First indoor track meet of the season starts today and runs through tomorrow with the Virginia Tech Invitational in Rector.
We have some new faces on the women's side in the sprints so Layla Anderson has some company now. I think this is important because I felt the women's team last year was too heavily focused on the middle distance and they didn't have enough balance to the team.
Also making his college debut is Judson Lincoln IV in the 300m. I'm excited to see how he does this season after winning six national titles in high school.
The start lists are interesting in that there are no currently posted entries in events that were a strength last year such as the women's 800m and Distance Medley Relay. In fact, the only running event that VT is entering on Saturday is the men's 4x400m relay. There is another invite at VT next weekend so I'll be curious to see how the start lists differ from this week to next.

Comments
Good first day for the Hokies.
Some highlights:
-Lindsey Butler returns to the track, but only ran the 3000m where she took 2nd with a time of 9:27.05.
-Star Price and Ava Hassebrock went 1, 2 in the 1000m as did Viktor Idhammar and Declan Rymer (Rymer competed unattached according to scoring) in the men's 1000m.
-Layla Anderson had a day in the 60m hurdles where she won the prelims with a personal best of 8.30 and then won the final with a new PB of 8.28. Transfer from Ohio State, Cierra Pyles had a good prelims taking 2nd but had a DNF in the final.
-Sean Murphy set a PB in the men's 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.33 in his tune-up meets with the multi events begin.
-Cole Beck did Cole Beck things in the 60 m winning both the prelims and the finals with the same time of 6.66. Central Connecticut St transfer, Ali Diaby took 3rd in the prelims with a PB of 6.761 and then lowered it to 6.71 to take 2nd in the finals. Kahleje Tillmon finished 4th in the final with a time of 6.763.
-Nicole Re and Maxana Grubb both set PB times in the one mile to finish 7th and 10th respectively.
-Layla Anderson continued to have a day in the 300m taking 2nd with a PB of 38.74.
-Kennedy Harrison won the 300m with a PB time of 33.05. Judson Lincoln IV took 2nd in his college debut and Ali Diaby finished 3rd to complete the sweep of the top 3.
-Cierra Pyles finished 2nd in the women's triple jump and Chauncey Chambers won the men's event.
-VT had a good showing in the unseeded pole vault with Erin Kelleher setting a PB of 13'-1.5" to win the women's event and Sean Murphy took 2nd in the men's event at 15'-9". The seeded event will be tomorrow.
-Rebecca Mammel and Sara Killinen picked up where they left off last year to go 1,2 in the weight throw.
Several days slow with this but some day 2 highlights.
1. Men's 4x400 - VT A won without Cole Beck who was with the VT B grouping. The VT A was a foursome of Diaby, Harrison, Green and Lincoln IV while VT B was James, Beck, Murphy and Spotswood. VT B had a DNF so I'm guessing a bad exchange between the two multi athletes running 3rd and 4th who don't typically deal with a baton.
2. Pole Vault Seeded - Julia Fixsen had a good showing and was named ACC field performer of the week with a vault of 14'-7.25".
3. Tyson Jones took 2nd in the shot put.
4. Essence Henderson and Katie Seyfang went 1/2 in the shot put.
5. Caleb Stephens took 3rd in the long jump.
Hokies are back in Rector on Friday.
Thanks as always for your track posts, VTMemory. I'm really looking forward to seeing what VT does this year. I'm particularly excited about Judson Lincoln IV, Kennedy Harrison and Kahleje Tillmon in the sprints, as well as Cole Beck as always. And it sounds like Ali Diaby is going to be valuable addition as well. Should be able to put together some great 4x400s and 4x100s in 2023 with those guys.
It's always a little painful to see him in a Florida uniform, but Jacory Patterson continues to be awesome.
TRP Video on JP
Couple of performances of note from last week's Hokie Invitational in Rector.
1. Declan Rymer set a PR to finish 5th in the mile with a time of 4:01.83.
2. Layla Anderson appears to be feeling it in the 60m hurdles this year. Won her heat in the prelims and then finished 3rd with a new PR of 8.26 seconds. Cierra Pyles advanced out of her heat and finished 5th in the finals.
3. Cole Beck, Torrence Walker and Ali Diaby all won their heats in the 60m. Cole Beck won the final with a time of 6.64 and Ali Diaby set a new PB in 3rd with 6.66. Torrence Walker finished 5th.
