I don't know- the side step at 1:02 and his release look a lot like TT to me.

@CraigThompsonVT

Tavierre Thomas?

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

I like his silky smooth running style and calm body language in the pocket. It looks to me like he has a nice feel and touch when throwing over the top or to certain spots on the field between coverage. I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something that looks a little off on throws where he's trying to put a little more zip on the ball. I'm sure someone else has the right word for it, but it's escaping me at the moment.

There's certainly something to be said about this being against 7A comp in Georgia. He led his team to an 11-1 record with the lone loss coming in the 3rd rd of the playoffs.

On MaxPreps his Junior stats are listed as: 63% comp, 1812 yds, 13 TD, 3 int + 553 ruyds, 5.4, 5 TD.

I can't quite put my finger on it, but there's something that looks a little off on throws where he's trying to put a little more zip on the ball.

Mechanics needs a little work, but I didn't see a lot of deep balls, so may not have the arm strength, yet

Edit - watched the wrong highlight film at first.

Power 5 Offers: Duke, Georgia Tech, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest
Other notable: Liberty, Utah State, and got a look from Texas A&M (no offer)

On the 247 crystal ball predictions, he's listed as an Athlete - but his profile is still a dual-threat QB. 3* on Rivals for what it's worth. Also notable that Virginia Tech has offered two of his offensive linemen (an OG where VT is his only offer, and an OT with 3 P5 offers - both unranked).

Glad to have someone in the boat, looks like he's got some potential all over the field. Without getting into the minutia of every recruiting thread from the last two years - I will always take a kid who wants to be a Hokie, and call me crazy but anytime we sign someone I feel the potential for some big recruiting momentum. Let's GO!

*edit: According to MaxPreps he also plays basketball for the #1 team in Georgia.

Right in line with the Justin Fuente ceiling, really.

So small tidbit about Farrell - he doesn't do the camp circuit because he plays basketball as well for the #1 team in GA (has two D1 offers and I believe like Isaiah Ford that's his first love), may explain why his offer list / recruiting rankings doesn't match up with his film.

Additionally, there are a lot of unranked guys for the 22 class right now because they missed the entire 2020 camp circuit/on campus testing. It's not uncommon for guys to land on the radar in that camp circuit before their junior year. That didn't happen for these 2022 guys.

It's going to be a wild year in recruiting with there being so many guys that weren't able to get any junior year film because the season was cancelled.

Gobble Till You Wobble

Agreed. There are a lot of factors involved that could make this a really tough cycle in 2022 and I think the recruits may get the worst of it unfortunately.

1) Much like the 2020 cycle, with less film/camp evals, you will see schools hold more spots in the 25 for transfers who are more known quantity, when in other years they may have taken more high school recruits. There were about 400 less HS recruits signed by FBS schools this cycle compared to the previous cycle.

2) In 2021 the super seniors will not count against the 85. As it stands right now, by 2022 schools will be expected to land back under the 85. The blanket year of eligibility given to everyone on a college roster this past season means there will be at least 3 more years of potential "COVID induced super seniors" BUT without the leeway with the 85 that will be given to schools next year. This means there might be a lot of schools taking even smaller 2022 classes than 2021.

3) As we've discussed above, this cycle of kids will have less film, less camp work, and less on-campus evals.

Really tough year to be a recruit coming out of high school in this cycle, especially for fringe guys. Fringe P5 guys will fall to G5, fringe G5 guys will fall to FCS, and while this will probably help some lower level teams out, I bet the total number of kids landing full scholarship out of HS will again be smaller overall, which sucks.

400?? That's a wild number. I wouldn't have guessed it. Was that solely because teams held more sports for transfers than before or do you think there were just less kids offered and maybe programs took less than max too?

Hoping there is a change to the rules to accommodate all the kids who got an extra year. Like, maybe the the "super seniors" that decide to stay for that 1 extra year don't count towards the 85 limit on a sort of rolling basis every year

Was that solely because teams held more sports for transfers than before or do you think there were just less kids offered and maybe programs took less than max too?

I think it's another instance of COVID accelerating change that would've happened eventually. First of all, there's the issue of 'super seniors' taking roster spots - that's definitely a contributing factor. However, there's also a lot less tape out there on high school recruits due to an entire football season (and 7v7 season, and camp season) being missed (due to covid). As a result, it's a lot riskier to take an HS recruit (because you haven't had a chance to accurately scout them) than a transfer. With a transfer, you have 1-3 years of tape on their performance; so they're less likely to be a bust.

Why would anyone want to commit to us if fans don't support them? He's a great get and is taking a chance in us. You crap on him for not being good enough.

Ah, so no inside joke, I just missed what "DB" stood for in this context.

David Bowie

Oh yeah, that makes sense

In fairness to DC, he's not crapping on the recruit, he's crapping on the coaches.

Onward and upward

The comment itself isn't so bad in any other thread than the commitment breaking thread.

To the greater point, if we are looking for star ratings, we don't even know where he might end up rated. And, regardless of rating, I will not second guess any recruit coming off the board this early in the cycle.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

I think in this case his reputation precedes him. The comment, in relation to the comment he's replying to, is objectively accurate. But due to the contentious nature of his posting style and reputation people are going to view it in its worst light. I'm fairly certain that if anyone else on here made the exact same comment in the exact same spot it wouldn't be in the negative 30s

Also,

I've noticed recently that I have a serial down-voter. I don't really care that much but I would like to know who you are and why you're serially downvoting me. I don't like the feeling of having pissed someone off without having a chance to mend fences. So, whoever you are, let me know what I did to piss you off and I'll try to correct it so that you don't have to hunt me down in every thread just to downvote me. It will save both of us some angst.

