Ask TKP: What is Mike Young's "system", and what kind of players is he looking for?

There have been several references to the fact that MY is a "system" coach. We just saw a system coach win a National Championship last night, so my curiosity is piqued. Is there a basketball expert out there that has an idea of what MY's teams are going to look like?

Along with that, there are a lot of "so-n-so is in the transfer portal, let's get him" comments out there. I would imagine that the type of players MY is going after would depend on the system that he's using. If we could get an idea of his system, then we could figure out what sort of player he would be recruiting, and then our recruiting prognostications would not be so much all over the map. What kind of player is MY looking for?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Transfers - I would hope for the best, but VT is going to be very late to get involved in some of the better guys as they've already started taking visits. We'll see, but Young has to try and keep as many in the fold as he can to get a serviceable team next season.

From what I can tell, Mike Young has been adaptable to the skillsets of his players. In his press conference when asked about playing style, he referenced man to man defense and sharing the ball on offense specifically from what I remember. I did a little digging when his name was being floated early on, and this is a good article about Wofford that Deadspin published (yes, I know their reputation, but it's actually good analysis):

Fletcher Magee's Shooting Remade Wofford. How Far Can It Take Them?

But where Curry elevated the three-point production of a Davidson program already heavily reliant on the deep shot, Magee's brilliance forced his coach's hand. This Wofford team isn't like the ones that came before, mostly because Magee isn't like any player Wofford has ever had.

Longtime Davidson coach Bob McKillop was early to the approach that an increased reliance on three-point shooting across the sport. In the five seasons before Curry's 2006-07 arrival, Davidson twice ranked in the top 20 nationally for three-point scoring distribution, and never below No. 58. Curry elevated the program, as he tends to do. But he and his Davidson teams also set a tone in the SoCon still evident today, even after the Wildcats left for the Atlantic 10 in 2014. Wofford finished this regular season as one of four SoCon teams with a top 20 three-point scoring distribution, joining Furman, The Citadel, and VMI. This has been the trend for the Terriers in Magee's four years in Spartanburg, as his Wofford teams have never ranked lower than 58th and as high as seventh in three-point scoring.

That trend is a strong deviation from the four Tournament teams that preceded Magee's arrival, including the 2014-15 squad that made it to March the year before he arrived. That season, the 28-7 Terriers scored 28.6 percent of their points from behind the arc, 172nd in the nation. No Wofford team since 2007-08 had ranked in the nation's top 100 in that category before Magee arrived, which accounts for every NCAA Tournament team of Young's long tenure.

People who complain about system coaches and system players are just mad at how good those coaches and players are.

I don't know a ton of basketball Xs and Os, but I think your questions can best be answered by looking at Wofford's roster and seeing where the holes are in Tech's by comparison (yes there are lots I know). He rostered 5 guys over 6'8", four of which registered solid minutes, and two of which started regularly. CMY would be best served by landing one or two grad transfer bigs depending on KBJ staying or going, and a couple more HS recruit bigs to be developed. We'll also need a pure PG if Bede departs.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

So we will look like FSU in a few years?

Is coronavirus over yet?

This is a decent analogy but lets wait to see how he does in recruiting. Hamilton has a BIG reputation so height seems to just land there. Not sure that same thing will happen at Tech but there will be more than what we had under Buzz for certain. You will also likely see less roster turnover under Young than you did with Buzz so it wont be a rotating doors of bigs that come to school and don't play.

Short answer is a motion offense with strong perimeter shooters and a solid big or two that have soft hands to be able to distribute. Think former Tech offense but in a more traditional size distribution once Robinson got hurt, but more effective from the perimeter. Not as much dribble penetration. The other area that I have not seen his teams employ much of is transition baskets, which to me have been a critical factor in the Hokies improvement over the last five years. A ton of momentum changing plays and leading to game changing runs in many cases.

Defensively he prefers man to man but I think that it might pose a huge issue his first season unless he brings in an entire roster. The man to man style he prefers means having a deep bench to keep fresh legs on the court. This style though is one area I have some deep concerns with, especially in the early years because if we are not bringing in equal or better talent, man to man defense leads to a high number of fouls in many cases as it forces many one on one situations.

As for the level of athlete and type, that's going to be hard to determine considering this is the first time Young and his staff will have the ability to recruit at an ACC level. Obviously, the defensive knack for man to man without fouling will be one factor. I think this is something we will just have to wait and see. I also would not necessarily put stock into the first year gets because some of those may end up being to have bodies on the floor more so than they fit everything the staff is looking for.

there are quite a few Wofford highlights from this past season; here are a few

my first blush reaction is that they set a few more picks on the perimeter for their shooters and put it up a little sooner on the shot clock...so perhaps less focus on how many touches and where.

I will say, it could just be that they're winning in these games, but they look to be having a lot of fun.

Every time I see the abbreviation MY, I hear Mike Young referring to himself in the third person.