4. Lindsey Butler won the 1000m with a new PB of 2:42.32.
5. Khalil Bedoui took 2nd in the weight throw.
6. Journey Gurley took 2nd in the pole vault with a new PB of 14'-2.5".
7. Freshman Barbora Steifova took 2nd in the weight throw.
8. Welcome to the college 400m Judson Lincoln IV who took the win in 46.5 seconds. Kennedy Harrison was in the same heat and took 2nd with a new PB of 46.74. Ali Diaby took 3rd with a PB time of 47.34. Looks to me like VT is going to have a really strong 4x400 relay.
9. Layla Anderson set a new PB in the 200m to take 2nd in 23.85 seconds.
10. The 4x400 relay of Beck, Green, Spotswood, and James took 3rd.
11. Cierra Pyles won the triple jump.
12. Katrin Brzyskowska took 2nd in the shot put.
13. Aidan Clark, Elijah Bell, and Sean Murphy to 2,3, and 4 in the high jump.
14. Chauncey Chambers won the triple jump.
15. Jacob Rice took 3rd in the pole vault.
I would say that Judson Lincoln is going to be a stud, but it looks like he basically showed up on campus already in full stud mode.
His 46.50 is currently 11th best in the NCAA men's 400m this year, and he's the only freshman in the top 20. Kennedy Harrison isn't too far behind with the 15th fastest time in the country.
NCAA top men's 400m times
Harrison (16th), Lincoln (19th) and Diaby (21st) are all also among the NCAA leaders in the 300m dash, so definitely looking forward to seeing what the Hokies can do in the 4x400 this year!
The Lenny Lyles Invitational is going on today and tomorrow in Louisville. The sprint, field and multi events are well attended by Hokies. Based on the start list, looks like the distance folks have the weekend off.
Women
1. Layla Anderson - busy woman with the 60m, 60m hurdles and the 200m
2. Cierra Pyles - also a busy woman with the 60m hurdles, long jump (1st time this year), and triple jump.
3. Pole Vault - Emily Connor, Erin Kelleher, and Michal Tocker in the open event. Julia Fixsen, Journey Gurley, Hayley Horvath, and Kenna Stimmel in the seeded event.
4. Shot Put - Katrin Brzyszkowska, Essence Henderson, and Katie Seyfang
5. Weight Throw - Sara Killinen, Rebecca Mammel, and Barbora Steifova
Men
1. 60m - Cole Beck, Chad Blaker, and Ali Diaby
2. 200m - Cole Beck, Chad Blaker, Ali Diaby, and Amir Green
3. 400m - Kennedy Harrison, Maximus James, and Judson Lincoln IV. VT does have a 4x400 team on the entry list, but I can't find who the four are. My guess would be the three in the open 400 plus Beck but TBD.
4. High Jump - Elijah Bell and Aidan Clark
5. Long Jump - Caleb Stephens
6. Pole Vault - Harrison Rice and Jacob Rice in the seeded event with Joey Badalamenti in the open event
7. Shot Put - Tyson Jones
8. Triple Jump - Chauncey Chambers and Caleb Stephens
9. Weight Throw - Khalil Bedoui
10. Heptathlon - Clay Eckert, Sean Murphy, and Jacob Spotswood
4x400 scheduled to be Harrison, Diaby, Beck and Lincoln.
And thank you for your posts about VT T&F!
Day 1 Highlights
1. Layla Anderson had a great day. She finished 6th in 60m prelims and took 4th in the final. She also won her heat in the 60m hurdle prelims and took 2nd in the final.
2. Surprising result in the 60m for the men. Cole Beck finished 10th in the prelims and did not advance. Ali Diaby ran a 6.713 to win his heat in the prelims and good enough for 2nd overall. He did not start the final though so hopefully he didn't suffer an injury.
3. Sean Murphy is currently in 4th in the heptathlon. Jacob Spotswood didn't start so I'm wondering if he is still not 100% after his injury in outdoor last year even though he participated in a few individual events in the two home meets.
4. Women's Weight Throw - Mammel, Killinen, and Steifova took 1,2 and 3 among college athletes and 2,3, and 5 overall. Well done ladies! VT really does have a remarkable ability to recruit and train excellent throwers.
