When you think about it it's kind of insane that the true freshmen playing right now could play this entire season, play 4 games next year, and still not have an official "freshman" season until 2022.

I'm FAMMMMing so hard right now! We were QB play short of dominating dook with a walk on secondary. It's clear we need HH2 next week to have a chance against UNC. But the D played with one helluva effort and Herbert is awesome!!!

I had completely forgotten what having a real run threat felt like, and it feels so good to rediscover some of the same feelings I had when I was in school and had Darren Evans, then Ryan Williams, then David Wilson...I'm not gonna go as far as to say that it takes me as far back as when I was actually getting into VT football and we had Suggs and Jones on the field at the same time, but give me a few more games and I might change my tune.
Log in or register to post comments about the Virginia Tech Hokies
David Wilson was my first impression of VT running backs, and he probably set the bar too high for me. It's always cool to see other VT all-star backs in youtube clips, but when David Wilson was on the field, you knew he was gonna have a good day and do something you'd never seen before.

We had a nice run there for a while. I started watching VT football only from 2003, so Kevin Jones was my first intro. Brandon Ore was a good one in terms of talent, and the Imoh-Humes tandem was fun too. There was that long drought between 2012-2019, and even though it is only two games against two not so great opponents without all of their players, it still feels good. Vice has done a nice job creating an identity ... now we need to recruit to it. Would be real nice to become the Wisconsin of ACC and keep attracting good O-Line and RB kids. And kudos to the D for the many 3 and outs for the opponent, which wears down on their D, and makes our running game even better. Great overall effort.

I know David Wilson is the name that pops up when thinking of the last great VT RB, but I was racking my brains to think of someone in the interim who was a significant threat. I can't think of any. No one seems to be able to even put together back to back great games. And against ACC competition.

Suggs ran a 4.44 at the NFL combine (aka a 4.27 in the old hand-timed days when every VT player had a ridiculous time) and IMO was even faster before the injury. He wasn't DHall or Eddie Royal, but the dude could run. Was one of the fastest guys on the team.
But your point still stands and Evans is an excellent example- wasn't a burner but he had good vision, hit the hole hard, and broke arm tackles for big gains.

^^^^^this..... such a clean game from a depleted defense. I get that Duke slashed them pretty good in the 2nd half but at least they played disciplined football.

Seriously, and I can't imagine how much sleep he's lost over trying to work around all of this...he sounded pretty much completely exhausted in the postgame presser just now. Gotta love that enthusiasm from Tapp to the D Line in the 4th quarter too, he was basically just feeding them energy.

We had a white boy db get an int, Duke should not be allowed to football anymore. Also need to get another qb in there for UNC. But ugly win still a win so I will take it

I'd like our chances to win in regulation better if I knew we'd have our whole defense back next week. UNC has a good QB, so having large sectors of our secondary out is not ideal.

Rewatch "Party" party tonight at 8:30. Just me and a friend so plenty of room (and bourbon) if you want to watch and social distance. I-40 west to 421 west. Main Street Kernersville exit N. No. Just woke up and drinking morning coffee. Feeling really good for how much I had last night. Looking forward to watching again tonight. Was I drunk when I posted "free bourbon"? Yes. Will I stand by that tonight? Yes. Will I drunk post again tonight? Probably not - I don't look at devices much when I have company.

Team win. Love what I see from this team. We have an edge that we did not have last year. Very excited about the future of our defense in J Ham's hands. Great staff and a multitude of coaches who can call a game in a pinch. Even when we give up yards, I feel we keep the play in front of us and live to fight another down. It's refreshing.
On O - love BB's mettle. Didn't have the best game, but he has legit talent. We have 3 QBs who can start and win a P5 game. Also Herbert is legit. A true playmaker and bell cow back. Something special in him and Blackshear as a 1-2 punch.
I like it. 2-0, let's go beat the Tar Holes.

When it actually looked like football would happen back in late August I said it would be the ultimate test of depth and coaching, and well, here we are.

At the very least the entire coaching staff deserves even more kudos than we gave them last week...we didn't have our best guys on the field, but everyone who did get out and play gave pretty much EVERYTHING they had, and I absolutely love it.
I still have no idea where this season is going to go, but we're gonna have an incredibly deep team in terms of actual game experience come the start of the 2021 season, and I'm so ready for it. Additionally, games like this, where we get the 3rd/4th strings into the game and give them major responsibility to play with the 1s and make plays, are the sort of team-building experiences that you just can't create in a regular season.
Even if we had lost today I would've loved the effort I saw on the field, and I'm just so incredibly proud of these guys - they're out there giving their all with day-of notice, and I'm SO impressed.

I get how everyone is dealing with their own COVID/injury situation - but it feels like ours has been especially rough. I didn't have a lot of hope heading into the season after losing Farley, postponing games, and seeing our injury report week one. But I have to say, the coaching staff has done an incredible job with the guys on the field and I am so happy to be 2-0.

