When he faced the media after his Hokies debut and 36-13 win over Liberty, the first thing QB Jerod Evans did was shout out Virginia Tech's defense.
"I think our defense played like it was the end of the world," Evans said. "I mean, (they) got two turnovers by Greg Stroman. Had a sack by Ken (Ekanem). Had another turnover, or interception, by 'Rell (Terrell Edmunds). I mean, they played (their) butts off today."
Defensive coordinator Bud Foster was quick to echo those sentiments, praising how his defense looked against the Flames' up-tempo offense.
"It's a good starting point for us, today," Foster said. "I was pleased with how we played. We didn't give up any explosive plays. They did a couple things early. We thought the quarterback may try to run a little bit and he did with some quarterback draws and things of that nature. But, we were able to create some plays. We were big on third down. That's real big, particularly with a team that has some no-huddle, up-tempo (offense)."
Similarly, Justin Fuente glowed over the defensive performance.
"Stro (Greg Stroman) had two interceptions -- that second one was amazing," Fuente said. "We were able to get good pressure on the quarterback. Starts with them not being able to run the football (then) becoming passing situations. I thought we really did a good job."
While the defense was playing "like it was the end of the world", the offensive side of the ball didn't see the same amount of success in the early moments of the game.
The Hokies fumbled four times on offense, and lost three. Along with the slippery balls, Evans also sailed quite a few deep passes. Combine that with a running game which at times wasn't very impressive, and it's easy to understand why Fuente thinks his team has a long way to go.
"To give definitive remarks about overall execution is a little difficult right now," Fuente said. "It's obvious. Anybody can tell that we've got loads better to get to give ourselves a chance to be the type of team we'd like to be. At times, we didn't run the ball very well. At times we made big plays in the passing game. We got the ball on the perimeter a little bit, but still not like I'd like to. Yards on the inside were hard to come by, which is why there were some bigger plays in the passing game, quite honestly. Lot of work left to do."
A concern prior to kickoff was how Evans β the newly-named QB1 β would react in his first live action. Evans went 20-32 for 221 yards and 4 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. He had some positive moments, but also made his share of mistakes.
"Some good, some bad," Fuente said. "My first impression (is) you've gotta take care of the football. I don't like the option pitch at all.
"When the pitch key's up the field, keep the ball and let's go. It's pretty basic."
Evans accounted for two fumbles, but also became the first Tech QB since Bryan Randall (2004) to throw for 4 touchdowns in a game. Evans might have added a few more too, if not for some overthrown deep balls.
"We had mistakes, for sure," Evans said. "I know on my part, I had a lot of mistakes that I am going to clean up. But for the most part it was exciting just because I get to go to war with my brothers.
"For the first game, there was a lot of emotions flying around after nine long months of hard work. We wanted to execute and show the crowd what we've been doing. I think it was a lot of emotions going through instead of actually thinking a little bit. That's what we have this whole week coming up for, to clean up the mistakes. Execution-wise it was good, but it could be a lot better."
Evans favorite target on the day was WR Isaiah Ford. Ford fell two catches shy of the Virginia Tech single-game record of 13 receptions. He hauled in 11 catches for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Ford noted practicing against Bud Foster's defense this summer ultimately helped him grow as a player.
"Going against (Greg Stroman) one-on-one every day, you've got to bring your hard hat because you know he's going to bring his," Ford said. "You know he's going to get after it and we just make each other better."
With CB Adonis Alexander suspended for the season opener, it was the aforementioned Stroman who had himself a breakout game in his place.
Stroman ended the day with two interceptions to along with a breakup and two tackles. His biggest play of the day, however, was arguably his second interception. True freshman quarterback Stephen Calvert rolled to his right, unleashed a pass that saw Stroman put one hand in the air, while falling backwards, who tipped the ball to himself for the sensational grab.
"I just (saw) the ball come out of the quarterback's hand, and I tried to get my hands up," Stroman said. "Luckily, my hand stopped it, and it fell right down to me."

Foster was more than satisfied with Stroman's play.
"He's a competitor and he showed that today," Foster said. "He has some big play-making abilities and I was real pleased and happy for him to be able to step up and make the plays that he did."
The Hokies now turn their attention towards Tennessee and the Battle at Bristol, a spectacle which feels like a bowl game in its build up and pageantry.
Foster is ready to showcase the Hokies in primetime and in front of 150,000-plus spectators.
"I'm really excited about the opportunity that we have," Foster said. "Obviously everybody's talking about the stage we're going to play on, but it's not about that. It's about the game. We're playing a dynamic football program and we're really excited about the opportunity to go play those guys."
