I've never understood the dog. They're called the Volunteers. They have a man dressed as Davy Crockett as a mascot. Then they have a real live dog named Smoky with a person in a furry costume that patrols the stadium. So do they have 3 mascots? Do they have a mascot and a team pet with accompanying furry costume? Do they have 2 mascots and a team pet?
The best answer I've ever gotten is "Rocky Top! WOOOO!"

Yeah, but we don't have 3 of them, 2 completely different. There is only one Hokie Bird, which is assumed to be a turkey like bird, and thus a Fighting Gobbler.

Not to mention that a Fighting Gobbler is redundant. Gobblers are pugnacious and fearless fighters when the designated time is upon them. The rest of the time, they just eat. At least one legend says the Gobblers thing came from the cafeteria ladies who fed the football players, not the irascible bird, and, well, then there's Hokies...

I guess that depends on whether you consider it a school mascot or a living continuation of the eagle that prophetically landed midfield prior to kickoff in game that resulted in victory over Bama. (One of the more interesting origin legends.)

They are both supposed to represent an unstoppable force. The "Crimson Tide" comes from a radio broadcast when the announcer described a scoring run play as looking like a crimson tide rolling down the field.
I don't know any origin stories for the elephant though.

War Eagle isn't really a mascot so much as a war cry, like wahoowa. It's of unknown origin, but there are a couple of good stories.
