Khadim Sy to Rejoin Virginia Tech Basketball Program

The Virginia Tech athletic department remains committed to timely news dumps.

Sy's return adds a talented post player to a Hokies' front-court that lacks depth.

"I am very happy that Khadim rejoined the team today," Williams said. "This has never happened in my career, and since his departure, all parties have worked to make sure that this was the right decision for everyone involved. Dream is an outstanding young man who will be able to spend this semester focusing on his academics and getting better in all aspects of his life, on and off the court. I believe this is the best possible move for Khadim and I know his teammates welcome him back to the program."

Sy appeared in 32 games as a freshman in the 2016-17 season, starting 28 times. He averaged 4.0 points and 2.7 rebounds per game, averaging 11.4 minutes per game. Sy will be able to practice with the team during the spring semester, but will not play, while earning a redshirt. He will have three seasons of eligibility beginning with the Fall 2018 semester.

I'll copy my comment from the other thread:

Genuinely have no clue what the fuck is happening. Buzz said he hadn't heard from Dream since he transferred. But here we are.

Copying my comment from the other thread:

Always thought Dream had legit ACC talent. Hopefully the redshirt season will help him a potential breakout next year.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Soooo now we should be expecting a transfer or two after this season, right?

My response to this every year under Buzz Williams will be, "Yes that is correct." Seems to be the nature of high major basketball these days.

That's true. I'm afraid to speculate on who might be on the way out, but I'll do it anyway.

-While I'd hate to see Outlaw's VT Career come to such an unceremonious end, he seems to be the one who would have the least impact on the team as a whole.
-Maybe Bede or Pig since they're both Freshmen, they seem to me like pretty similar players, and neither is getting the starting PG job until their Junior seasons anyway.
-Even though NAW hasn't been putting up the one-and-done numbers I expected, I'm still not ruling it out.

I'd argue that Outlaw is the best shooter on the team when healthy. So I doubt he's going anywhere. IMO Bede is the next starting point guard after Robinson so I don't expect him to go anywhere either. Top 100 player who has showed major flashes on both ends of the court when he has seen time this season.

I'm not saying these guys aren't great pieces of the puzzle and I'm certainly not wishing any of them away. Purely speculating for speculation's sake on a slow day

Outlaw is a great shooter, possibly the greatest 3 shooter we've ever had, but he has to apply for a medical hardship waiver to play next year and I'm assuming he'll graduate in May if he hasn't already. Maybe he chooses to get a paycheck next year and play overseas.

I also like the potential of both Bede and Jackson, but the fact of the matter is neither of them is going to unseat JRob until 2019. Would one of them rather go somewhere where they have a chance to contribute immediately, a la Ty Garland?

Those are very good points.

AD Vasallo would like a word about your 3 point man comment.

@vtscottyb

Naw cuh, Outlaw shot 48% from 3 last year, AD's best year was 41.5% (edit:) and he dropped to 36.7% in his Senior year when they moved the 3 line back to where it is now.

Shit, ya got me. Still loved me some AD 3's though!

@vtscottyb

No doubt, just hide the Dr Pepper

Dell Curry?

I know he was a great shooter, but was the 3 even a shot in college basketball when Dell was around?

Lol nope it was universally implemented the year after he left

Looking at his stats, I was a little confused. There's one season where we must have played team(s) that were testing it out because according to sports-reference.com, he had 7 3PAs in his Junior season and none in any other. He hit 4 of them that year for a cool 57%

It's a possibility every season, especially as we recruit more & more high-talent players. It's not guaranteed to happen though. We certainly have room on the roster for Sy without any attrition.

Sy puts us back up to 13 scholarships. We have 3 (Nolley, Kabongo, McAllister) joining the team in 2018, while 2 (Bibbs, Wilson) are graduating. Fullard would gonback to walk-on status if Outlaw gets his hardship waiver.

This is the scenario I see playing out. Especially since the class of 19 is now completely up in the air. Only real negative I could see from this is with Sy extended an extra season, it could hurt our slim chances at Armando Bacot which would be a tough pill to swallow. Bacot is a Duke lean but might be an odd man out there depending on who goes Pro early from Duke..

This doesn't hurt us at all with Bacot.

Appreciate the break-down. I don't know how, but I wasn't aware we only had 12 guys on scholarship right now. The numbers always work though, right?

We have a walk on on scholarship and bibbs and hill leave.

Free Hugh

Glad to have him back next season. Wish we had him this season. That's all I've got.

Hmmm.... didnt i read he also went to baylor after supposedly leaving community college?

Wonder if he's going to be a walk-on or if he's going to be a scholarship player? It'll be nice to have some front court depth next season, hopefully he can develop during this redshirt period.

I'd be shocked if he agreed to come back as a walk-on. He could easily transfer and get a scholarship for next season instead.

This is very good news.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

I think you're looking for a thread about our upcoming bowl game.

OT: WHSV3 news in Harrisonburg in "must watch" sports just said VT would be taking on North Carolina AT&T. That's right. It was actually printed that way on the screen and spoken out loud. I'm Ron Burgundy?

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

Does that really surprise you? Their news and sports writing/grammar has been horrendous for years.

We always joke its the communications majors at JMU's senior project to do a few months at WHSV.

Laura Mock is my girl tho.

2018-19 projections:

3 scholarship bigs with 1 walk on with 3 years experience in the system. 1 Sr (WO)/1 Jr/2 So

6 scholarship wings. 3 Sr/1 So/2 Fr

4 scholarship point and 1 walk on with a year's experience. 2 Sr (1 WO)/2 So/1 Fr

The 2019 class can take 4 recruits + any attrition.

Mannnn...potential is through the roof with that lineup. So much experience and talent.

@vtscottyb

I wouldn't mind adding Armando Bacot or Qudus Wahab to the list of post players, Aundre Hyatt and Mekhi Long to the wings, and Anthony Harris at point in 2019.