Nice dig down deep and get the job done win. Offense responded enough when Duke got close and depleted defense got the job done when they needed too.
Two-thirds of the way to believing that we have an offensive line that we have a legitimate running game based on a line that can actually run block. Happy, but still being cautious. Similar results against UNC, and I'll be starting to believe.
Let's take one more and go 3-0 vs. the state of North Carolina!

I would like to blame this win on my ability to build a fire pit which allowed me to relax with some Longbranch by Wild Turkey. Which means Mathew McConaughey had his hand i the win.
P.S. I'm pretty lit and didn't even watch the game yet! Go Hokies!

Actually, she is probably better than me at just about any home improvement project except for carpentry/wood working things.

I know duke and NC state are not the strongest opponents, but the level of dominance we have shown in our run game were unmatched in recent years even when we played against FCS teams. I gotta think this is going to be a strength even when we play against the UNC/Miami or even Clemsons of the world.

I think I'd argue that this game was as close at it was in part due to Tavion's rough start. On the first drive of the game he had a long ball fall into the breadbasket and didn't pull it down. He was closely covered but I thought he should have had it. Then the muffed punt fiasco. He turned it around later but I'd wager that this game would have been less stressful had we gotten off to a better start, and early in the game those two plays stood out.

We won. It was way closer than necessary (their special teams TD, our fumble in the red zone) but it's a win gorrammit
Celebrating at the campfire, I'll watch the game on monday!
FAM.
To borrow a phrase from Ty at The Solid Verbal, win your clunkers. And a game where you're down 7 DBs counts as a clunker.
Add to that Duke doesn't seem to be as bad as their 0-3 record would show. Also, we just made them 0-4 FAM!
Fuente has done amazing at recruiting these transfers. Herbert is incredible and the others are proving their worth nearly every play.
Go Hokies!
Reed is a beast.
FAM, if we keep winning, I'm fine with being transfer U. Let's goooo!!!!!
FAM - SOMEONE CALL RYAN WILLIAMS AND PLEASE ASK IF HE CAN OFFICIALLY HAND DOWN THE MIDDLE NAME OF 'MF' TO KHALIL 'MF' HERBERT, FAM!!!

Just all kinds of FAM today, and frankly, the commentary said it best. We've won with 3/4 of our team. What happens when we have a full team?
It's Carolina week, FAM!!!!
We had a white boy db get an int, Duke should not be allowed to football anymore. Also need to get another qb in there for UNC. But ugly win still a win so I will take it
This Triangle alum is very happy with Fuentes unbeaten record in ACC NC stadiums
Fuente has never lost in NC
He has, just not in the regular season.
I dunno the announcers last night said we won the Belk Bowl last year so.... Maybe?
I assumed he was referring to the win in the 2016 Belk Bowl and just didn't know we were in it last year.
We also played in the ACCCG
That game was played in Orlando
How about to a NC team in NC?
His only loss to a NC team was Duke last year at home.
FAM!!!That Oline in second half just opened up some huge lanes for Herbert .
Sooooo what's going on with HH?!
Not enough practice
Let's be honest - this is shaping up for next week to be another 3 QB's throwing passing touchdowns in a 6OT win against UNC. We all know it.
I just want another W fam, especially over a top 15 UNCheat
I'd like our chances to win in regulation better if I knew we'd have our whole defense back next week. UNC has a good QB, so having large sectors of our secondary out is not ideal.
I like our chances cuz God's a Hokie:

Convince me that Kansas has a better RB than Herbert...
They let this guy sit on the sideline? Guess that's why they're Kansas.
FAM! I opened a brand new bottle of whiskey received on my birthday for last week's game. Had another drink today. Apparently, as long as I drink it on game day, we win. Science!
Ok, u must only have one drink every game day from that bottle. Make it last!
Result: Best birthday present ever...

Obligatory: My Man gif

Bruh, tell me about it. Get your down and distances down...brutal to watch
My favorite was when we scored once it said "0th and ___" instead of TOUCHDOWN
Mine was when Duke punted on second and five.
Duke should have abused our secondary. Thank god for Herbert.
Pretty sure you need a QB to abuse the secondary...
I'm calling on French for his comment on the TD run by Burmeister.... I'm a common folk observer and after watching it in slow motion, I observed several amazing blocks by EVERYBODY in our O-line. Can't wait for his analysis!

Cody played in the NFL and was first team All ACC in 2009.
Tyler isn't quite that but I'm happy to have him ready to roll when his number is called.
That's what we thought about Grimm early in his college career, too.
Can't wait for French to tell me what I saw today,, but what I think I saw in the run game I really like.
Kaleb Smith and Hoffman pulling were very noticeable on this TD. Kaleb had his guy engaged the whole time and I'm just so impressed with our WR blocking this year.
Me as well. The defensive front for Duke is legit. One of the best we will see this year. Great test for this team, and they played well.