Odds and Ends
As expected, Colt Pettit was the starter at left guard for the offense today. It wasn't until Teller was inserted into the lineup in the second quarter that the run game found its legs. Only time will tell if Teller's performance is enough to propel him back to Tech's No. 1 LG against the Volunteers.
Both Tremaine and Terrell Edmunds were quite impressive today. Tremaine accounted for three tackles and a fumble recovery, while his brother Terrell had five tackles and an interception.
Starting whip linebacker/nickelback Mook Reynolds was seemingly around the ball on every play. He contributed three tackles and two pass breakups on the day. As expected, when going to the nickel package, Anthony Shegog was his replacement at whip.

Great write up. Can honestly say I have no idea how next week will go for either team. Definitely going to be a fun one.
You can't help but be impressed by Evans play. The first fumble wasn't smart but was definitely on the o-line. The second would have been praised if it wasn't high. I'm thinking his upside is high and obviously the d-fence played impressively as expected. Good luck Vols trying to cover Ford next week.
So many positives from this game. We may not be perfect, but it feels like the ship is righting under Fuente. Will be a fun ride. I can't recall any offsides or delay of games on the offense today. That alone is a small miracle. Felt like real Hokie football today. Ready for Bristol!
No delay of games, false starts, illegal formation. I think this is a big take away. The turnovers need to be fixed but the offense certainly feels like it's in good hands.
Just need to keep minds on the game and not the spectacle at Bristol. I could see a couple of early mistakes on the bigger stage, but we def. looked better than Tenn., competition level considered.
I feel fine after that performance.
You know it
You too?
They looked sloppy early and started to gel as the game progressed.
We are as ready as we could reasonably expect this team to be for Bristol.
It seemed like Evans looked down Ford every pass play. He is going to need to spread it around a little more next week.
He hit Cam5 several times including a TD. It was a bit frustrating that on several plays our tight ends were open but didn't get the ball. That'll get worked on, I'm cautiously optimistic, just thankful we didn't lay an egg.
Man, it just feels so good to have football back. Tech won, my high school won, and UVA lost. Cheers everybody.
Your high school may very well be able to beat LOLuva.
Who is your high school??
Richmond.
Damn, Bob, that's my dream girl when I was a little boy shooting up the place on good ole Rocky Top.
Why, the mighty Cougars of Stuarts Draft!
Hoping the UNC game will be a nooner so I go to the game and SDHS 30th reunion.
Amazing photos by Mark!! Good game with plenty to work on this coming week.
Favorites are sweet capture of the VT on the football and new season, new pancakes!
Ford seemed to get hung up with the db on several of the deep balls and disrupt the timing on the play. But man, he and Evans are lethal on the back shoulder throw.
I wonder how long Teller will stay in the doghouse. The line and team just seemed to play better when Wyatt went in.
Shegog came in for Nigel, not Mook
Nigel is who went off, but when that happened, Mook moved over to nickel and Shegog went to whip.
boomroasted
semantics.. depending on the defensive play call and offensive formation, Mook is playing Whip & Nickel at the same time. He doesn't move over to Nickel when Shegog comes in. He stays at Nickel and Shegog plays Whip.
You know what makes me happy? LOLUVA gets routed by Richmond, and nobody makes a thread about it... It's just expected at this point.
The implosion going on over at the sabre is pretty entertaining too. People already calling for Bronco to be fired and saying they won't win more than 2 games this year when last week they were sold that this would be an 8 win season.

They actually talk about football there? I have always imagined that it is just a big discussion over what flaver jolly rancher makes zima taste better.
In my limited experience, they talk more about VT than they do their own program. They have little brother syndrome something fierce...
Actually they are discussing the pre-game lecture series. I'm sure it was quite the educational experience before getting throttled on their home field.
Today when the scoreboard would show the DBU when our DB's got interceptions my wife said "why is it spelled wrong it says D-B-U it's supposed to be B-U-D" and then I explained to her what DBU means and it wasn't misspelled and we had a good laugh about it.
^That laugh may get you couch duty.
You laughed she glared at you when you looked back at the field.
Side note a lot of people around me didn't know what DBU meant. Also no one chanted DBU which is what I think that graphic is for.
There is a small but growing group in the NEZ that has caught on and started chanting.
NEZ is where it all starts. Spreads like wild fire from there
Also I noticed people were starting to yell "Mooooook" whenever he made a good play. I like that. Reminds of the Boone days.
Or Huuuuuumes!
Yeah the chant was definitely catching on but the cadence got off and messed everyone up. There was an initial bass thump before the D-B-U bass thumps and most people started the chant on the premature bass thump instead of the right one so they may need to tweak that a bit. I was in the NZ and it started off good but then failed miserably by the 3rd or 4th iteration.