Onward and upward

hell, I seem to recall years and years ago a couple people getting banned for serial downvoting

Onward and upward

No, he's passive aggressively crapping on the recruit as yet another means of crapping on the coaches.

A real two-fer...

and is taking a chance in us.

This is telling and perhaps I'm reading too much between the lines. But for a coach that is a supposed QB whisperer, talented QBs should be wanting to come here in year six to grow and succeed, or at least have high interest in coming here to grow and succeed, not "taking a chance." FuCorn have developed none of their prospects and the two best ones left. Indeed, this recruit is taking a chance, and it shouldn't be that way if our coaches are able to actually coach them up.

Duke, GT, Vandy, Wake, you'd think the kid has to be pretty smart which we'll always take more of

VT '17

That Werther's Candy guy is a pretty good QB Coach. I'd call this a win for the Hokies.

JP

Wooooo!!!

1 down, lots more to go!

Played some DB, some WR, and QB. When it's all said and done, with his breakaway speed on film, he's gonna end up at WR for VT.

he's gonna end up at WR for VT.

Gee, I hope not. All our WRs transfer out

and that's different from QB's how?

LOL great point

It's settled DB it is.

"What are you going to do, stab me? - Quote from Man Stabbed

Okay, we have DC's reaction. Now I need a kneejerk reaction on why this man will lead us to the promise land. Just need to cover all the TKP bases.

Fire Whit.

Christian Darrisaw was an extremely low rated prospect and he's going to be a 1st round pick. Imagine what our staff can do with this guy

Disclaimer: just providing the requested reaction.

Edit: not to seem like i'm down talking the commit because there's basically no commitments I don't like

A two-sport athlete who has already shown some pretty good film. I don't know the level of competition for things like reads, but his actual arm talent (i.e. the ability to make throws) is ACC caliber.

I don't know shit about basketball bodies versus football bodies when it comes to college athletics, but I do know that Devin Wilson was listed 11 pounds heavier as a football player than when he played basketball. So if/when Farrell commits to football full time, his ability to add football weight will be crucial - but he is already an ACC talent who would need a year or two to learn the system. If he grows another inch or two, he could take off in an offense like ours.

Is that somewhere between optimistic, orange and maroon glasses, and/or knee jerk reaction-y enough for you? (If you can't tell, I like the recruit a lot and think there is a lot of room for potential. But, I would still probably try to sign one more QB in 2022 regardless.)

This guy gives me Kam Chancellor vibes, even plays DB

TKPhi Damn Proud
BSME 2009

The guy is a definite talent, and wants to be a Hokie, and accepted our offer. That's all I need to know right now. It sure as hell beats the news that some player or coach or staff member hit the transfer portal.

Dual sport athlete...getting Jeff King vibes on this one. You never know, could hit a growth spurt.

Get fully fucking dipped. Did someone say a 2 sport star?

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

My favorite thing about this picture was always how out of place he looks. He just did not have a basketball build in the slightest.

Is he 800% committed?

Bob: What would ya say ya do here?

Brad: I already told you! I iron out the minutiae so Justin doesn't have to. I have people skills dammit! What the hell is wrong with you people?

Did we see his battery percentage?

We put the K in Kwality

If it's anything over 20% he's trash and shouldn't come here.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

I see it more as if his battery percentage is over 20%, then he's not committed to football as he can find the time to charge his phone when not an emergency. That...and he clearly doesn't care about global warming.

We put the K in Kwality

I'll take him at CB

Though i see what you are saying there. His size is definitely more likeable at CB. I say lets go a different route here though. Develop him at QB. Why not? Its worked out before.

Hokie Love!

Plus he's 16? 17? Lots of potential for more size in the next few years.

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

This is kind of early in the process. Looks like a very good athlete and he could be used anywhere in an Athletic position such as DB. Don't put too much emphasis on QB position just yet - we might get other interest at QB and the room seems to be pretty fluid. Having said that, Welcome Home Devin Ferrell, hope you are awesome for us.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

I want AJ Swann as our QB recuirt

I hope we get both. Let them compete, and if Farrell is better elsewhere he can move positions, but I think from that film he is able to play QB in our system.

AJ Swann just announced he's committing on March 1st. Keep an eye on this hokie fans

We need multiple quarterbacks

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

Agreed. I see no reason why this won't be a two QB class, whether it's two HS QB's or one HS QB and a transfer. Imo it's preferable to have at least four scholarship QB's on the roster each season. The margins are thin as you don't need 6-7 QB's but 3 can get you in a precarious spot quickly with a couple injuries.

He looks impressive, especially hitting receivers closely covered.

There was one run in his Hudl where I'm cheering him on and I'm like "Oooooh! downfield block setting up!" and then he doesn't take the block and I'm like "Oh noes!" and then he just runs right by the defender like it was nothing. TD!

I spoke with Devin and his coach tonight. Expect an article to start your week.

Regardless of how you feel about Fuente or the program's direction, no one should be talking negative about the commit.

What's different about college football is there is no tanking to get better in the long run, we all have to support whoever is out there in a VT uniform. Hokies choose VT, not the other way around.

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

I'm not gonna celebrate any recruit until LOI is in house. Been burned too many times, and looking at his other offers list, we're in prime Big Dogged territory here...
