The season is finally upon us after a long off-season of coaching changes, conference realignments, and being teased with that Nebraska meltdown last week. I for one am really looking forward to starting this weekend by letting the hate flow through me watching the Backyard Brawl. Someone is going to make an ass of themselves (outside of Pat's usual routine) and it is going to be quality entertainment.

Thanks for the plug, max (or cheese, whichever one of you posted this)!
Well-reasoned and informed is for French and Brian and the other staff writers.
Pick 6 is about tapping into your inner FifthFuller or dcwilson, posting your hot takes, gut feelings, and completely random choices on the record then we see how poorly we did afterwards. It's like day trading but you only lose dignity.
It's awesome.

Sorry, I forgot my /s. I shouldn't give away my trade secrets, but I usually split my picks into thirds. 2 picks seem to come from actual football knowledge, 2 based on feelings (usually distain for a coach or a team's fans), and 2 based on memes or cool jerseys.
I think you and I have similar systems.

Backyard Brawl tonight should be entertaining
Great article on the rivalry that was posted today. There is some great quotes in there.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/34477004/why-pitt-west-virginia-backyard-brawl-college-football-rivalry-unlike-other
I'm very confident in Penn State -3.5 tonight. So confident in fact I also took alt line -6.5. Fight me.
Bold take
I think regardless of how this game ends, I was on the right side of this. The real story isn't Purdue good PSU bad or should've bet Purdue+3.5. The real story is that while Manny Diaz is a good DC, Brent Pry is a great DC and without him Penn State struggled and blew a big lead.
AAAAAHHHHHHHH I HATE PENN STATE BUT I LOVE THE TASTE OF SWEET SWEET MONEY FIGHT ME SOME MORE
The right side is the side that pays. There is no woulda shoulda coulda in gambling!
On my way home to VB. Getting in this evening, gonna catch what I can of pitt-wvu. GOING TO THE GAME TOMORROW WOOOOO
I hate cheering for Pitt but I can't cheer for WVU.
I'm more in the "Go ACC" bucket. I hate them both equally, but the ACC needs to show supremacy over the other conferences whenever possible
I am with you. I used to not care, now it is for survival.
I wish CFB had ties so both WV and Pitt lose.
This is the only correct answer on who to root for.
This is when you pull for the giant meteor.
Thunderstorm as regulation ends, lasting longer than four hours
My feelings about the Ohio State/Notre Dame match up.
If the stadium could also burn down afterwards that would be OK too.
EAT SHIT PITT!
Fuck Pat Narduzzi
It feels so good to be watching College GameDay. Eat Shit Pitt, fuck WVU.
Edit: Thanks for reminding me Herby. Go NM State Aggies.

I forgot how awful ESPN's 720p streaming is.
Damn, it's a shame that Pitt students have to go all the way from Oakland to The Stadium Formerly Known as Heinz Field instead of the Pitt Bowl. This is what Pitt games should look like.
Maybe it's because I haven't watched college football in 7 months or because Heinz is usually empty, but that Pitt crowd was lit tonight. As someone with family roots in Pittsburgh and who almost went to Pitt, that's how their games should be. That being said, eat shit.
Man fuck Pat Narduzzi!
i hate pitt but goddamn i want them to run it up to infinity here
So far I'm not sure if the Cuzins are decent or if sPitt is overrated....
Probably a little of both. But this looks more like a typical Pitt team. Grind it out on the ground. Not particularly explosive.
It sure does. I kind of like it tbh
Watching CMU vs Okie St in 4k is pretty nice
Hopefully they both burn each other's couches and throw bags of piss on each other. It'll be a win-win.
Pitts dbs kinda suck all game
Never understood the Pitt love during the pre-season. Last years team was much better.
yeah, there is no way some one should have broken that run
That kid that got the wvu TD has some serious legacy roots there. Gotta respect that.
And, damn, I need the ACC to win, so gotta root for fuckin Pat Narduzzi. Damn, I hate choices sometimes...
Hooker already killing it!
