23 in the Coaches poll as well

How did Baylor get ranked at 10-11?
One of these things is not like the other things, one of these things does not belong
They are taking the concept of quality losses a bit far, but it appears to be paying off.
I thought that only applied to SEC teams?
HellYes.gif

So we need the CFP ranking to have us #25!
We probably will be.
Did anyone else notice that 2-loss Michigan is in the top-10 for their showdown with Ohio State this weekend? Seems rather...convenient...
From what I understand they had a midseason turnaround in the same sense we did. The only difference is they did it against tougher competition. I kind of get it.
Yeah basically they started to cal plays Shea Patterson could run.
Not really. They lost to #13 Wisco back in Sept. and #12 Penn State in October. Not exactly something to "turnaround" from. They jumped over Wisco this week to snag the #10 spot so gameday can go gaga over a "Top-10" OSU/UM game this weekend.
Something switched during the second half of their game vs PSU. Much improved offensively.
Ironically the OSU-UM game is on Fox. Fox's own promos are calling it a #2 v #12 matchup
Well, it's the AP poll, and they really don't have a dog in that fight.
They won't be #10 in the CFP rankings, which are the only ones that matter. ESPN and Fox are both still basing the rankings they show in their promos on last Tuesday's rankings, not today's AP rankings.
The best part about all of this is that with both VT and loluvanus sitting at 8-3, VT is ranked in both Coaches and AP at #23 with loluvanus in the "Others Receiving Votes" list.
Yet, ESPN still has them as a favorite over us. ...or maybe they just haven't updated their stuff, I dunno.
I'm curious to see what the spread is going to be
Early look appears to have either pick 'em or VT as -1 dawgs
ESPN bases their "predictions" entirely upon their FPI computer rankings system, which I'm fairly certain weigh the entire season equally, with no room for obvious trends like our dramatic in-season turnaround.
That makes sense then.
Did anyone else notice some guy voted for NDSU Lol
I'm looking at that 17 spot as where we belong.
Dear God no. That thing is still jinxed from a few years back.
And yet ESPN's fpi 64.6% for UVAh this Friday and Vegas had the game as a pickem. We still got a lot to prove. Hope the guys and fu are up for the occasion.
Vegas has been trending towards the side of the computer algorithms, and since most of them weigh each game the same our fairly consistent turnaround from "one of the worst P5 teams" to "almost certainly top-2 in the ACC" over 2 months averages out to "slightly below-average P5 team" in most of them, Vegas (and likely many bettors) are a little reluctant to deviate too much from the norm. Even so, since 64.6% roughly correlates to a 5-6 point favorite, the fact that it's essentially considered a pick-em is a nod to our recent resurgence.
I'm not a gambling man, but if Vegas has lolva as the favorite that seems like easy money. I'm very skeptical that line would hold.
According to Vegas Insider, the line opened as a pick-em and has since moved to VT as a 2-point favorite, so you're right. But, the point is that if you based the spread on each team's recent trends, we would probably have opened as a bigger favorite, and it's probably due to Vegas (and bettors) relying more heavily on numerical rankings systems that weigh the whole season equally.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but betting lines are not Vegas guessing who will win or what the score will be. The lines are set and adjusted to get approximately 50:50 betting on either side which means they win regardless of the outcome.
You are correct. But, as the analytics have improved and become more popular, people have started using them more when betting (see: Bill C touting SP+ for guessing the top x "best bets" in a given week) so Vegas has to account for it when setting their initial lines.
Side track but I always wondered how that works.
If you took the bet as a pickem and the line moves, your bet still holds as a pickem? Is that right?
Correct, except in some sports such as horse racing, where you get the odds of when they go in the gates regardless of when you picked which I've always found fascinating and not very fair
Losing 45-10 at Home, at night, to THAT Duke team tends to stick... like gum on your shoe.
Duke has been awful. It's like that game had the opposite effect on the Blue Devils.
Nobody likes you when you're 23.
It's a sign!!!!!
Upvote this to +23, no more and no less
Good thing you commented. I didn't notice. Briefly had it at 24.
I actually don't like this. This team has played so much better this year when they are the underdogs..even if the opening line has the whose as a favorite it gives the illusion we are the favorite
We were favorites in GT and Pitt...
Normally I would agree, but I think this only fuels the fire for our players. It shows the hard work they are putting in is getting some recognition. This group has shown they are coming together each week.
It's also loluva, motivation is not an issue, underdog or not.
So basically we now need a 23 good vibes thread vice 25? 🤔
I'll apologize in advance for my some what sarcastic saltiness below:
For starters.... it's a "Superstition Thread" not a "Good Vibes"
(I'm a little salty I couldn't create my Volume III thread for this week and something got created before I could drive back to Roanoke form the game Saturday night with a wrong title and concept.)
23 means nothing, 25 does. We can't just start creating superstition threads for every rank we ever achieve.
It's not broke (3-0 so far), so lets not try to fix it yet.
sorry i rained on your parade. for what it's worth the +25 threads go back before this year, and we had a +16 thread for the tournament game. and they've been called "homer thread", "good vibes", or "superstition", so doesn't seem to be a real consensus
oh, I've only TKP'd like 3 or so years and thought the "Superstitious 25 Thread" I made last year was the first of its kind, so if it's existed before then, then I apologize.
ESPN has us -3 for Friday.
Vegas opened it as a pick-em, almost immediately changed it to VT -1, and within a couple hours had it at VT -2. I'm curious to see if it keeps moving over the next day or two.
To be ranked 23rd for a three loss team is an accomplishment. It does reflect how the season has turned since the fateful Duke loss. And the AP Poll knows that as well.