5. Seeded Pole Vault - Kenna Stimmel was the top college athlete and 2nd to VT alum and National Champ Rachel Baxter. Julia Fixsen was 5th overall and 3rd college participant.
6. Men's Long Jump - Caleb Stephens took 2nd.
Day 2 Highlights as of 230 PM
1. Judson Lincoln IV takes the win in the 400m in 46.79 with Kennedy Harrison taking 2nd in 47.15, both going under the previous facility record! Now to see what they do in the 4x400.
2. Women's Shot Put - Freshman Katrin Brzyszkowska putting senior Essence Henderson on notice to take the win with a throw of 55'-2.75" to Henderson's 2nd place throw of 54'-0". Both ladies beat the previous facility record. Katie Seyfang finished 8th.
3. Cierra Pyles takes 2nd in the triple jump at 42'-4" and both she and winner Riley Ammenhauser of Michigan beat the previous facility record.
Thats a wrap from Louisville.
-Cole Beck took 2nd in the 200m. Diaby had another DNS so I'm thinking he may be nursing an injury.
-Layla Anderson won her heat in the 200m to finish 5th overall.
-Aidan Clark took 2nd in the high jump.
-Harrison Rice took 4th in the seeded pole vault.
-Tyson Jones took 3rd in the shot put.
-Chauncey Chambers won the triple jump and Caleb Stephens finished 4th
-4x400 set a new facility record to win the event in 3:09.89 to close out the day. Assuming Diaby did not run so I'm not sure who the alternate was. Live timing only showed the original entry group and VT T&F twitter has not commented on the win.
Hokies will be back in action next weekend with some folks traveling to the Camel City invitational in Winston-Salem while others stay home for the Doc Hale Virginia Tech meet.
Based on the write up in hokiesports, diaby did run the 4x400 so whatever happened in the 60m must not have been too serious.
I thought the 4x400 team had a chance to take down the indoor school record of 3:07.64 yesterday. Obviously they didn't, but I still think that's a realistic goal this season.
I do too. Im excited to see what they do.
Doc Hale Invitational Recap - generally speaking, the folks that went to Louisville had this weekend off so some other folks got their opportunity in the Doc Hale Invitational in Rector.
1. Grace Boone took 2nd in the women's 800m in 2:09.96. Shoutout to Nicole Re who clocked a new PB of 2:15.69 to finish 10th.

The next two weekends are important final tune-ups before ACC championships in Louisville the 23rd-25th.
Kenna Stimmel is tied for 21st in the world right now. Rachel Baxter is tied for 8th best in the world! Go Hokie Vaulters!!!
Top Women's Pole Vaulters 2023
#2 on the list, Bridget Williams, is a volunteer coach for the Hokies. VT has quietly built quite the pole vault program.
Coach Bob Phillips the goat. This isn't a new found success either! He's been dominating the ACC in vaulting forever.
Busy weekend for the Hokies with athletes spread across three different meets.

3:45 - Men's 4x400m in Heat 4

3:00 - Women's Weight Throw Open - Barboara Steijfova in Flight 2

David Hemery Invitational in Boston. This one is only broadcast on Flo Track with a subscription. Live timing can be found here but the functionality is really poor compared to other live timing services. I also cannot find heat sheets and it appears that event results aren't compiled in a pdf until the meet is over to results from this one will be delayed.
Hokies will be competing in the women's 1 mile (Butler, Ballowe, Boone, Kappeler), Women's 3000m (Hassebrock), Women's 800m (Price), Women's 1000m (Re and Price), Men's Mile (Lopez Segura, Chevalier, Idhammar, Ludewick, Mills, Nagel, Reeburgh, Rymer), Men's 3000m (Lopez Segura and Jones), Men's 800m (Nagel and Plant), Men's 1000m (Plant) and Men's 5000m (Fleming).
I'll post up some results once the events are done for the day, but I am jealous of the difference in video coverage between secn+ and accnx. Watching the Music City Challenge before the wrestling match starts and there is an announcer and skycam. Watched a little bit of the Tiger Paw earlier and the camera was pointed at the windows so that the auto tint blacked out the athlete as they go by which meant you could see about 15m of the 60m.
