Personally, the commenting team of John Madden and Pat Summerall has yet to be surpassed.

Summerall and Madden were the best! A lot of what Madden said didn't make sense, but it was entertaining. RIP

I don't know what a Hokie is, but God is one of them!

Those early yellow drawings on replays...

I hated the Raiders and could not stand him as a coach because of that, but he was awesome as an announcer. A real loss. RIP.

I grew up listening to him and Pat Summerall calling the games on Fox. Can't count how many Cowboys games my grandfather and I watched listening to those two. It's a sad day for the football world.

What a great coach back in the glory days of the NFL, and what an awesome announcer in helping bring the NFL into contemporary times. By all accounts a good man and a straight shooter, an awesome sense of humor, and what a way with words. He helped make the game what it is today, in a great way. RIP

They guy made watching football more fun.

RIP, Coach Madden.

Why do they run a play with none yards?

RIP to a football legend. Thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

If the quarterback throws the ball in the end zone and the wide receiver catches it, it's a touchdown.

Boom!

Rest in Peace, and peace to his family.

Best color guy ever. He and Pat Summerall had a seemingly rare ability to let the game breathe and not drown it in words. But then when he did get going, it was the perfect blend of entertaining, informative, and nonsensical. Oh yeah, and he was a pretty good coach too. RIP and God bless to his family

I just saw a documentary on his career last week. Sorry, no idea who aired it. He's a great example of putting all 100% of your life force into what you love and everything around you blossoms.

...with spirits true and faithful...

The documentary- All Madden- was on Fox. I thought it was interesting (best word I can think of, but not entirely the right one) the that documentary/tribute aired and then he passed a couple of days later.
He had a very distinctive voice and a knack for helping the viewers to see the obvious. There will never be another like him.

The doc was originally scheduled to start streaming on multiple services (including ESPN+, Peacock, and tubi) on January 3, but Fox has allowed it to start streaming immediately.

It's also getting reaired on FS1 and FOX over the next couple of days.

RIP, Good Sir.

It was a real treat to watch his commentary growing up

Growing up a Colts fan, I wasn't a big fan of his teams or some of his dirty-ass players, but he was a very good coach who know how to mold a bunch of misfits and castoffs into a kick-ass team. To be honest, as a commentator, his shtick got a little old for me after his first few years in the booth, but I guess he had to make up for Summerall's dry, unemotional, and monotone persona. But he was a great man, coach, and commentator who helped make the NFL an awesome game. RIP Coach Madden

Like you all I certainly knew the man as a NFL commentator, but in video games Madden was one of the biggest icons in the gaming world. At some point I had: Madden '19, '16, '14 (but it was named Madden 25), '12, '10, '08, '03, '01, and '98. Many times when my roommates and I would play video games of any genre and we got stumped, someone would make the joke "dude just Ask Madden" and then we would have a laugh at what John would tell us to do against this bigass Final Fantasy boss or how he would use could use a telestrator for getting us through a GTA mission.

RIP a legend.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

This week/year ended with a loss of legends....
First Madden and now Betty White......
Sigh

Both took me by surprise as had not heard either were particularly ill.

Both were legends and will be missed. Madden helped form my love for football and I am a big Golden Girls closet fan (mostly due to wifey).

To quote the Brothers Osborne: "I'm Good For Some But I'm Not For Everyone"

I know. And Betty White was 18 days away from her 100th birthday.
