The Sun Bowl is the ninth bowl game canceled because of COVID-19; the Bahamas, Celebration, Fenway, Hawaii, Holiday, Motor City, Pinstripe and Redbox bowls are the others.
The Sun Bowl pits teams from the ACC and Pac-12. The ACC has now lost four bowl games that it had tie-ins with (Fenway, Holiday, Pinstripe and Sun)
Not that I think we deserve to go to a bowl this year but it simply may come down to the number of available bowl games on that streak coming to an end.

Would rather we just get the streak over with while Fuente is still here if it is ending. I mean given the choice of us making it or not, would rather we make one, but won't be upset if we do not. Better to let the new person come in with a clean slate.
On the bright side, if we lose to UVA and also miss a bowl, there are zero reasons left to keep Fuente as he would have destroyed every streak we had.
Even if we beat UVA and go to a bowl, there are zero reasons to keep Fuente around
The money thing and firing him right before signing day are potential reasons for Whit to hold off. Not that I think he should.
So you'd want to force kids to go to Tech against their will by delaying firing Fuente? Also, is it monumental coincidence that his buyout goes down Dec. 16 and that's also the first day of the early signing period?
It actually is a coincidence. His buyout goes down every year on December 16. That just happens to be the Wednesday signing day falls on in 2020.
Then I find it to be an amusing coincidence. And one of little consequence if there isn't a coaching change.
Uh I don't know about you but I believe there's never a good reason to lose to UVa.
But...but he kept the Black Diamond Trophy!!! /s
By the time the bowls actually get here I'm not sure we would have enough team left to play in one.
I'd actually be shocked if ANY bowl games are played
My ideal situation is all the bowl games get cancelled, Fuente moves on (one way or another), and our next coach can come in and get us to a bowl game with the talent on the roster next year, and since all bowl games were cancelled this year, keeps our bowl streak alive.
This has been my hope as well. I also want to sneak in a UVA win with a replacements roster just to rub it in the Hoos' faces, but that's just asking too much and would probably do more long-term harm to the program.
I love how they announced that every team would be bowl-eligible a few months ago when they probably knew full well at the time that none of them would be played except maybe the NY6 and playoff.
People didn't know anything like that back then. That's why there were rumblings of starting the season in December or January, because people thought it would get better by then.
Dont think the streak makes it another year at this rate which might be best for all included parties. We have no business playing any bowl games and that might allow for a cleaner cut at the end of the year. Dont get me wrong I would hate to see the streak end but this year is a perfect culmination of problems.
We had a tie in with the Holiday Bowl? wow that's a good bowl and new tie in for ACC
it's 2020 so it does not count some say...
Let the bowl streak die. It serves no real purpose and only gets mocked when we use it to buoy our relevance.
Insert Ironman he's not wrong gif thingy...
Having a bowl streak is better than not having it. That said, I do not think breaking the streak will move the needle in any way. It is likely that we miss a bowl this year but there will be very few actually played so the streak will technically live on with an asterisk.
Not really unless we finish 6-5 in which we'd normally get a bowl. Can't really place an asterisk that says our bowl was cancelled if you wouldn't be eligible for a non-cancelled bowl.
I personally agree but there may be chunks of whole conferences that don't even play six games. I think the season itself will have the asterisk even if we know it is BS.
The NCAA waived the 6-win requirement for eligibility this year. If you were not under sanctions, you were eligible.
Yes I'm aware but do you really want the bowl streak to have an asterisk that it was kept alive on a technicality because covid made us eligible with 4 wins? We'd be so easily clowned.
The Bowl streak sorta has an asterisk on it now with the extra game against Marshall. It's lost it's luster at this point. When we were building the streak with 9+ wins every year it was a big thing. Now, it's just be bopping along and feel like that's our goal post during the year; not anything beyond that like division title, Conference Championship, NY6 bowl, etc...
Even though Marshall was a last minute add, we were supposed to have another game that got cancelled, so maybe an asterisk? I think
ifwhen we get back to 9, or preferably 10 or more, win seasons again, we'll want that streak to still be alive. We'd be able to say, "yeah, we had some down years, but we were still able to keep it going."I've never understood this view. If the bowl streak had no meaning even with 6 wins we wouldn't be the only team with this many straight bowl games. Even winning just 6 games in a year for over 2 decades is something only a handful of teams have done in modern college football.
Read the rest of my comment...said I feel like this is the bar that has become acceptable...just make a bowl game. To keep the streak alive. That's a lame goal. And it feels like a consolation prize. "Oh, yeah, we made another bowl!!!!" Meanwhile being out recruited and boat raced on the field in games we should win.
Yeah we were already getting mocked for having to add a 12th game against Marshall to keep it alive.
Frankly, if you can't get a bowl in 10 or 11 games it's worthless.
It wasn't an extra game it was a replacement of a cancelled game.
Does that change the point of my post?
Edit: rereading this thread and the fact that we have to even say this to gaslight ourselves into saying the bowl streak doesn't have an asterisk shows how much we've lowered our standards in the last few years.
Nobody is saying a 30 year bowl streak is as good or close to beong a 30 year 10 win streak. but having a 30 year bowl streak is still impressive.
None of this answers my original question though.
Everyone else has 12 games to get to bowl eligibility and yet we're the only one with the streak, so yeah, maybe not as impressive as you'd like, but look at all the schools we're ahead of. We're in good company if you look at the list of active streaks. Link Do you think everyone else got their streaks by having exclusively 10 or more wins/season. If so, we wouldn't have had the longest 10 win streak either.