There are some big names at the Tiger Paw Invitational. Matthew Boling (200m) and Elijah Godwin (400m) from Georgia. Favour Ashe from Auburn. And former World Champion Trayvon Bromell in the 60m.
Looks like Beck qualified for the 60m final (where Bromell ran a world-leading 6.42!) but didn't run in the final.
All right time for a weekend recap.
Tiger Paw Invitational
1. Women's 60m Hurdles - Layla Anderson just kept setting hurdles PRs going 8.23 to win her prelim heat, 8.15 to take third in the semi and qualify for the final on time and 8.13 to take 4th in the final. Cierra Pyles took 2nd in her prelim heat and finished 5th in the semis.
2. Men's 60m - Ali Diaby won his prelim heat and went 3rd in the semi heat, but did not have a good enough time to get into the final. Cole Beck won his prelim heat and went 2nd in the semi to qualify for the final but did not start the final as was pointed out above.
3. Men's 400m - Judson Lincoln IV had the top Hokie time with 45.97 to take 2nd in his heat and finish 6th overall. His time is good for top in the ACC so far this year and fastest freshman in the country. Kennedy Harrison took 2nd in his heat at 46.29 to take 10th overall. Maximus James won his heat in 48.59 and Amir Green finished 3rd in his heat in 49.68.
4. Women's Long Jump - Cierra Pyles set a new PR with 19'-7.5" which puts her into the top 10 in the ACC this year.
5. Women's 200m - Layla Anderson won her heat and set a new PR of 23.81.
6. Women's Triple Jump - Cierra Pyles and Victoria Gorlova are now 2nd and 3rd in the ACC. Pyles set a new PR of 43'-1.75" to finish 5th and Gorlova's mark of 42'-10.75" was good for 6th.
7. Men's 200m - This was a fast event. Kennedy Harrison won his heat in 20.89 to finish 13th overall, JLIV won his heat in 20.92 to take 14th, Torrence Walker won his heat in 21.01 with Ali Diaby right behind him in a PR time of 21.04. Cole Beck was 2nd in his heat in 21.09.
8. Men's High Jump - Aidan Clark took 4th.
9. Men's Triple Jump - Chauncey Chambers took 4th.
10. Men's 4x400 Relay - There is that school record we were waiting for. Diaby, Harrison, Beck and JLIV set a new school record in 3:05.49 to finish 4th in their heat and 8th overall. A lot of fast teams.
Music City Challenge
1. Women's Weight Throw Open - Barbora Steijfova finished 6th.
2. Women's Weight Throw Invite - Rebecca Mammel finished 7th and Sara Killinen finished 8th.
3. Women's Shot Put Open - Katie Seyfang finished 3rd.

3. Women's 3000m - Ava Hassebrock won her heat in 9:12.72 to finish 30th overall.
4. Women's 1000m - Both Star Price and Nicole Re won their heats to finish in 9th and 25th respectively.
5. Men's 800m - Nicolas Plant set a new PR of 1:50.04 to take 23rd.
6. Men's 5000m - Alec Fleming set a new PR of 14:09.91.
This coming Friday and Saturday will have Hokies participating in the Virginia Tech Challenge in Rector and the JDL DMR Invitational as the last events prior to the ACC Championships in Louisville 2/23-2/25.
Congrats to the 4x400 team for getting that school record! And they didn't just squeak into the record books, they beat the old record by more than 2 seconds.
Cole Beck looks like he has a chance of setting the 60m school record this season as well. He ran 6.62 on Friday, and the record is 6.57. I know there's not a lot of meets left, but he's definitely in striking distance.
Also, how amazing is Judson Lincoln IV? Running under 46 seconds in the indoor 400m as a freshman? Ridiculous. Jacory Patterson's school record of 45.14 is pretty sick (and also incidentally is the ACC-record), but you have to like Lincoln's chances of breaking that sometime over the next 4 years.
To add to all the other Hokie sports going on today, Track and Field is hosting the Virginia Tech Challenge in Rector as well as sending some folks to the JDL DMR Invite in Winston-Salem.
The VT Challenge appears to be a pretty small meet with some events only having a handful of participants. The Hokies will be getting DMR practice for the first time this year at both events which is needed practice with the baton prior to the ACC championships next week.
