That's really tough, feel sorry for the kid, to see how two of our highest rated recent recruits, Hunter and Payoute, struggle on the field and have their careers conclude so closely together, has been a very unfortunate microcosm of our program's struggles
Fuente burned this program to the ground. And for those that argued "beamer left the cupboard bare".. cough cough TSL... lol - I said it at the time. If a bunch of NFL draft pics is bare, just wait and see.
Who said that? I have a clear memory during the honeymoon phase of people talking about Fuente having some talent to work with from Beamer. There was a period of time immediately after the honeymoon phase where I remember people pointing to certain Beamer holdovers being locker room issues (justifiably it sounds), but I don't think anyone said Beamer left the cupboard bare.
agree to disagree
I'm halfway through the Dwight Vick interview on Boundary Corner pod, and he made a point I haven't heard before, paraphrasing:
Beamer took kids with rough upbringings, and worked with them, and molded them, and knew how to talk to them, and help them. Guys like Trevon Hill, where every one else would take a pass. Fuente didn't know how to handle them.
This is a hell of an interview. Eye opening on some items, I'm not in the Twitter spaces, and I haven't talked to him directly, but I feel like I could have a chat with Dwight and he'd be real with me.
But to the point, yes TSL was quite vocal about repeating the company line, especially after the 6-7 season. They crave their access, to the point of bias.
That was a definitely a worthwhile listen. Dwight Vick has also been a great ambassador for VT over the years, and looks like he'll be back at it during the Pry Years.
Ah, not a member, so that's the gap. TSL I'm guessing has a very different user base than here?
It's like this, but with a bunch of people who can't function without a forum format that dates back to the early 2000's.
This hits different. We, meaning architects, always type in all caps so when I go over to Teams to chat with a colleague, 8/10 times my first message is in my online screaming voice.
well, at least they understand
AIM was still a thing when I was at my first job. I feel certain people felt like I was yelling at them at all times. I couldn't be bothered to turn off all caps when switching between drawings and messages.
Oh man, AIM. What a trip down memory lane. I remember trying to stay in touch with college friends when home on break using my dad's dial up service. Fun times.
Their content is geared towards fans, not necessarily the VT community.
Coleman wrote a huge piece on "recruiting is better than its ever been in program history". His logic was "P5 offers". He even went so far as to say "15 of the highest 20 ranked players of all time" were signed by Fuente.. huh? it's laughable now, it was laughable then.
I mean there were many years we'd get a recruit under Beamer and his next best offer be temple. So I understand where he is coming from, but yeah it's kind of meaningless when at VTs recruiting level you will always have to coach up players so unless we start pulling in 5* recruits coaching and fit into our schemes matter way more.
QB room was non existent, I think it was only Motley
RB room was an injured Shai Mckenzie which you couldn't count on him being back after his injury and McMillian, who had a decent freshman year, but was a big difference in talent from his predecessors.
WR/TE was not bare, and no one could argue that.
The oline had very few upper classmen and was probably seen as very raw at best.
On Defense you had some pieces but Stromen and Motu had rough sophomore seasons, both had quietly good junior season and fantastic senior seasons.
The Edmund Brothers hadn't really broken out.
Faycson was never the same after his injury his frosh year so while he did a great job, I could see some knocking him for not being a top 5 DB for VT like he should have been (yes he's #1 in passes defended)
A lot of players really showed up in 2016 that hadn't before, the cupboard wasn't bare, but I could see some one making that argument. It's why I am curious to see what Pry does. What if Dax and Tisdale click in this defense, what if Dorian takes a bug step forward, or Conner or Murray. What if a couple of those RBs really show up and play like we saw glimpses, what if Joe molds that line like he has so many times before?
We got a proven QB, we have some WRs that are raw but man that catch last year by Jones was fantastic.
We are thin so avoiding injuries is goal #1 but I could definitely see a better season than people think and then a drop off in a year or two as we are playing almost all freshman teams because the last couple years of recruiting has been rough.
Joe molds that line, couple things on D click in, one of the million RBs steps up behind a good aggressive line, then yeah, we could have a surprise season. If the oline doesn't come together, it is going to be a rough one.
Ah yes, the "Beamer left the cupboard so bare that we hung with Clemson in the ACCCG the first year" argument.
This sucks. He would have been an absolute stud if he could have stayed healthy, high school tape looked like something from Madden
Feel awful- he is a good kid. I feel bad that he had inferior coaching to the point they couldn't help him contribute last year. I hope he is sucessful in his next endeavor
Jayden Payoute and Marshawn Williams...why can't we have nice things from Virginia stay healthy and workout for us? I truly feel sorry for the kids who work so hard to play college ball just to be injured and watch their careers end. So much potential!
In light of this news, I now have to change my record prediction from 12-0 to 11-1.
I have been looking forward to what he was going to do on the field for what feels like 5 years. Feel bad for how things have gone for him. He looked like a game changer in the making in the few snaps we saw of him healthy.
Best of luck to Jaden, and hope the off field stuff is taken care of.
Well, this investment certainly didn't pay out. /s
In all seriousness though, hate this for Payoute as he seemed like a great guy who worked hard but just couldn't shake the injuries. Hate to see his career end like this, especially since he was a very highly touted prospect. Wish him the best moving forward and next man up. I feel like Blue will have an immense impact this coming season, and the door is open for any of the young guys to step up as well. Have a feeling we are also going to play some power football.
Unfortunate, and I hate it for him, but I'm glad he's able to get his education for free and move on. This is the least desirable part of "the numbers always work out".
Medical Disqualification means he can stay on scholarship but not count towards the 85?
yes
It frees up scholarship room for the portal, he gets his education. Might be the best of both worlds.
I would have loved to have seen him play, but keep your health as much as you can.
Yes and my guess he ends up as a student assistant in the recruiting department.
Appreciate him for being a hokie and a great ambassador for the program. With this unfortunate news, I hope we can pick up one (or two?) more experienced or talented WRs from the portal. Love some of the guys we have but with how raw that room is would love to get a little more experience in there to even it out and give our new QBs some reliable targets
Three surgeries on one ankle. That just sounds painful.
And likely only to get worse as he gets older. When you are young, you always feel like you will live forever or "fully recover." The truth is - old injuries often come back to haunt you as you age.
Best of luck, Mr. Payoute and may all the negatives I just referred to not be true for you.
That sounds Grant Hill..esque....Man I really was looking forward to finally having a OC that would use Payoute's speed.
