Buzz on Virginia Tech's NIT Experience "Critical for how we start non-conference next year"

Williams explains why the Hokies' NIT experience is important for next season.

[Mark Umansky]

After the Hokies defeated Princeton 86-81 in OT, Buzz Williams discussed the importance of Virginia Tech's NIT experience as it relates to non-conference play next season.

"You know everybody on the team, Coach, returns except for Shane (Henry)," Williams told ESPN's Jason Capel. " And we'll really miss Shane. But you know the decisions that we made in year one, were to try to put a team together relative to the roster, and their ages, where we would have everybody returning. And so the reps that we're getting in postseason, now, are absolutely critical, not for postseason next year, they're critical for how we start non-conference next year."

In the face of Williams remaining mum on the rumor mill, his postgame remarks certainly shows he has a grip on the future of Buzzketball.

The press conference video (I saw where TSL had it in their writeup) was even more convincing that he has a 3 year plan and is excited to see it through. It was more convincingly positive than his radio interview about his family choices was negative.

I'm back to not worrying about losing him this year.

I like how he includes "we".

If Buzz is trying to hide his intention to leave he's doing a damn good job of it. That seemed like a really solid sign that he'll return next year.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

The national nightmare isn't over until we have one of these (in any sport):

That's why he's my guy.

Loosey goosey. And, fashion-conscious.

He got us back to being a competitive team. If he leaves I will wish him well but I sure hope he stays and finishes what he started...

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:

NIT experience critical for how we start non-conference next year

I have a feeling Johnny Jones, Ben Simmons and the LSU basketball program would disagree.

LSU's actions in regards to postseason play certainly seem to confirm this.

Louisiana schools might be completely shutting down. They might not make to the end of this semester. Post season had to do with money. Big news for Les Miles as it would make the football team ineligible for fall 2016. Not to hijack the thread, but reasons are political.

Pardon, could I get a little more #sauce for this comment?

Everything's delicious, by the way.

Ben Simmons is gone anyways, he really could care less about his LSU career at this point. He's gonna be a lottery pick, maybe not #1 overall anymore.

He is number 1 or number 2. He will not drop lower than that.

Put in Donlon

Lots of my friends will joke around and make fun of me for being excited about Hokie Hoops being in the NIT, but honestly I couldn't care less. I see on social media how those around the country can tell that we are on the rise. I see how other teams are no longer comfortable playing us. It is great. Everything really seems to be falling into place. I am thrilled that this program is on the rise, I am thrilled by the heart this program plays with, and I am thrilled that we have one hell of a coach. Love this program with all of my heart. Keep playing ball boys!

I'm glad it looks positive. We really need Buzz to stick around until the majority of people at VT basketball games aren't wearing football jerseys.

It could be a while, but I look forward to that.

It would help if they sold Bball jerseys in the bookstore though

Great point.

There are always the "Buzzketball" shirts on TKP...

Methinks the pending rebrand might address this problem

I've been waiting for the bookstores to stock basketball jerseys again since Buzz was hired.

Can't find a good picture but I really wanted a No. 11 white script one from a few years back.

Odd to emphasize those.

Did i hear him say "6 Turkeys"?
Buzz is definitely a Hokie

I'm guessing they call it a Turkey, similar to a Turkey in bowling. I think it means three stops in a row. I know they call scoring three offensive possessions in a row a "heat". I didn't catch the potential Hokie reference with "turkey". Leg for you.

Perhaps it is just because I'm wired a similar way, but despite all I read and learned about Buzz early on, his analytical approach to everything continued to impress me. Reminds me a lot of Moneyball.

@hokie_rd

Man is it weird to be talking basketball this time of year. Usually this site is full of Hokies that can't get their mind off of Spring Football. The excitement of VT postseason basketball certainly helps the off-season be more palatable.

Not to mention the whole first time we've had a new head coach leading spring practice in 3 decades thing... Yeah, pretty crazy we're still this focused on basketball. Speaks volumes to what Buzz is doing.

Yeah, you'd think we'd be talking all about Fuente's plan, but instead we're talking about Buzz's 3rd year plan. I hope we beat BYU and make a run at NIT championship, but I'm ready for some football, too.
