Different Day....
The last time the Hokies faced the Eagles looking to avoid the trap Holiday game on the road and had that glow of being ranked. The Eagles played bullyball the entire second half en route to the beginning of an ugly slide for the Hokies including injuring Hunter Cattoor. They now lead the series 22-13 and come in having won the last four. That said, there will be no trap here, and the Hokies seem to have grasped the position they are in, playing much more aggressive on both ends of the floor.

The Eagles are coached by Earl Grant. He began his college coaching career at The Citadel as an assistant coach in 2002. Boston College is his second college head coaching job, taking over the job in 2021 after coaching College of Charleston for seven seasons. He has a 24-33 overall record guiding the Eagles.

The Eagles are a below .500 overall but have a one game advantage on the Hokies in the ACC win column. Since playing the Hokies they have gone 4-7 with wins over Louisville, Notre Dame twice and a surprising win over #20 Clemson.

The Eagles are a veteran team by way of the portal but still seemed to lack an identity early on and may be without Demarr Langford, who suffered a knee injury and has missed the last two games. Langford gave BC 8 points, 6 rebounds and a block in the last game against the Hokies. More critical, he gave the Eagles 41 minutes on the floor.

The one revelation since that game though has been the play of Quinten Post, who has twice been ACC Player of the Week. Post has scored in double digits each of the last ten games and been a force defensively with blocks or adjusted shots. Last time out though it was Devin McGlockton that brutalized the Hokies inside both scoring and physically. While Ashton-Langford led the Eagles in scoring, it was McGlockton that turned around an eight point Hokies lead at halftime with 15 points in the second half and overtime. This team ranks in the bottom third nationally in rebounding, scoring, three-point shooting, free throw shooting, personal fouls and turnovers. The only stat they rank in the top 100 on is blocked shots. Coach Grant spreads the minutes out pretty evenly across nine players.

Coach Grant defensively employs a full court defense the majority of the game. The problem though is that teams have been exposing this defense for quick scoring opportunities. The Eagles are experimenting with a slightly less aggressive mid court defense to cut down on these chances. Expect to see a mix of zone and man-to-man at different points. Defense though is definitely their better half.

Offensively, Coach Grant uses a motion offense but with guard dribble penetration. The Eagles do not focus on perimeter shooting, likely because they have not been very good at it. Eight players are averaging at least 6.2 points per game. They average over 14 turnovers per contest. They get to the free throw line nearly 18 attempts per contest but shoot a mediocre 67% as a team.

What to expect from Boston College?
Forwards Quinten Post and CJ Penha will be a tough matchup down low for Mutts and Basile. Post has been in double-digit scoring for the last ten games. He has been particularly troublesome getting open looks on the perimeter so Basile will need to ensure he stretches his defense out similar to how he played Vander Plas. Kidd and Poteat will likely be called on to counter McGlockton when he is on the floor. A wise use of Poteats fouls would not be a bad thing to keep him from getting easy layups.

Full Court Defense, Mid Court defense, and multiple styles of defense. This may be the smallest lineup in the ACC. BC has generally been successful when they limit shooting fouls and win the rebounding battle. Four of their five ACC wins opponents scored less than ten from the line. The same applies to rebounding. The only anomaly was the win over Clemson. In that game Clemson couldn't hit the broad side of a barn, shooting 31% from the floor.

In conference losses though, they have struggled to win the paint battle on both ends. In losses, they are allowing 11 points per game in second chance scoring. Rebounding defensively looks slightly more balanced overall but that can be partially explained by opponents taking more overall shots. BC has committed nine or more turnovers in six out of eight ACC losses and 10 of 13 overall. In the last game though, the Hokies allowed 17, again 17 Offensive Rebounds that fueled 13 second chance points. The Hokies had an equally stellar 16 Offensive Rebounds but only converted that to 7 points.

ACC Opponents average 72 points per game against the Eagles. BC opponents are shooting 39% from the perimeter, creating an almost nine point per game differential. BC makes up some of that with paint scoring, averaging nearly 40 points per game inside.

The Hokies
Cattoor may not say it but he will be looking to make BC his red-headed step child after how the last one ended. As long as he doesn't over do things on the defensive end and get in foul trouble, expect a 20+ night from Cattoor in this one.

The most important matchup though will be Basile vs Post. If Basile can emulate his last few performances, especially on the defensive end, BC loses a significant part of their overall game plan over the last ten games.
Pedulla/Cattoor have another huge task in trying to limit Makai Ashton-Langford , who put up 21 against the Hokies last time out. He has range out to the logo, similar to Cattoor so you must guard him as soon as he crosses mid-court.

