VT-PITT game to require masks for players at all times

PA requiring in-game masks for all players in our game this weekend. Not sure how well this is going to work.

Someone get Tapp a face shield ASAP, no way his mask stays on.

Wait they have to wear them even while playing? Working with one on sucks but man would playing a full football game would be brutal.

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

This is when it would be helpful if we were an Engineering school. Would be cool showing up in helmet, pads and Bane masks.

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

Fun fact, this scene (Gotham City Hall) was filmed in Pittsburgh outside the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research in July when it was fairly hot out. The backside of that same building was used to shoot the Blackwater Prison escape exterior shots.

And the scene where Bane blew up the football game was at Heinz Field.

Pittsburgh has kind of a Gotham feel to it in general.

Just cancel the game (and season) already

we have to cancel this game right? Like WTf

The Pennsylvania secretary of health issued the new order earlier this week. It states: "Coaches, athletes, and spectators must wear face coverings while actively engaged in workouts and competition as well as when on the sidelines, in the dugout etc. unless they meet an exception in the Face Covering Order. Section 3 of the Order provides an exception that allows an individual to remove their mask if wearing a face covering would either cause a medical condition, or exacerbate an existing one, including respiratory issues that impede breathing, a mental health condition or a disability.

"The Order indicates all alternatives to wearing a face covering, including the use of a face shield, should be exhausted before an individual is excepted from this Order."

So, the last sentence leads my non-lawyer ass to believe that a face shield could be used instead of a cloth mask

Correct:

The new Pennsylvania mandate does say plastic shields may be used as face coverings, as long as they cover "the nose and mouth," extend "below the chin and to the ears" and leave "no exposed gap between the forehead and the shield's headpiece." Some NFL players have worn face shields that attach to their helmets, which satisfies the NFL requirement for mask use during practice, but others don't like the shields because they create breathing issues.

yep. If you can argue that football players going full tilt with a mask on could be a medical risk, you can use the face shields as alternatives. At least that's my interpretation.

I interpreted it as 'if you don't want to wear a mask, try a face shield. If you don't want to wear a mask OR a face shield, you better have a good medical excuse'

JMecca's comment above validates my interpretation.

have these been used in-game yet? I remember the article but it didn't seem to be taken on by anybody. Maybe this is the weekend they get implemented.

I mean, good on us for making something to help us prevent the spread to others, but the issue here is we're going in to 'rona central with Pitt, right? Did the research account for the masks preventing the inhalation/contracting the virus?

edit: emphasis added

I doubt there is any real enforcement mechanism which would compel players to comply. If the state isn't handing out tickets on the sideline to individuals, there's simply no reason our team should follow that policy.

The thought of the sideline officers just handing out tickets made me laugh.

As soon as possession changes the offense is greeted with a pile of citations.

(add if applicable) /s

The offense deserved a bunch of citations last week for non-mask related issues

I understand why this is happening - Pittsburgh is having its worse case numbers yet (it was in the high 100s/low 200s this summer, it is now above 500 some days). And testing isn't perfect (about 5% of people who test negative with a PCR test actually have it, much more often times with rapid tests). Plus there is all the potential of travel exposures (false negatives traveling with the team, additional people when flying/driving to a game, etc.) but I feel like there are better things to do before making players wear masks on the field. They could enforce sideline mask enforcement and restrict fans again long before this had to occur.

It's like how the City of Pittsburgh just issued a voluntary stay at home order. What is the point of a toothless order if you're not going to close indoor dining, bars, gyms, etc.? It's not going to stop the people who already don't wear masks out? It's just going to make things shittier for the people who have been trying to follow the rules the whole time.

Let's keep the conversation limited to what pertains to our game tomorrow. For all other topics, please see the very extensive video below that Joe&Co put together explaining how COVID conversations need to be conducted on TKP:

Unfortunately, governments - federal, state, and local - are real good at making things shittier for those who follow the rules already. Love to put more rules for people who were not following the original rules. And the people who broke the earlier rules just break the later ones. Nothing to do with COVID. It has been happening for decades. Probably for centuries, but I'm not that old to know. Think new gas cans or layers of rules to prevent pouring 5 microcuries of beta-emitting P-32 down the drain in my old lab while cancer patients at the hospital across the street are being injected with (and having it pass through their bodies and eventually into the toilet) many, many, many more times that of beta/gamma-emitting I-131.

I seriously wonder how often the people who come up with these rules actually think they are doing anything useful or if they know it probably won't matter but they have to pretend like they are doing something to justify their salary.

Postpone the game, you fucking idiots. This isn't perseverance in the face of adversity, this is stupidity in the pursuit of tv money.

That sweet sweet spurtle tv advertising money?

Looks like players on the field WILL NOT HAVE TO WEAR masks. The mandate will apply to everyone on the sideline (I think) but not players actively in the game.
