I always think it's fun to take a look at Hokie Sports as well as the ACC and NCAA stats pages throughout the season, just to see where we stack up. Some interesting things that I found this morning:
Third Downs
Third downs have been key on both offense and defense, as the offense is currently converting on 46% of 3rd downs so far. The defense ranks 5th nationally in holding offenses to a 20% 3rd down conversion rate.
ACC Strong in Passing and Team Defense
We all know Jerod Evans is having a hell of a season. He is gaining 293 yards per game, but that still ranks just 5th in the ACC behind passers like Lamar Jackson, Mitch Trubisky, Eric Dungey, and Daniel Jones (Duke's QB, for those like me who don't know). That list doesn't even include Brad Kaaya or Deshaun Watson.
On defense, VT is ranked 9th in the nation in total defense (264 ypg), but notice all of the ACC teams in the top 10. If this list is expanded, you will see 6 ACC teams in the top 23 in total defense.

Other Offensive Stats
Not offensive, just offense-related. The Hokies are 14th nationally in passing efficiency. What you have done in August if you knew that would happen 4 games into the season?
The run game, statistically, is unimpressive. McMillian, even with his long TD run vs Tennessee, is averaging 4.4 per carry, and is only 3 yards ahead of Evans for total rushing.
Jet sweeps have averaged 4.7 yards per carry. Has the Henri Murphy experiment been put off until a later date?
Tech has a 89% scoring percentage in the red zone, and 68% of red zone possessions end in touchdowns.
The O-line is allowing just 1.2 sacks per game. Brewer would have killed for that.
Lastly, the offense has scored 20 touchdowns in 4 games. To put that in perspective, the 2008 Hokies scored 29, and in 2014 they managed 31.
Not trying to step in on Joel's territory, but I always enjoy seeing some of these stats on paper.

Comments
To build on that, yards per attempt is usually viewed as a very indicative stat for passing efficiency. Evans is 15th at 9.4ypa. To put that in perspective Tyrod was at 8.7ypa in 2010.
Do not forget, Evan's stats are deflated because 3 of the 4 games, he only played 3 Q.
Didn't we pull him at some point in the 4th vs Tennessee as well? He still hasn't finished a game.
He hasn't finished a game yet? But I haven't seen Lawson get any playing time at the end. He's going to transfer if we aren't careful
This is the reason that YPA is a good stat to use, vs "volumetric" measures like passing yards.
Nicely done, thanks for this
Guys, the ACC thinks Tim Settle returns punts. The dream is coming alive
What in the wide world of sports is a going on?
Settle wore 25 last week. So therefore he had to have been wearing it again on Saturday. The number changing is what threw off their stats.
ACC must think Ken Ekanem is a hell of a fine QB.
My Guess is that the latest team roster they has was from BC when Big Tim had the 25 and they assumed it was the same guy wearing it this week.
Edit: Beat me by a minute, \_()_/
hahah nice. tim can point to the stats and say he's better than greg, who is listed two below him. hilarious
