According to 247, Tyree Rodgers has entered the portal in what I'm sure will be one of many to leave this spring. Seems to be a lot of contributing factors (he left the team to focus on academics last year, potentially passed on the depth chart, lots of young safeties coming in etc.), but I wouldn't be surprised to see more with the scholarship situations across college football this year.

I had a feeling he would hop in the portal. Thankful for his contributions to the team and I hope he finds a good landing spot. This isn't necessarily great for safety depth, but I'm not sure where exactly he was in the pecking order with the addition of Tae Daley and Devin Taylor looking like he is sticking with safety.
Keonta Jenkins presumed starter at free safety is a wrinkle I did not see coming. I felt he was destined to the more SS/boundary safety role behind Tae Daley, who played that role primarily for Vanderbilt.
Good for Keonta if this plays out this way. Long term starter potential if he is claiming that role as a sophomore.
I was more surprised that he received some run at rover/SS this past year. His stature doesn't scream enforcer at all. But Diablo had the FS spot locked up last year.
He is definitely a tall/skinnier build type which I usually associate with FS more than SS on aesthetic, but when he played last year it was at the boundary safety, and a lot of the talk from practice and word of his skillset seemed more geared toward that role as well.
If he has the range to play free safety, more power to him. I want to see Keonta succeed at VT and if that's his best spot and he's the best man for it then I'm sold.
great news on Keonta tbh, I think he can be a difference maker. wish JR Walker had forced his way into the conversation though -- "dabbled at both" really really comes across as a nice way of saying "not really good enough at either"
Walker needs to start showing out. Way too much talent for him not to be in The starter convo
Get him over to offense sooner rather than later if he's not settling in at defense. Too much talent to leave on the sidelines, and we need help in the WR room.
I think I recall last year that Walker was working with the 2's in Conner's spot. The nickel/3rd safety/whip role. He may have been doing that for lack of other options there, but I'm almost certain that was the case.
He was absolutely horrendous versus UNC last year. One of the worst showings I have seen a player have for a VT debut.
*Walker- playing at safety
How do you really feel? Haha jk French. Appreciate the info as always.
I just don't understand the logic of entering the portal before spring practice is over. If you're being passed over in the depth chart that tells me you need ever rep you can get. I guess you want to prevent an injury, but say you do get hurt, at least you are still on scholarship and can hang around another year. I just don't see a lot of scholarships opening up for back-up players with so many super-seniors getting an extra year of playing time.