Many mixed feelings on HH balling out for that program ...but ya know, good for him
Honestly, I'm just wishing the kid the best. He came to play for us and we squandered that opportunity. I really think we could have kept him if we used him better, but our former coach had an affinity for Willis for some reason.
I'm a Tennessee fan for as long as he's there because I'm a fan of Hooker. Once he's gone it's back to hate.
Pitt looks like they have taken a significant step back offensively.
This game is getting real chippy real quick and I love it.
WVU quarterback throwing some very accurate balls. No success yet but good looking passes
Dang, there are a ton of Thursday night games...
Slopppppy football happening in Pittsburgh
Like that pick 6 that just put pitt up!
More people in the stadium than the will likely have in their other six home games this year combined lol.
Or, as Pittsburghers call it, "football"
Boy, good thing Cornelson isn't around anymore, Pitt's defense looks good against screens this year
As much as I dislike WVU, that kid Ford-Wheaton is fun to watch
Man, Pitt's CBs are not good. Constantly out of position and terrible tackling.
And a lot of blatant grabbing. Pat's CBs have always initiated a ton of contact. If you get a good WR on his corners who can play equally as physical you can usually win.
I'm not rooting for Pitt to win, per say, just for WVU to lose. You always pull for the cousins to lose. This goes beyond conference allegiances. The hate is real.
Women's soccer beat ODU 3-0 tonight. So that's good
Hendon Hooker looking like a Heisman candidate as the September weather remains warm and balmy in Knoxville.
Watching the PSU/Purdue game...looks like Devyn Ford's been over taken by a true freshman at RB
Which VA RB has actually panned out at Penn State? It's all highly sought after guys buried on the depth chart.
Treveyon Henderson though is the real deal.
That was a very non-chalant punt. Don't think those extra three steps were worth it for his net punt yards...
WVU looks good on both sides of the line.
They look okay, Pitt looks bad.
Pitt looks NOTHING like what they did last year.
Random question. Has the Goodyear blimp ever been to a game in Blacksburg?
Don't know about the Goodyear Blimp, but I know when Gameday was there for 2017 Clemson and the 2018 ND game, both Saturday night prime time football, they had some live aerial shots of the stadium on the broadcast. Not sure what they used for that.
I guess it has mostly moved to drones at this point.
I always heard it couldn't because the Blacksburg airport needs the airspace clear
lmao I just realized - the backyard brawl is a duel between two former USC QBs. Slovis beat out JT Daniels too right? I guess Graham Harrell was also the USC OC
JT Daniels can play. The biggest question of his ability has always been his availability.
WVU D-line scares the shit out of me.
Is this because Pitts OL is shit?
Tough to tell which way it is in week 1. Hoping it's a bad Oline for Pitt rather than a badass Dline for WVU
It mite be a combo of both (Eee Gahd)!
Also: Love ur fishing exploits around Marco Island. Keep them coming!
It may very well be. Pitt certainly looks to have a conditioning deficiency against this WVU D front. Those OLinemen look gassed. They looked fine to me in the first half, but have gone downhill quick here in the second.
And man, I haven't been fishing for more than an hour since May, maybe June. It's killing me. Guys are killing it and all I can do lately is hear about it.
Im sorry to hear that, make time.
I moved from Brevard County to SW VA 8 years ago. Left ALL my salt water fishing behind for the future of my family. Dont get me wrong, I'm fine with the change, but I big time miss my salt water fishing around Grant, FL.
Wet. That. Line.
I'll get to once things at work settle down. That condo collapse in Miami really rocked our world at work with all the legal changes and structural study/repair requirements. We're about through our stuff, but man it's been a long year.
That collapse is a huge deal. Glad ur gettin through that.
That happens. Work through it and get back to it.
Certainly is. Absolutely horrifying. My wife an I did an air tour of Miami in March and flew right over the site at 900 feet or so. Crazy how it didn't touch one of the buildings to either side of it
As someone on the responder side of the post incident reviews I'm disappointed that the state didn't go farther. I'm hoping that condo associations and builders are willing to fill the gap.
