Among the other storylines and notes, Landers Nolley may face off against his old team.

I'll be watching

These tournaments always make me nervous. The beginning of a season is always a little weird. A 2-0 showing is a big resume boost, but a 0-2 showing or even a 1-1, depending on who you play, can hurt your resume a lot.
Regardless, always good to play in these to get exposure and potentially quality wins. We might play against Landers Nolley too
Thanksgiving in New York! What are the chances the LOL football game is on at the same time as the finals tho?
I don't know anything, but I'd put the chances at less than 50%. This will tip off at 7:30 or later. VT-UVa football games don't usually command prime time coverage. It did last season through a combination of some unique factors like revenge game, VT bowl eligibility/streak, and UVa's 4-game win streak. It doesn't hold a lot of intrigue outside a slice of the ACC audience and I would think the conference and networks would take this scheduling into account.
Second NIT game is on Friday. UVA game is on Saturday this year.
We might be the best team in that field by a good distance....
I'm not as knowledgeable of basketball as football, but I would have assumed we would be perceived as the team most likely to be called a "bad" loss on a team's resume.
Not even remotely. We are a Tournament team returning arguably more scoring then we lost with the offensive threat finally of five on five rather than four on five when Bede was on the floor last year. Adding the 17.8 ppg that Storm Murphy put up and his 4 year average 3pt% above 40% will mean teams have to remain honest rather then cheat in to clog the middle which will give the guys inside more space to work.
My only real concern is the bench depth with Bamisile and Cone gone but that gives Alleyne and Radford more run which I am fine with. Still not sure where Maddox fits.
Not sure how Young will utilize the transfer from Clemson yet and we will miss the dynamic energy Coach Frazier brought behind the scenes. Young replaced him with a much better option than I expected but he will take time to integrate both with the players and staff.
i know it's cool to rip on bede's offense but let's wait and see how we look on the defensive end because it's a different caliber of player to guard on the perimeter for murphy. also a different level of ball handling ability is required; those are two things bede brought even if his shot was less than ideal
I don't think anyone's ripping on Bede's offense. It's just 18 ppg v 4 ppg. Terrific defender and ball handler Bede has been, we'll see if there's 14 points worth of difference there, all told.
I posted this when he transferred.
It's only a few stats, but 102 steals over his career vs 96 and counting for Bede, 3 blocks vs 30 and counting for Bede.*
Murphy's better on the offensive boards: 35-25 and defensive boards 270-253.
Offensively, there's almost no comparison. Murphy has been averaging ~85% for his career from the line and north of 40% from beyond the arc to Bede's 55.6% and 29.9% respectively
Assists+Steals/TO margin: Murphy 2.42:1, Bede 3.51:1
*this was posted before the Florida game.
Most of the general themes that you posted are probably true, but it's difficult to compare stats from ACC to Southern Conference
saying it's 4 on 5 with bede on the floor i don't think is a fair representation of his contributions, and seems to be a bit much. it's on mike young and co to minimize his offensive deficiencies while maximizing what he can/could do on offense
my overall point is that bede is probably best as a P5 back-up due to his offensive weaknesses, who was put in position of being a P5 starter (for a NCAA tournament team!) through no fault of his own. in my estimation he was our best ball handler and one of our top perimeter defenders, we don't know that his replacement is going to be of that level, but i certainly hope so
There was definitely more than 1 game where Bede kept us in it when it was close. He has shut down the other teams best offensive guy enough to always be a favorite Hokie. Now what I want is a 6th year where his play time slows down and his coaching defense to the other players increases and next year he is back as a graduate assistant to be a coach.
Memphis and Xavier will have most of their team back. VT may be the best team in the field but it wouldn't be by a large margin. I would think the unbiased observers would say Memphis, Tech, Iowa St and Xavier.
Nice, let's get sum
CMY has a way of starting the season with a bang. Lets Go!
I hope they're all ranked #2 when we play them.
#3?
Dammit...totally messed that up.
Oh well...we're better now. Let's start kicking #2's ass!!!
Who does #2 work for??!!
I'm disappointed that none of these tournament teams will be ranked #3. But I am happy we are unlikely to be ranked #16.
Watched Nolley play and Memphis overall several times.
Memphis will BATTLE with anyone they play to catch up. Penny is likely on his hot seat this year. Coming off of an NIT win, and a lucky shot by Tramon Mark from UH to lose the final game of the regular season, they're likely to beat the smack out of some teams.
Also, Memphis is a class team overall. Their coaches love the spirit of their opposing teams. Memphis travels pretty well, let's show them up in Brooklyn!
