This goes beyond just ESPN... When I lived in Memphis (4.5 yrs) very few people A. knew the difference between VT and UVA, and B. were unaware of the difference between West Va. and Southwest Virginia (*from Roanoke), even after a thorough geographical explanation.
I will say, if one of the producers happens to be a UVA grad, I'd have to chuckle and say that's gold medal trolling.

Oh yeah youre right. Its amazing how stupid some folks are. People Ive met around the country that claim to be football fans, they dont even know West Va is another state. And this has happened more than once. Moron: "So yall have Va Tech, UVa and West Va" Me: No West Virginia is in West Virginia.
Or in their warped minds they think VT and UVa are the same school. Even after explaining they are two different schools a couple hours apart, it just doesnt compute. I dont know what they would do if they ever see the two playing against each other on TV, maybe thatd help. Whats sad is these folks will be wearing a Florida gators hat or something and claiming to know college football.

In all fairness to the Gator fan, if your only knowledge of Universities is based on college football, it's easy to see why one might think UVA is the same school as VT. UVA has been so irrelevant for so long in football, it might be hard to realize they are an actual entity.

While technically true, not particularly relevant to Tech football. Honestly, given his injury history, I doubt Benkert will even be LOLUVa's starting QB when they play us lay another goose egg against us come Thanksgiving.

Had no idea we were the only team that had 10 wins under a first year coach last year. I know the cupboard was left far from bare, but that just shows you how tough it is to come in and win right off the bat, especially coming over a string of mediocre seasons.
I'm not sure when/if we start competing for national championships, but I'm damn sure we have the right head man to lead us there one day.

I'll give you the serious response...
I forget who coined it, but it's basically because you go to this studio in Bristol where they run you from set to set (Mike & Mike, SC, First Take, CFB Live, etc.) in short order, like a car getting run through the wash.

Frank Beamer made a similar comment during the press conference when he was introduced as head coach. People thought he was crazy to talk that way about Tech. Fast forward 30 years, and his successor can make the exact same comment to a national audience, and be taken totally seriously. Pretty solid example of Frank's legacy.

Eh, I'd say the general perception right now is probably close to "ok, we'll see, you have a chance to make that happen if you and Bud stay long enough". Back in 1987, I'm sure nobody was paying attention to a little school in southwestern Virginia, but if they had they would have just started laughing, turned around, and left.

Believe me, there is absolutely a sense of "if they get their shit together" aspect of the VT program right now. People see this program in a populous state that produces elite recruits like its their job in a division and conference that presents a golden opportunity, with a fan base that is known to travel well, and we just haven't stepped up to the plate, yet. Did you know that the average family income per student at Virginia Tech is the highest in the ACC? Bet you didn't, but that's a little factoid that I learned from the Alumni offices earlier this summer. We also are in an active state of increasing our admittance numbers toward becoming one of the largest schools in the region.
Everything is set up for us to break through in a major, major way the 10-20 years. We just need to have a little patience and allow it to come together in due time.

But I have friends who are fans of schools like Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, FSU, etc. They'll start paying attention when VT wins the ACC or makes the playoffs. Gotta beat Clemson. Gotta beat FSU. Gotta dominate the teams in the ACC Coastal.
I absolutely think VT is on the right path.

in other news took a peak at le sabre and theyre doing a season prediction thread and roughly 80-90% of their fans are fairly confident of beating us, because you know.... the game last year was such a nail biter
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
The really funny ones are the ones who think they'll only beat W&M, UCONN, Duke and us. Because, like we saw this past year, they really do seem to bring the heat to this rivalry.

HokieVision did a behind the scenes video with Fuente and his daughter while they were in Bristol. I really enjoy the part where Fuente said his 3 daughters being in the car and asking for him to play Enter Sandman.

UHHHHH..... Kurt Benkert will take over at QB this year???
That would sure kill any chances for a perfect season, or even a win.

Yeah cause what this site really needs is another long drawn out argument about HoF inductees...
I agree 100%. I haven't logged in and commented in ages. I can't stop laughing at this.
Thank you, it only took me four years and eight months but I knew I'd get there.
I only regret that I have but one up vote to give for this comment.
Typical SC reporting

Yeah, ESPN isn't helping.
Though who has heard of Benkert?

yeah like in North Carolina you've got UNC, App State, Duke, NC State, Wake Forest, East Carolina...oh wait
#ChangeTheNameToEasternCarolina

Bet he throws more TD's to VT than he does to his own team.
Is there a place I can put a prop bet on that?
talk about a plot-twist
Talk about "jumping the shark".
Really thought this was Lawson's year
Rotated right out of Hooville, it seems
I feel like someone buried the lead here.
No kidding!
IMHO better screen grab would have been Fuente's daughter's kung-fu grip on the lunch pail.

Have to do it.....
I really like this guy.

Didn't Clay Helton win 10 games at USC? Maybe he wasn't considered "new" because he coached a few games last year as well?
Not to take anything away from Fuente. Dude is the man.
Well maybe just two...but I'll take it!
Does anyone know why it's called the ESPN Car Wash?
edit: after reading the comments

because Disney nixed calling it the ESPN Clusterf*ck of the Same Show Repeated Endlessly with Different Titles
because they're a big ol derp
Cuz clearly all the reporting they do are from wash-outs?
They thought Fuente was Beamer.
I'll give you the serious response...

via GIPHY
is that young Max Kellerman?
Fuente's choice of tie color coupled with the Benkert gaffe by ESPN had me thinking TKP got hacked and this was a troll job.....
Come on, Coach! Can't go on ESPN wearing the rivals colors on your tie!
Would've been the second thing ACC related today that was hacked...
Probably why they said "Benkert"...
Shit damn hell! The tie color! Fu is jumping to wva! Oh lord 3 daughters. He so screwed!
Yeah, someone needs to take that out of his wardrobe...
Actually, it's an indication that we own LOLUVA.....kind of like a hunting trophy....oh, wait...we have a trophy from that too!
52-10 tells me he's a really terrible double-agent.
Gotta love Coach Fuente!
Sudden Death is a treasure
The open wall shot of "the Hokies are back" gave me a Miami taste in my mouth that tasted like sun tan lotion, empty inside, and full of bad choices.
Let's not let that be a thing!
Fuente
sjust exudes someone who is about to fuck up some blue bloods shit all over the place!Edit: dammit
Did... did you just call him "Fuentes"...
I know I typed in Fuente without an s. Damn autocorrect and not proofreading
I didn't see that QB trade coming....

To be fair, nobody is taking him seriously but us, for now.

Good luck wit dat! Miami Bak!!!
Fuente's calm but "I dare you to push me" demeanor reminds me of a certain coach in Tuscaloosa
Lane Kiffin?
Think he's talking about Sarkisian /s
"I dare you to push me", not "drink me"
in other news took a peak at le sabre and theyre doing a season prediction thread and roughly 80-90% of their fans are fairly confident of beating us, because you know.... the game last year was such a nail biter
those delusional ass hats will keep predicting that until it happens
Use of the phrase ass hat always gets a leg from me
That's because the ass is the legs' hat.
MIND. BLOWN.

Anyone have links to any of the other segments he was on?

C'mon Enginerd, you have to embed YouTube videos on TKP, or else no one will look at them: /s
*L* Good point. I guess that is what I get for TKP'ing while working.
"we want to contend for and win national championships"
What is things never said by a UVA coach?