Just the stats.
In Alabama's 16 bowl streak, they have 4 seasons under 11 wins. 3 of those 4 were within the first 4 years.
In Oklahoma's 21 bowl streak, they have 4 seasons under 10 wins. One of them being the first year. Only 1 year below 8 wins. 15 seasons with 11 or more wins. And a natty.
In Wisconsin's 19 bowl streak, they have 5 seasons under 9 wins. Two of them being the first 2 years. 7 seasons with 11 or more wins.
In LSU's 20 bowl streak, they have 5 seasons under 9 wins. Two of them happened in the first 3 years. None of them below 8 wins. 7 seasons with 11 or more wins. 2 titles.
In Georgia's 23 bowl streak, they have 7 seasons under 9 wins. Several under 8. And one with 6.
In Virginia Tech's 27 bowl streak, we have 10 seasons under 9 wins. 5 of them with 6 or 7 wins. 6 seasons with 11 wins, none with more.
So ours isn't as impressive, but we also aren't a blue blood. We got our streak in some years by beating teams like Miami and FSU before they were chump teams. And again, we're still ahead of all those teams, which means at some point they had a season with less than 6 wins, and for us, it's been almost 30 years.
The way I see it, having the streak isn't nearly impressive as losing it is damning. The bar is so low, it should be easy for us to keep it going and not give it a second thought. Certainly don't hold it up as why we're an "elite" program. When we fail to make even that standard it just means we've fallen THAT far.
It is easy to make a bowl it is not easy to make 27 straight. Definition of streak. To me it is opposite from what you have said, it is impressive we have had 27 straight but not earth shattering if we break it. It is damning if not making a bowl becomes common.
In the context of our streak though, it's pretty damning when a former perennial 10 win team can't muster 6 wins in a conference.
While that is true, we'd usually play 3 out of conference teams that weren't all that difficult. This year, our one out of conference game, while we should have beaten them, wasn't the same type of cellar dweller we'd schedule in other years. Two of those and we'd be bowl eligible already. Also, I'm not as convinced we'll lose to UVA as everyone else seems to be. Plus, if all bowls are cancelled, there is no asterisk. But if a lot of them play but we don't because some were cancelled, I'd say our streak ended, not continued with an asterisk.
In other words, we rely on cupcakes to keep the streak alive, then the one year we can't play the cupcakes, we lose the streak. Doesn't that kind of tell you the streak is meaningless anyway?
Everybody plays cupcakes. It is still an apples to apples playing field.
Has anybody said otherwise. You have basically said good let's just kill the streak we didn't deserve it anyway. I am saying we absolutely deserve the streak, it just isn't something that means a whole hell of a lot in the grand scheme. Nobody has argued we haven't regressed from the perennial 10 win team. But there are 6-9 win teams in bowls every year too and nobody else has 27 straight. It is what it is.
Additional thought: we haven't downright sucked in 27 years. Nobody makes that their goal, but it still says a lot about the stability of a program (thanks Beamer). So it isn't as much an achievement as a lack of failure.
Again, it doesn't matter much at this point, but why would not going to a bowl ever be better than going? Why would having an achievement others don't have be bad, asterisk or not. I sure ain't jumping off a bridge when the bowl streak ends, but I would always rather have a hokie game to watch during bowl season.
As for being mocked, that is something that comes with the territory. We were mocked for being Chokies when we were winning ten games a year. Fans mock each other.
Crazy to think, but if Wake loses it's last 2, along with us, it'll be up to the bowls to decide which team gets in (This assumes a contractual ACC bowl needs someone). If Clemson and both ND get into the CFP, then it's definitely over.
Right now the bowls make their money by selling ticket allotments to the school. Right now, those ticket allotments might be sold to the school, who can not legally sell those tickets. So we might be better off not going.
Historically, we get picked for better bowls because we travel. Not going to happen this year.
This is why, with COVID cases climbing like crazy, I think they'll cancel the bowls. Maybe they have the playoffs, but just think having the bowls while being unable to sell many tickets will cause them to cancel. It's gotta cost the bowl a decent amount of money to have the bowl and if they can't make enough back, it doesn't make sense to have them.
Right, why have a meaningless bowl with no fans? Or at least plat them on campuses. or a "bubble".
Also wonder how many schools will take the fiscally responsible route and decline to go to a bowl if the bowls force the ticket purchases? I know that combining US Universities and fiscal responsibility is kind of an oxymoron, but with all of the screaming about budget shortfalls and cutbacks, it would be totally irresponsible to accept if some second or third tier bowl game was played and a school was invited to it under the terms that they had to purchase gobs of face value tickets to then try and resell. Don't most lose money in a normal year with mid-to-low tier bowls?
You would think that terms like that would not be required by a bowl game that is actually played this year, but I would not put it out of the realm of possibility that some might try or that some schools would be dumb enough to take it.
We belong in the... toilet bowl... am i rite?
...presented by Roto-Rooter, held in a field next to the Southerly Wastewater Treatment Plant in Cleveland, OH, and will be aired on the Paramount Network at 3:30am on December 24th.
If it's anything like that bowl game against Rutgers in the pouring rain, it'll be presented by 2000 Flushes
I'm already over it... when does the ACCBB tourney start?
March 9th
Not the last I would imagine
Edit: rose bowl follows suit