I'm probably in the minority of condo managers here, but they definitely didn't get as strict as they should have in certain areas. Some areas are a little unrealistic to me (like, how is my engineer supposed to tell me the remaining life of my pilings...?) But definitely could have gone further in alot of areas
Pitt continue to be classy as can be. WVU look decent though gotta admit their O and D line look solid
That Donaldson kid for WVU is scary good.
WVU looks like their going to outlast Pitt. They're turning up the pressure and looks like the Pitt o-line is done-zo.
This Pitt online does not look good at all. You can't be giving up a sack with only a three man rush.
So is WVU good or is Pitt bad? I dunno...
Yes?
Slovis is crumbling. He won't win this game.
PSU- Purdue is a fun game to watch. That freshman RB is GOOD
I was baffled by the off season hype for Pitt. They lost a Heisman finalist QB, the OC who developed him, and their Biletnikoff award winning WR. And their pre season ranking is only slightly lower? Why? I don't think they're a top 25 team this year.
Man, Pitt should have gone after that freshman CB immediately after that targeting call.
That Pitt touchdown just now was some of the worst effort/tackling ever by WVU.
Purdue up 24-21 on PSU now with 1:11 left in the 3rd.
>checks picks, sees choice of PSU covering 3.5<
Well this might suck.
Lots of time left, I'm not stressed yet
Oh noooooooooo. Fucking pick 6 right through the WR hands!
This Backyard Brawl is totally nuts.
Agreed. Backyard Brawl and Black Diamond Trophy need to happen every year. This is entertaining football.
Pitt's FG snapper needs to work on his aim... he's drifting further towards the back of the holder and it's getting dangerous.
PLAY THIS GAME EVERY YEAR PLEASE AND THANK YOU
Pat will explode tonight if this stands.
Gotta hand it to Pitt for pulling this one out the way their OLine looked for a while there.
Yeah I definitely think Pitt has come back down to Earth a bit this year. Back to their usual grind it out on the ground style. Slovis put up a 300 yd performance but they also ran the ball a lot tonight. Don't think they want to air it out that much, but WVU DL looked solid against the run.
Really great game, but some flaws on both teams. Pitt's DL looks tough but their secondary has some issues. Offense isn't the same this year but WVU's defense kind of collapsed late in this one. JT Daniels had a pretty good game but was running for his life behind that OL. Should be some interesting matchups when we play both of these teams.
Yeah I'm even more interested to see how we do in the chess game against both teams now.
This Backyard Brawl totally lived up to the hype. Not going for it on 4th and 6 inches cost WVU the game.
Holy crap, how great of a game was that?!
I love the chippiness
Great game in the Backyard Brawl.
Eat Shit Pitt.
So the referees decided the result of the backyard brawl. Figures...
Why is anyone running out kickoffs at this point? Just take the ball a the 25.
Come on Purdue let PSU see why paying a coach no one else wanted 7 million a year and 85 million guaranteed was maybe a mistake.
I'm glad I steered from the PSU line and game.
Purdue doing Purdue things.
It's a one score game in the 4th and PSU has the worst 4th quarter coach in college football!
Both these games have been great tonight. My goodness what a great way to open week 1
What is Purdue doing!!!
going backwards
I've noticed they change how they display timeout, I dont like it, it's way harder to see. Both WVU and PSU games had tough to see timeouts.
Does Purdue not have a running back on their roster?
This game if Purdue fails sits at the feet of whoever didn't run the ball for two series under 6 minutes.
Pretty sure the Purdue coaches went to the Mike London Time Cop Academy for clock management.
London is like:
Well, not a bad Thursday night of football, albeit a bit disappointing.
Pitt won which is good for the ACC, but I couldn't help but feel dirty rooting for them to win. The backyard brawl was a helluva game though. There were a couple of moments where Pitt looked like they were going to shoot themselves in the foot but WVU somehow managed to lose the game.
What a disappointing end for Purdue. Just a sheer lack of smart clock management and a desire to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Did anyone see Fuente prowling the sidelines?