At the JDL DMR, the women are represented by Hassebrock, Price, Ballowe and Butler while the men sent two teams (A-Rymer, Nagel, Chevalier, Jones and B-Idhammar, Harrison, Ludewick, Lopez Segura).
Rebecca Mammel ladies and gentlemen!
That's awesome!
I don't know how they do that. The strength, the balance, the timing to do that without killing somebody is beyond me.
Yeah thats not a level of coordination I posses though I've always thought it might be fun to try. Well with a much lighter weight.
In looking at the full results, it should be noted that it was on her last throw and she won the event by almost 20'.
ACC record! That's amazing!!
Looks like she knew she had a special effort as soon as it landed.
JDL DMR Wrap-up
1. The all Hokies men's 1000m, had Nagel take the win in 2:35.59 with Jones in 2nd and Chevalier in 3rd. All three turned around and ran the DMR Elite race about 15 minutes later.
2. The all Hokies men's DMR Elite (1200m, 400m, 800m, 1600m) had two VT teams with the foursome of Idhammar, Harrison, Ludewick and Lopez Segura taking the win in 9:38.34. Second place was the foursome of Rymer, Nagel, Chevalier, and Jones.
3. There were five teams in the women's DMR Elite race and the Hokies finished 3rd behind NC St and UVA in 11:04.98 with the foursome of Hassebrock, Price, Ballowe, and Butler.
VT Challenge Day 1
1. Alec Fleming won his section and finished 7th overall with a season's best of 4:14.33 in the men's 1 mile.
2. Nicholas Plant won the men's 600m in 1:19.37.
3. Chad Blaker took 3rd and set a PB of 6.95 in the men's 60m.
4. Grace Boone won the women's 600m in 1:31.99 and set a PB.
5. Sydney Beverly was 3rd in her heat in the 60m hurdles which was good enough to qualify on time for the finals. She then finished 3rd in the finals with a PB time of 8.87.
6. Maxana Grubb finished 3rd with a season's best time of 2:15.56.
7. Grace Patten won her section and finished 4th overall in the women's 400m in 59.2.
8. The multi athletes made a good showing in the 60m hurdles with Sean Murphy winning in a PB time of 8.24 with Jacob Spotswood finishing 2nd.
9. Amir Green set a new PB to win the men's 400m in 48.37. Maximus James finished 2nd in his heat and 4th overall in 48.67.
10. Hokies went 1,2,3 in the men's long jump. Caleb Stephens won with a jump of 23'-8.75", Varun Narayan was 2nd with a PB of 23'-8.75", but he had three fouls. Elijah Bell was 3rd with 23'-4.5".
11. Khalil Bedoui won the men's weight throw with a season's best 67'-10.75".
12. Harrison Rice, Jacob Rice went 2 and 3 in the men's pole vault with Jacob Spotswood finishing 5th.
13. Julia Fixsen won the women's pole vault with Kenna Stimmel right behind her in 2nd.
I haven't done a detailed breakdown, but looking at the list of top 2023 performances in the ACC this year, it looks like both the men's and women's teams have a solid chance to take conference titles this weekend.
ACC Indoor Performance List
With the ACC men's and women's track and field championships set to start tomorrow at Louisville, here's a breakdown of how VT athletes have stacked up this season against the rest of the conference. Keep in mind, this is a season-ranking for each event, but I don't know if all the athletes listed here are competing in that event in this meet. Still, it's probably a good barometer of how competitive the Hokies should be this weekend.

Funny thing about the 200m is that the two guys with the fastest times (Harrison and JLIV) will not be running the 200m this weekend. However, this is the event for the men to stack points if all three can make the finals which they should based on times run this season.
A little late afternoon continuing ed means time to do a brief preview/update for the ACC Championships. The men are the favorite to three-peat as champions. The women are going to have to have to nail the throws, jumps, pole vault and middle distance to have a shot at it.
The first half of the multi events started this morning and the women's weight throw is ongoing. TV coverage starts at 4 PM and goes until 8 this evening on ACCNX.

Triple Jump - Blanco Molualisi and Chauncey Chambers
After the first day of hepathlon events, Sean Murphy is sitting in 3rd after PBs in the 60m and the long jump. Jacob Spotswood is in 7th in his first heptathlon of the season. Clay Eckert is in 9th but having a very nice day with PBs in the 60m, shot put and high jump.