They will learn because we will teach them.
I was chanting!
I love my DBU shirt but have found that a lot if people ask what it stands for. I have also found it's not nearly as cool when you have to explain it. Anybody else encountering the same?
Keep spreading the DBU gospel brother!
Did McMillian and Teller both sit out the first QTR?
Given how much better we looked with them in I hope Fuente was trying to sandbag for UT.
Pretty positive McMillan was in 2nd series.
Personally I was very happy with the game. No dumb penalties. We did have dumb turnovers but I expected a slow start getting used to the offense. Evans looks pretty darn good and just needs to be more accurate. Ford is legit, will be sad to see him leave after this year. Whatever Teller has done to piss off the coaches he needs to fix because we clearly need him in there. The D looked surprisingly good to me. Stroman, Mook and others played very well. I thought we would have some mistakes and they didn't. Good on Bud.
Highlight of my day: Two of my close friends who are UVA fans dismissed their loss. One said, "Look it was a bad football game, but it's ok. At least we didn't run it up the middle every play." Whatever they are smoking in Charlottesville, I'd love to try.
Tomorrow the tailgating prep for the Bristol begins. Tennessee Sucks. If anyone wants to play ring toss prior to the game, I'll have a 4 way set up in the American lot
Me when I realize how well the defense played and we didn't really even miss Adonis Alexander....
Stoman's play definitely puts pressure on Alexander. If Alexander is the true starter, Bud definitely has great depth in that position, but it was Liberty, not TN, UNC, etc.
Good job Hokies. 1-0
Regardless, Stroman's play makes me feel better about playing those spread teams like UNC later this year.
Evans accounted for two fumbles, but also became the first Tech QB since Bryan Randall (2004) to throw for 4 touchdowns in a game. Evans might have added a few more too, if not for some overthrown deep balls.
Very interesting. Definitely some things to work on, but at least they have something to work WITH, as well.
What's nice is, there is more than just a QB to work with. Third time this week I've said it, but Fuente knew what he was doing going after Evans. He's not a finished product by any means. Nor is this team. There is work to do and they know it. Big, bad Tennessee is up next so we can all hope it gels sooner rather than later, but experience dictates that we fans will need to wear a heavy suit of patience this year.
True. He had some off throws. But rewatching the touchdowns...those were some well placed balls. Especially that last Bucky TD.
Defense looked well-schooled and buttoned down. Guys looked like they
knew where they needed to be. Pretty refreshing after last season.
Offense looks like it has lots of potential. Evans has talent and some of those
passes were something. Also like the fact carries are getting spread among
several backs.
Watching Terrell was a joy. Having him and Motu flying around the field was just awesome to have LBs at a good level again. Had me like
Do you mean Tremaine? Tremaine LB, Terrell CB.
I did indeed. Was a little hung over writing this.
Terrell played well too,so either way it made sense.
On a day where our QB obviously didn't play his best game, he completed over 62% of his passes and threw four TDs with no picks.
This might be a fun season.
Seriously, a rough game with a QB rating of 161.
Whats a good game going to look like. **squeeeellllll**
Those pre-snap penalties are killing us.
-Turner Gill
Thoughts:
-had to use the roster link during the fourth quarter, not for bad reasons.
-how 'bout Stroman?
Without the benefit of film analysis, anyone else think the OL play was only average? Didn't seem they were moving the DL as much as I'd hoped.
Interior OL play was below average without Teller in. That was the most troubling thing about the whole game to me. They collapsed the pocket from the interior many times in pass pro and the run game was pathetic against an FCS team.
I want Teller in the game every snap and Shai and Travon to split the carries, none for Sam.
Yep, pretty much agree with all. I love Sam Rogers, but he's never been an explosive back, and has never broken any long runs. No issues using him in multiple ways, but as a "traditional" tailback, we need to get away from that, and quickly.
Doesn't Sam need to get at least a few carries to make play-action effective when he's in as the blocking back?
IIRC Liberty has a couple All-Conference players on the DL, I'm not 100% positive though, if true that means they at least have some significant talent for a lower level school
Anyone notice if Newsome got in the game at all after being No. 2 on the depth chart?
Did anyone notice that the offense is ranked #52 in total yards, and ranked in the top half of the NCAA for the first time in a long time? Also, the defense is ranked #9, which is impressive even though it's just the first game against a weak opponent.
Quarterbacks on the front page of espn stats for QB ratings...first time since......since Tyrod, maybe earlier.
I noticed that we have our best winning percentage since leaving the Horseshoe.
So did we play press man most of the game? Some robber coverages? Any zone?
