USA Today Article featuring Bud Foster

Longtime Assistants are a Dying Breed

Positive feedback and a productive meeting with then-Clemson athletics director Terry Don Phillips late in the 2008 season left Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster feeling good enough about his chances to land the Tigers' head coach vacancy that he brought the opportunity to his three children.

This thing is potentially getting ready to happen, he said. We're excited for you, his kids replied. And then, Foster recalled, they asked a question: But if you get the job, can we still have season tickets to Virginia Tech games?

Didn't realize how much he considered / was considered for Pitt.

Bud is a class act, just like beamer. Time to earn that paycheck tonight. Hope bud has taught his pupils well

I remember eating in Dietrick and seeing Bud Foster walk by occasionally. A sort of hush would follow him as people's conversations trailed off and they'd nudge each other, "Holy shit, it's Bud!" I'll donate dollar one to make sure he gets his own statue outside Lane.

Damn, that would have been rough if he went to loluva

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Wonder if Bill Roth has shared his experiences with Foster.... Went to UCLA for one year and from what I understand, missed VT so much that he had to come back.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

UVA should have hired him instead of London. Get a great defensive minded coach AND hurt VT in the process. Idiots. They recovered though by hiring a mormon guy with no ties to the east coast... lol