Weight throw was huge for the women's score. Rebecca Mammel did her thing to win and set meet and facility records with a throw of 76'-5", Sara Killinen set a PB of 74'-4.25" to finish 2nd and Barbora Stejfova set a PB of 66'-7" to finish 4th for a total of 23 team points to push the Hokies into 1st place currently.
Layla Anderson goes 24.15 in the 200m to finish 2nd in her heat, but 15th overall so she will not advance to the final.
Well the men's 200m did not go as planned. Cole Beck finished 3rd on time so he qualified but Torrence Walker finished 9th and Ali Diaby finished 11th and did not qualify. Diaby got out of sorts coming out of the turn and ended up in the next lane over for a few steps but did not get disqualified. I think those couple of steps were enough to get out of rhythm and affect his time.
The pole vault ladies did what they needed to do. Kenna Stimmel takes the win, Julia Fixsen took 2nd, and Hayley Horvath finished 6th for another 21 team points.
Elijah Bell sets a new PB in the high jump of 6'-11.5" to take 3rd and Aidan Clark finishes 4th to get the Hokies on the board with 11 points.
Rough day in the 5000m for Alec Fleming who finished 38th overall with a time of 14:59.75.
Congrats to Rebecca Mammel and Kenna Stimmel for leading the charge in the weight throw and pole vault. Hokies women crushed it today!
Women's DMR finished 5th in 11.02.93 which was good for a season's best. Flash results doesn't tell you the individual relay runners or at least I can't find it, but I believe the foursome was Hannah Ballowe (1200m), Barbora Malikova (400m and the first event she has done all indoor season), Grace Boone? (800m) and Lindsey Butler (1600m). If I am wrong, I'll fix it when VT T&F posts an update somewhere or someone here corrects me.
Drama in the men's DMR. I watched it live and UVA won with VT finishing 2nd. The UVA miler ran a hell of an anchor leg and Lopez Segura couldn't quite catch him despite running a 3:56.51 mile. When I went to look up the splits, I didn't see UVA at the top and evidently they got the old DQ. I had to download the rulebook to see, but I think one of their handoffs occurred outside the zone. Hokies time of 9.28.66 was good for a Meet Record and Seasons Best.
Khalil Bedoui finished 9th in the weight throw so no team points there.
After Day 1, the top three are as follows:
Women
1. VT - 48
2. Duke - 27.5
3. NCST - 27
Men
1. Louisville - 25.5
2. VT - 21
3. Notre Dame - 19
Good day for the heptathletes with all three scoring points. Sean Murphy finishes 3rd with 5756 points which is a new PB and might be just enough to squeak into the NCAAs but we will have to see what happens in all the conference championships. Jacob Spotswood in his first heptathlon back from last years injury finished 4th with 5504. Clay Eckert had a hell of an event with a PB in each event except the long jump to grab two important team points with a 7th place finish.
Ava Hassebrock got out fast and ran a hell of mile to lead her heat start to finish and set a new PB time of 4:37.12 which was the fastest prelim time. That gets her an automatic qualifier into tomorrow's final.
Viktor Idhammar takes the win in his 1 mile heat and Declan Rymer finished 4th in his heat, but was fast enough to qualify on time. Ryan Chevalier set a new PB of 4:08.06, but will not advance. William Jones was 6th in his heat and will not advance.
UVA will be stacking points in the mile tomorrow. They qualified five runners for the final which is nutty.
Layla Anderson wins her heat to qualify for the final tomorrow in the 60m hurdles.
Judson Lincoln IV wins his 400m heat and goes 2nd overall to qualify for the final. He broke the facility record for a moment before a runner from Clemson edges him out in the final heat. Kennedy Harrison won his heat and was 4th overall to qualify for the final. Amir Green was 2nd in his heat and 16th overall. Maximus James finished 3rd in his heat and 18th overall.
Cole Beck goes 2nd in his heat at 6.566 to set a new PB and qualify for the final on time. Ali Diaby went 6.736 and just missed out on the final with the 9th overall time. Diaby needed to be 0.006 seconds faster to make the final.
If I'm not mistaken, Cole Beck ties the school record with that 6.57 (officially) in the 60m.
Lindsey Butler and Hannah Ballowe make the finals in the women's 800m. Star Price and Grace Boone finished 12th and 13th.
