Sources: NC State's opening game at Virginia Tech schedule for Sept. 12 has officially been moved. The teams will play on Sept. 26. Decision comes in the wake of NC State athletics taking a pause because of 22 new positive COVID cases in the atheltic department.— Pete Thamel (@PeteThamel) August 26, 2020

1.) Move the UVA game to 9/12. Both teams now have a BYE week 1 and I think it makes sense to play week 1 if possible with a BYE week 2.
2.) Move the Liberty game to 9/12 since both teams currently have a BYE. Less than ideal because we would then be playing 8 games in a row with no BYE, but we would get an opportunity to iron the kinks out before we play UVA, and we would then have two BYE weeks late in the season, which could be advantageous.
Now that I look at UVA's schedule, they also have a BYE on the 26th. So it makes in extremely unlikely they would move our game up to the 12th, giving them a double BYE on the 19th and 26th before they play Clemson on Oct 3rd. Then again, they may need all the recovery time in the world after we pummel them and before Clemson steamrolls what's left on Oct 3rd.

So what happens if we have an outbreak (later in the year)? Since we don't have another bye week, do we just move that game to then even if they other teams isn't open that same week? Do we have to forfeit?

We do have a bye on Thanksgiving weekend, plus the ACC scheduled the championship game for either December 12 or 19. So that gives them an extra week to postpone games.

Without knowing the details, it seems like we caved too easily to nc state on this. Obviously I want to see us play the game, but this only hurts our ability to win and I would have liked us to try to force their hand to play with what they have.

I think in all likelihood, every team is going to need at least one impromptu bye week; I imagine there's going to be a lot of shuffling throughout the season.

Me neither. However, I was extremely pessimistic about MLB I have been pleasantly surprised with how things have turned out. That success gives me some hope for Fall Football.

I guess. I don't follow MLB closely at all but seems almost daily I'm getting notifications about a game being canceled. I guess that works when you play that total number of games. But, college football....I don't know.

I mean, nobody's playing this year with an expectation of bowl games or the playoff even happening anyway, so what does it matter if a game here or there winds up canceled? It's already kind of only a half-real season that's only proceeding for money and for everyone's enjoyment and not for real stakes. In a normal season a game not happening has huge implications but this year I mean we already have 2/5 power conferences playing 0 games so canceling random individual games over Covid concerns to avoid outbreaks doesn't seem like a big deal at all to me.
Hopefully it doesn't happen often but there's not really a definitive postseason structure in place right now for the season that's going to be completely derailed if LSU is 9-1 but Oklahoma is only 8-1 and Clemson is 7-0 with games that didn't happen along the way.

My expectations tanked at the end of week one when half of Miami had a confirmed case and the cascading schedule impacts, and then the following when a handful of St Louis players had confirmed cases, and then there was the news of a couple Cleveland players breaking isolation protocol... after all of that things leveled off and i've been able to put my attention on the actual games instead of worrying if there would be games.

Good news is that when we're up 38-0 (bro) on UVA at half we can rest our starters and play some young dudes and not have to worry about eligibility. It's like a built in bye week.

Well this fucks up my plans. We had our wedding the weekend of the 26th and cancelled it after the schedule was blown to hell and reorganized to be a small immediate family only event. We cancelled our hotel rooms as well. Luckily we reserved 4 rooms at the VT Inn but that's still 4 short of how many we need and now the hotels are all blocked out.

I gotchu fam
Has the game been moved? I can't find a thread to confirm! /s
Can we move the Liberty game up? They don't play anyone on the 12th.
Playing 7 straight weeks is a lot less bad than playing 10 straight 🤷♂️
Can we just not play Liberty?
No we have to. ODU isn't playing this fall
I'm sure Liberty would be fine with us playing someone else, as long as they got to stand in the corner and watch
That is brutal. Well played.
If this was reddit, I'd give this comment gold. Choked on my lunch while reading. Hilarious.
If this doesn't go plaid, what are we even doing here? Take your upvote you magnificent bastard
Wait, my fly is down and it's black water. Maybe a little Doobie Bros for the intro? Oh Black Water....
wait, Liberty is still on the schedule??? WTF? I thought we got out of that nonsense. Dammit!
you have my vote, move Liberty to game 1. Would like a game to knock the rust off before we take back the cup.
UVA can have all of the replica trophies they want but the real thing needs to stay in Blacksburg.
I'd prefer to have 2 games, 1 cup as well.
Alternatively we could move back Liberty to the 28th and move Wake to the 7th so we're playing: 5 games, bye, 4 games, Liberty, then Clemson.
So 5 bye 6 as opposed to 10 bye 1.
Updated with the announcement from the athletic department.
One of two things I would like to see happen:
1.) Move the UVA game to 9/12. Both teams now have a BYE week 1 and I think it makes sense to play week 1 if possible with a BYE week 2.
2.) Move the Liberty game to 9/12 since both teams currently have a BYE. Less than ideal because we would then be playing 8 games in a row with no BYE, but we would get an opportunity to iron the kinks out before we play UVA, and we would then have two BYE weeks late in the season, which could be advantageous.

You KNOW UVa isn't going to agree to move their game up.
The first domino...
NC State has ordered all students to leave student housing. Not sure how this will affect the football team but we might be looking at a week 2 bye.
ABC11
so, rather than literally follow the definition of self-isolation they are instructing everyone to disperse?

Yep, the whole state of North Carolina is handling this pretty poorly.
So what happens if we have an outbreak (later in the year)? Since we don't have another bye week, do we just move that game to then even if they other teams isn't open that same week? Do we have to forfeit?
The short answer is nobody knows or at least the ACC hasn't said. It feels more like they are saying "Let's just wing it."
I imagine that the conversation in that scenario would resemble something similar to this:

We do have a bye on Thanksgiving weekend, plus the ACC scheduled the championship game for either December 12 or 19. So that gives them an extra week to postpone games.
We usually have a bye thanksgiving weekend but it was scheduled earlier this year for some reason
Without knowing the details, it seems like we caved too easily to nc state on this. Obviously I want to see us play the game, but this only hurts our ability to win and I would have liked us to try to force their hand to play with what they have.
and we thought we got bad press from the ECU breakup. Imagine the press from not being flexible in the middle of a damned pandemic
It's going to happen, and I think we are putting our players at greater risk of injury by messing with the bye schedule
I think in all likelihood, every team is going to need at least one impromptu bye week; I imagine there's going to be a lot of shuffling throughout the season.
Yeah, I think the COVID policy has to be one of being pretty open-minded about it.
Just play a few games and see what happens.
I'm hoping the ACC has some backup plans to accommodate this kind of thing. Maybe should have settled for fewer games overall.
I literally just upvoted both you and tbjHokie's comment. Both are 💯
Agree 💯 - we were put in a crap situation here by NCST. We can't say no, as the PR would be terrible. Yet, we just had to sacrifice a bye week. Sucks.
That said....I just hope we get to watch some Hokie football this season. I'm not yet convinced.

I didn't really think that MLB would have much of a problem. There aren't that many players and there's very little contact during games.