Felt the same way. Whichever team would start to look good, I would decide they irked me more and start pulling for the other team. Ultimately, I just wanted the loss to be very painful for one of the fanbases and I was not disappointed.
Fuente bad at clock management? No no no Fuente was so good at clock management his offenses started playing keep-away at halftime lol.
Something, something expected outcomes.
For a very brief moment I felt okay with Pitt winning (because Fuck WVU) and then they interviewed that schmuck Narduzzi and that brief moment was shattered. I hate Pitt. I wish we could beat both of those teams this year. It would be cathartic after the Fuente years
I think there is a 1% chance we beat both. Would love for it to be higher, but have heard rumblings that ODU might be a fight to try and win.
What does this mean?
/s
yeah, I know. I wish we could beat them. I doubt very much that we will. I'm not even sure we'll beat one of them, let alone both.
I've been so hesitant to put any kind of numbers to this season because there are just so many unknowns. The only thing we DO know is that our depth and talent are suboptimal. With an undertalented team working in a new scheme with new coaches (who are rookies in their positions for many) there is a real recipe for a very poopy year.
Just looking at our schedule, there aren't any teams that really, really scare me (NC State being our best opponent on paper, for instance) but there are also no teams that I think VT will definitely beat. Maybe Wofford. But outside of that, I think every team on our schedule could beat us. A lot of those teams are also beatable; I just don't know if VT is the type of team that can beat them. I think there's going to be a lot of ugly football this year. We'll probably win a game or two that we really shouldn't. We'll probably let a game or two slip away when we have a chance to win it. Gun to my head prediction - 3-9 or 4-8. With O&M glasses on, I could probably make a case for 7-5 or 8-4. But that would take some incredible fortune and a much, much faster than anticipated growth spurt of our team development.
1st 3rd - I think most likely we go 2-2 but 1-3 isn't out of the question.
@ODU - This is a coinflip. They're more experienced and senior laden. And they're at home. And they're confident. We should win this but in the first game of a new coach, this could be ugly too.
BC - I think BC is going to win this
Wofford - VT should win
WVU - As much as I would LOVE to win back the BDT I don't see it happening this year
2nd 3rd - I think it'll be tough to get more than 1 win here. Good chance we lose all 4.
@UNC - This is one of those games we should absolutely lose on paper but for some weird reason I think we'll win because UNC is super soft
@PITT - I doubt we'll win this one
Miami - This is another one where, due to the rivalry, anything can happen. I would be shocked by nothing here. A blowout either way or a close on that comes down to the last possession.
@NC State - On paper, NC State is the best team on our schedule. And we're playing them on the road at night. I'll be at this game but I'd be surprised to win it.
Final 3rd - On paper, this is probably the softest stretch of our schedule. However, it's also late in the season when we might be without some key contributors so it's really hard to predict. This is where I think depth (or lack thereof) will haunt us. I think there's a reasonable chance we get at least 1 or 2 wins. Possibly more. If we get into this stretch at full strength and avoid injuries throughout this segment we could even go 4-0 here. I think that's a big if, though.
GT - This is a winnable game but it'll depend on the health of our team at this stage. Coinflip.
@DUKE - Duke might be the second worst team on our schedule. I'll be at this game and I expect to win.
@Liberty - I hate Liberty with a burning passion and I hope we destroy them. But they're a better team than we probbly want to admit and I could see them taking a W in the lesser Burg.
UVA - Until proven otherwise, UVA is and always will be little brother. We'll win this one. If it's the only game Pry wins it'll be this one. I'm sure of that.
With my O&M glasses on, we easily go 8-4.
Unfortunately I am with you on a lot of those predictions. I count the season as a win if the players try hard all year and get better over the course of the season showing learning, depth, and experience will matter for next year.
I saw on last nights broadcast before the Pitt/WVU game that 45% of QBs starting for FBS teams this weekend are transfers.
Alright, go Appy St! Pitt won and I can't bring myself to root for another ACC team this weekend.
App State looks good so far, nice passing game ...
