been missing something?

I would have thought Fuente's offense would suit him well. He is more of a receiver than blocking TE.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

This disappoints me on a different level because he's walking away from his commitment to the Corps of Cadets.

If you play it, they will win.

Said this on the other thread but Texas A&M has no TEs on scholarship and has a Corps program. He could be their number 1 guy if he heads there.

That would make me less disappointed by far, but I still hate to lose him.

you got this dead on! great call. hokie fireman linked the story below for those interested.

Isn't the corps design in such a way that everyone has an opportunity to leave after their second year if they decide it's not for them? It's not like he's deserting his company in a war zone, he's just decided that he wants to go a different direction to his life.

I never made any such comparison. Everyone can be disappointed that he leaves the team, but I can't be equally disappointed that he's leaving the corps without getting downvoted? I can't be disappointed that the military didn't gain another fine officer? Fuck me. I must just be an asshole.

leg up to offset.....

My wife takes the kids and leaves the house while I watch my Hokie games.........nuff said

Wow. I can't tell if there was a downvote or not because you have a net positive but I'm continually shocked by how upset people get over a lone downvote.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

In the grand scheme I could care less, but couple it with the fact that my meaning was completely taken the wrong way and yeah, it rubbed me the wrong way.

If you play it, they will win.

ahh misunderstood. Thought you were suggesting that you were disappointed in Kline for making this decision.

Unless they've changed significantly in the last 10 years...

If you quit in the first six weeks, you have to drop out of school and re-enroll the next semester. If you quit during the first year, you have to pay back uniform costs. (That right there is what got me through freshman year. After that, I was too invested to leave.)

Beyond freshman year, you're pretty much free to leave.

Now, if you're in ROTC, there's an extra set of rules there, depending on how much of your college tuition the military is picking up.

Dont think he was ever actually ON scholarship to AROTC, so no commitment for him really beyond trying to get a spot.

Its possible his knee/injury issues could have made the Army turn off to him, its a smaller force these days they can afford to be sort of picky and say no to a kid for what seem like minor reasons.

It was bound to happen, some people don't always gel with new coaches.

Marcus?

I'm putting my foot down. There will be no speak of this man.

Marcus is the exception that proves the rule.

Is he actually gone (I.e. Not participating in spring practice)? Or is this just a rumor?

Hopefully he's just contemplating and will stay. I see him as having a huge year in the new system.

Durkin must be turning heads at TE. I'm sure Bucky will still be #1 but Cline still has eligibility. Would think he'd be #1 in 2017 if not for Durkin.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Think Burke might have a little to say about next year.

Forgot about X Man. Good call.

Yea. Aaron Moorehead.

Glad Bucky decided to come back. Losing him and Kline would have sucked...

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

Is Joel Caleb still with the team? Seems like if he were going to transfer as a graduate we would've heard something by now since he already has a degree (I think?)

I was wondering the same thing. Andy Bitter noted him "as no longer here" in his review of the WR position, but I haven't heard anything about Caleb other than that. Guess we will see in a few days...

He was honored during Senior Day, the idea at the time was he simply got his degree and decided to hang up the football cleats for good.

Can anyone explain to me why Cline transferred? With Ryan gone this would have been his year to shine. I know he did not play much last year but I thought he was still dealing with injuries. The move makes no sense. Did he not like VT? Did he not mesh with the new staff? What is the story?

1) He would be still behind Bucky. 2) Texas A&M has no TEs, so he is guaranteed a starting spot in the best conference in the country. Lots of exposure if he succeeds.

Yeah, but if he couldn't see much of the field here the last couple years, not sure how you could expect him to transfer to Texas A & M and start right off the bat. Hard to imagine that a national program like them would have nothing at TE, unless they run an offense that doesn't utilize the TE much. I would still think he'd have a better chance playing here and being a productive part of the offense, if healthy.