The men's 800m is under review, but as it stands right now no Hokies made the final, but if something happens with one of the top 8, Ben Nagel is in 9th. Nicholas Plant finished 12th and Arlo Ludewick was 26th.
Men's long jump finished with Elijah Bell in 10th and Caleb Stephens in 11th.
Team scores after Day 2
Women
1. VT - 48
2. Duke - 43
3. NC State - 37
Men
1. Louisville - 35.5
2. VT - 34
3. Notre Dame - 19
Looks like there's no clear team favorites going into the final day, but the Hokies men's and women's teams are definitely both in good position. I don't want to jinx them, but I'd even say at least the men look like slight favorites.
On the men's side, I could definitely see it coming down to the 4x400 at the end, with VT, Clemson and Florida State fighting for the title. The men have good scoring opportunities in most of the remaining events, and look particularly strong in the pole vault and 400m.
The women can take the title if their remaining big guns finish first or second where they are particularly strong - this includes Layla Anderson in the 60m hurdles, Essence Henderson in the shot put, and Victoria Gorlova and Cierra Pyles in the triple jump. Duke won't be easy to hold off though.
GO HOKIES!!!
Big 4th place finish for ava Hassebrock in the mile. Declan rymer finished 7th on the mens side to snag 2 points.
Ladies took care of business in the triple jump. Victoria Gorlova repeats as ACC champ and Cierra Pyles takes 2nd.
5th place finish for Layla Anderson in the hurdles for another 4 points.
Tyson Jones took 2nd in the mens shot put.
Flash scoring has him as winning, no?
Men's shot put results
Either way, another big chunk of points. The men are looking good, looks like Louisville might actually be their biggest challenge.
Ha so I think Flash results had a typo on their first pdf scoring sheet. I went to check since I am doing all this on my phone. I still had the file which had the guy from WF in first. It has since been updated. Two more points for the good guys!
The broadcast solved the mystery. So Tyson Jones had his longest throw on his 2nd throw at 61'-3". Then the guy from Notre Dame went 61'-6", but brushed the block on the front of the ring with his foot. Protest was filed against Notre Dame and VT gets the win.
Kennedy Harrison takes 3rd and JL IV takes 4th in the 400m. Learning experience I think for JL IV who took some jostling from the guy from Clemson.
Cole Beck takes 2nd in the 60m.
Men's Pole Vault - this is how you win a championship. The Hokies had five guys in the event and all five scored points. Connor McClure wins with a new PB of 17'-7.75", Jacob Rice takes 2nd with 17'-3.75", Harrison Rice ties for 3rd, Joey Badalamenti takes 7th and Jacob Spotswood takes 8th.
Well the men have this wrapped up, but the women need to pull out an exceptional 4x400 if they want to win this.
Interesting foursome the Hokies used. Definitely shows how VT doesn't really have many true quarter milers. They used Star Price, Layla Anderson, Barbora Malikova, and Grace Boone to run 3:44.86 so we just have to see how that stacks up.
Holy shit. So Duke just ran a remarkable 4x400 aiming for a time that would get them into NCAAs, but the anchor runner was in a dead sprint with the Miami anchor and dropped the baton right before the finish. Duke gets DQ'd. I feel really bad for the Duke anchor runner.
Genuinely the biggest instance of "grabbing defeat from the jaws of victory" i have ever seen in sports.
100%. Duke has had a great meet and VT definitely stole one today.
Well there is the Karma for the womens 4x400, Diaby gets knocked over on the exchange for the 2nd leg and is now out.
Edit - well upon the replay Diaby was a little too aggressive trying to get in front of the FSU runner.
I just watched the women's 4x400 on YouTube and it's absolutely astonishing how it ended. The Duke runner dropped the baton with literally 2 steps left in the race. If she holds on to it for half a second longer, Duke is ACC champions. As happy as I am for VT, this is gut-wrenching to watch.
Women's 4x400m finals
If you only want to watch the anchor leg of the final heat, skip to 24:30 in the video.
Holy shit is right! I was literally going to post "looks like the only way Duke doesn't win is if they get DQ'd" to your last comment right before I went to the gym. I guess that's like a reverse jinx since I didn't actually say it. I actually feel really bad for Duke, but I was prepared to come home and say that the VT women have nothing to be ashamed of for coming in 2nd, and that also goes for winning in this incredible way! The Hokie women had some amazing performances and they deserve this title.
