"John will serve as a valuable asset for us as we seek to reach the lofty objectives set forth in the Reach for Excellence campaign," Babcock said. "John's long history of fostering relationships with alumni, donors and other key constituents to broaden the impact of Virginia Tech makes him uniquely qualified to serve in this newly-created role. For nearly 40 years, John has been very personally invested in Virginia Tech's spirit of Ut Prosim, and we look forward to his contributions in this latest role at Tech. John has positively impacted generations of Hokies and this is one more opportunity for him to make a lasting impact on the greater Virginia Tech community."

It's always exciting to see new hires in the athletic dept and John appears to have a lot of experiene networking and fundraising, but I can't help but think we need someone younger. Our main donor pool is getting old and they will need to be replaced by the younger generation. I very much hope John drives a lot of investment, but I'm a bit skeptical of the hire.
i hear ya on that, but i think a special assistant to whit with a ton of experience makes sense
Agreed. In some ways it makes a lot of sense, but I do think we missed a big opportunity. As someone who manages local political campaigns (not trying to cross the line), fundraising is a lot easier in the digital age. I hope we can capitalize on that in the future.
Lots of incredibly positive vibes about this hire. Excited for the future!
not trying to rain on the parade, but does anyone know how successful the Virginia Tech foundation has been?
because it's all well and good that he knows people at VT and Whit + MY like him, but that's not exactly something that pops off the page to make you say "wow, great hire". if anything, the previous relationships have me raising an eyebrow
edit: also, a man in his 60's stepping down from being CEO to a newly created position as special assistant? that doesn't look like an inspired long-term hire and plan. I hope it works out but the optics make me skeptical