Can't watch football on Amtrak because the wifi doesn't cover streaming and we're moving too fast to get a good signal but still like less than half the speed of trains in the rest of the developed world. Why does the US transportation system suck so much?
Because the US is a huge f-ing country that is really spread out and was largely built around the automobile industry which has a massive lobbying interest in keeping folks dependent on personal vehicles. The oil industry has the same interest.
Yeah but then people want high speed rail but also everyone wants a stop in their town. Which defeats the purpose of high-speed rail. The sooner people think of high-speed rail not necessarily as a replacement for autos but for regional airports, the better.
Both points are accurate. Many east coasters(and most from Europe where high speed trains are common) don't realize the vast distances in the country. For perspective, the NATION of Germany is only slightly larger size in square miles as the STATE of New Mexico!(138,000 vs 119,000). Another interesting comparison is the distance the Allied armies traveled from Normandy to Berlin was about 750 miles-only 50 miles more than driving from DC to Chicago and the same distance as driving from El Paso to Houston-all within one state.
And the NIMBY attitude of many if not most folks makes it difficult to route and acquire the rights of way to build them.
Definitely a true statement.. As a kid I was traveling from Richmond too outside St. Louis to visit with family friends for the summer. Driving would have taken 12 hours fairly straight shot on I-64(not an option for my then 11 year old self lol); , the train would have taken 38 hours(3 hours to DC then 3.5 hour layover; transfer to DC-Chicago line- 17.75 hours followed by 8.5 hour layover then Chicago to St. Louis -5.25 hours). So many stops along the way.
Or you could do what I did-1.15 hour flight RIC to ATL, 3 hour layover there, 1.15 hour flight to STL.
Also the rail market in most of Europe is 75% passenger trains where as in the US its the opposite almost 95% freight trains.
Sunbelt > acc coatal....yikes
Yep, UVA is looking rough too. At least the entire coastal is hot garbage this year.
Edit: NVM Armstrong is still pretty good
UNC's defense is as bad as our offense.
Their offense looks MUCH better though.... Bad defense still has to be taken advantage of.
Exponentially better lol
Drake Maye appears to be the real deal. Not great for us.
I was very worried about this being a reality, and two weeks in it's certainly looking to be the case.
As I watch this South Dakota St - Iowa game, all I can think is....I wish we were as good as the Jackrabbits
App is keeping it interesting.
Edit: damn I need to stop commenting.
Iowa's offense is terrible. I mean just painful to watch
Rutgers just went up on BC. That one is surprising me.
Rutgers is lowkey gonna be the best 4-6 win team in the country. Major pita to play for the Big 10, they arent gonna be total pushovers with a schiano defense completely installed
and game over, Rutgers wins
Which team will get their first win next weekend in Blacksburg...
Hope it is us. I said back in the summer that I would much rather play BC early in the season rather that late. They are going to have serious o-line issues to start.
Pirates and Wolfpack getting interesting 👀 tbh burn the ACC down lol we all are varying levels of trash
Edit nvm missed the xp wow
UNC/APP and NCSU/ECU both tied late in the 4th, ACC is the laughing stock again
Dang college kickers ... NC State ekes out a win
oh lol I saw the TD and assumed theyd make the FG, I was wrong
damn App state choked that away
Basically every other ACC team sucked just as bad as we did. Just eeked it out bc the lesser teams couldn't close. We choked it away in the end and ODU took advantage of our miscues
Holy shit what a miss by App State.
I remember when they came into Lane and got beat 66-0 (or something close to that). Post game, they said we weren't that good.
ACC Coastal is really shit this year. Only team I see having a decent record is Pitt (mainly because they actually beat a P5 team this week), UNC got lucky, and UVA faced Richmond, then us.
Carolina aint out of the woods yet homie lol
Through 2 games, it looks like UNC gives up a ton of points. Luckily for them, they can score a ton of points.
UNC's defense is a sin against the entire sport. How they managed to get worse from last year, I have no idea.
From his dying days at Texas, Mack Brown seems allergic to competent defense
VT the team with no luck to survive against the "lower level" in state school.