Lets hear it for your men's and women's 2023 ACC Indoor Track Team Champions!

NCAA Qualifiers based on the participant list here
Men
-Cole Beck 60m (10 seed) and 200m (16 seed)
-Chauncey Chambers Triple Jump (15 seed)
Women
-Lindsey Butler - 1 Mile (4 seed). Looks like she also had a good enough time to sneak into the 800m as the 16seed, but I'm guessing the coaching staff thought she had a better chance of doing well in the mile.
-Kenna Stimmel - Pole Vault (6 seed)
-Julia Fixsen - Pole Vault (7 seed)
-Journey Gurley - Pole Vault (14 seed)
-Victoria Gorlova - Triple Jump (15 seed)
-Rebecca Mammel - Weight Throw (6 seed)
-Sara Killinen - Weight Throw (9 seed). Side note that Killinen's throw to take 2nd in the ACC Championships was good for a new Finland national record.
NCAAs start tomorrow and run through Saturday.
*edits to times below, I missed the fine print that the schedule is in mountain time so edited to reflect east coast time*
The ladies are well represented with the pole vaulters kicking things off tomorrow at 4 PM. I think both Stimmel and Fixsen have a good shot at team points but Gurley will likely need to have a really good day to finish in the top 8.
Lindsey Butler has her semi final run at 6 pm as the 4 seed. I expect her to make the final which will be held on Saturday at 6 pm. She has an excellent chance to score team points.
Mammel and Killinen take on the weight throw tomorrow at 6 pm. Both ladies have a really good shot at scoring team points.
Victoria Gorlova will start at 545 on Saturday in the triple jump.
Cole Beck runs the semi in the 60m tomorrow at 915 and then the semi in the 200m will be at 1025. I think he can sneak into the final of the 60m but I think it will be a challenge to make the final in the 200m. The finals for both events will be Saturday at 910 for the 60m and 950 for the 200m.
Chauncey Chambers and the triple jump start on Saturday at 845.
All events will be streamed on ESPN+
Great to see the Hokies women so well represented. Would love to see some first-team All-Americans (top 8) this weekend.
There's a lot on the table for Cole Beck this weekend too. He's currently tied for the school record in both the 60m (6.57) and 200m (20.62), so he has one more opportunity to take sole possession of either of those records.
The 200 record is shared by Beck and Jacory Patterson, who is looking awesome right now for Florida in both the 200m and 400m. I wouldn't be shocked to see Patterson win titles in both races, although he's not the favorite in either.
Live results can be found here
Lindsey Butler takes a comfortable 3rd in Heat 1 and will move on to the final tomorrow. She also gave a very nice interview after the heat.
Kenna Stimmel got the ladies on the board with her 4th place finish in the pole vault. Rough day for Julia Fixsen who finished 11th. Journey finished 13th.
In the weight throw, Rebecca Mammel finished 7th and Sara Killinen finished 12th.
These two events give the ladies 7 team points.
Considering that Stimmel (Fr.), Fixsen (Jr.) and Gurley (So.) will all be back, the Hokies should be a beast next year (and of course in outdoor track in the Spring!).
A junior and two sophomores finished ahead of Stimmel, but she was 2 inches from matching first place (14'5 1/4" vs 14'7 1/4"). And she was the only freshman in the entire field. She should very realistically have winning a national title in the pole vault on her goals before she leaves VT.
Coke Beck goes 6.63 in the 60 and will not advance to the finals.
Cole Beck goes 20.67 to finish 13th in the 200m and will not advance to the final.
I would have liked to see Beck make the finals in either the 60 or the 200, but he ran very well-within 5 hundredths of a second off his personal best in both events.
And major CONGRATS to him for tying the school record in both the 60 and 200 this season!!! Can't wait to see what he's able to do in the 100m in the spring.
That 200 field was very fast. Im looking forward to the final tonight.
Matthew Boling picked a good time to look like Matthew Boling in the 200m finals. I did not see him dropping a 20.12 today.
Lindsey Butler finished 10th in the mile and Victoria Gorlova finished 15th in the triple jump to wrap up the womens competition.
Hokies finished with 7 team points which puts them tied for 28th.