Lol app state scored more points in 1 quarter than we'll probably score in the first 3 games combined
Yikes Oregon
Cincinnati-Arkansas is a good game. Bearcats are shooting themselves in the foot, though.
Watching ND/anOSU, Do QB draws ever work? oh wait 4th and Logan in Miami 2011 lol. Chris Tyree's from VA right?
So JMU is rolling against MTSU. Not sure how much worse MTSU is than ODU but I'm not sure we'd be dominating like the Dukes are atm.
Watching the tos / ng game. After watching our game last night the speed difference is laughable!
Think Ohio State's best is better than what they are showing tonight, but we might have Bama-Georgia 2.0 this year. Georgia looks to be operating at Bama levels of replacing starters, not that I think their defense will be THAT good again. Bryce Young scans the field and picks his spots like an NFL QB.
Maybe so. Putting on my Dawg jersey was cathartic after last night. Kirby not afraid to say he wasn't satisfied with things even after crushing the Ducks, and his players will strive to do even better next week. I hope we can get closer to that approach.
Billy Napier got it done against #7 Utah. Give him a few years and Florida may be a force again.
And then he hit em with a "scared money don't make money" post game
Tayvion Robinson had 6 catches for 136 yards in his debut with Kentucky
sigh
Meanwhile Jaden Blue (brought in to replace him) had 1 catch for -3 yards. So much for getting the ball to playmakers.
I was telling my dad that Georgia - the defending national champs - saw that #3 preseason ranking and said

Beat the fucking brakes off Oregon. 15(!) draft picks last season and that's what they put up...unbelievable. I remember 15-20yrs ago the athlon/sporting news of the world used to say "Tech doesn't rebuild, they reload" but this is a totally different stratosphere.
God dammit I hate that Florida won so much. The SEC is undefeated, makes me want to puke. The head announcer straight up cheered and said "Yes!" when Florida got the pick.
Just flipped over from Kyrgios Medvedev and FSU is up 17-3 on LSU in the 3rd. LSU had a guy ejected for targeting on the FSU TD pass.
This is my kind of schaudenfreude- screw Brian Kelly.
As bitter put it on twitter, it was basically double targeting. That is textbook illustration of the exact kind of hit that the targeting rule was written to eliminate
That hit was about as intentional as it gets.
LOLSU scores with 0:00 on the clock... only to lose on a blocked PAT.
Beautiful.
The ending to the FSU-LSU game was nuts! 😱
The ending to FSU-LSU was absolutely bonkers. LSU muffs a fair catch with 2:30 to go down one score, and FSU recovers and moves to the 1. FSU fumbles, LSU drives 99 yards for a TD with 0:01 left, then has the extra point blocked. Insanity.
FSU came to play, the ACC is not done.
Need to win these big noncon matchups much more often. As dirty as it is I'll be rooting hard for Miami over A&M week 3
Karma for Kelly Killing Kids
As expected, a opening week Sunday night game, called by Tessitore, things are gonna get crazy.
It was a stupid call by FSU to pitch the ball at the goal line when they could have iced the game.
After everything was said and done, that final replay was just a waste of time and didn't accomplish anything. Whether he landed in or out of bounds, it was a first down so the clock would have paused for a reset. And FSU called a timeout anyway.
Wild, wild ending to that game. I still don't think I know much about either team. LSU almost filled the entire "enormous blunder" bingo board.
Only a few mins into this Clemson-GT game but GT looks like a totally different team from last year. They're playing how I hoped we would have looked against a shit ODU team, very physical.
Yeeeeah some one actually lit a fire under Geoff collins this season, that D line is scary good
Is GT decent now or is Clemson that bad?
KJ Henry is having a good game though
Took Clemson a bit to get warmed up there but they eventually pulled away to make it look normal.
I'm hoping GT just got up for that game b/c it's in the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, prime time game, against Clemson, first game of the season....etc.
And I hope we vastly improve over the season or it's going to be a LOOOOOONG season.
came across this and hadnt seen it discussed anywhere -- former vt commit and true freshman alex orji got into
michigan's blowout vs colorado state and scored a td