Make baskets inside 4 feet. This was a consistent issue in the first game but the team has greatly improved at finishing in recent games.

The bench must contribute. Last time the Hokies got a solitary point from Poteat and nothing else from the rest of the roster. No word yet on whether Maddox has rejoined the team but the focus here would be more on Poteat or Kidd providing some bench points.

Highlight of the Boohoo Tears game

Pedulla Oblongata and Grant "the defensive machine" Basile

In Closing
The Hokies are home, rested and motivated for multiple levels of revenge. I expect some testy moments in this one but if they keep their eye on the win its all that's matters.

Scoring inside will open the perimeter to get Cattoor multiple open looks. The balance defensively will be playing aggressive enough to win while staying in control to stay out of foul trouble.

Hokies win 77-66, not quite hitting the spread but still winning where the final 60 seconds are not a nail biter.

This is a Four Popcorn Decision.

Have we gotten any offensive rebounds?? Looks like we're just throwing it up and the retreating back.

I said during the last timeout....why aren't we putting mutts at the free throw line against the zone and doing the same thing we did to the hoos? First play we did that and it worked.....

No hustle. Pop a 3 and then watch them get a long rebound. I'm all for finding a rhythm but hustle for the board instead of running back up the court.

We deserve to lose. This is pathetic. Lack of effort.

โ€œThese people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.โ€

Don't necessarily think it's lack of effort, just a total lack of playmakers available and not an effective game plan

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

I would agree if we were hustling and pushing the ball down low and then kicking it back out. But it feels like we're running down the court, not letting anyone get in position and then jacking up a 3. They've had some nice bounces for long offensive rebounds, but they're getting in position.

โ€œThese people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.โ€

That's my point, "pushing the ball down low" is a matter of game plan, not effort

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

Bickerstaff draws a foul in the rebound meanwhile post never gets called reaching over basiles back every rebound

This is half is complete ass and on mr.young's shoulders. You can blame the 3 ball but this is a coach issue. They are uninspired and look slow. I would wager that the team had a uniquely hard workout recently and isn't back to fluidity. I've been wrong before but we will not lose this game.

Why are we so hesitant to go for any rebound on offense? At this point a second chance bucket is gold and BC don't seem to want to push the tempo. That Camden shot and bounce would've been grabbable but once shots up everyone's already leaving the zone to get back.

So if Mutts does that early on in the half Post is on the bench. The coaching staff or team just always seem situationally unaware in these bad losses.

Rob Peterson
VTCC
Charlie/Hotel Company

This loss pretty much seals our fate for post season. That is unless we have another magical run in the ACCT. It's really unfortunate as this is a really talented squad. Very undisciplined at times. Very discombobulated at times. Total lack of awareness and physicality at times.

This team is a real head scratcher to me. Really good or really bad...

Is coronavirus over yet?

Here's my squad makeup on ncaa

Situational awareness: 0/100
Three ball off screens: (typically) 90/100
Set pieces: 90/100
Free throw shooting: 50/100
Dunk ability: 1/100

Our tourney fate was already sealed. We weren't getting an invite after 7 straight conference losses. The only way we dance is winning the ACCT. Other than that all we are is going to do is ruin someone else's season.

Rob, people get upset anytime I speak negatively about mutts. Love mutts,
But the man will go 35 minutes at half speed and turn it on for 5 minutes a game. Seems disinterested at many points and lazy with the ball

So we had 90+% of our shots today taken by just 4 players: Basile, Mutts, Cattoor, and Pedulla.

This staff's roster construction is atrocious. There is no balance, no depth, not enough talent.

Would have loved to see kidd get a chance to bang around with post down low early. We showed we could make it inside early and then completely abandoned it. Kidd has show he can hang and make shots down low, didn't have much to lose

My buddy remarked that naheim alleyne could have been great for this roster

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

Based on Alleyne's numbers, it looks like he's taken yet another step back this season at UCONN. Smaller role and less efficient. I guess he gets to play for a team that might win some tournament games though, so good for him I guess.

I get that we have been unlucky with Rice's injury and Maddox's decline + personal situation, but we don't have enough talent at the guard positions. I like MJ Collins and he has a lot of potential, but we simply cannot have someone play 30 minutes attempting only one shot and expect to beat anybody. Pedulla has talent but is inconsistent, he is forced into too big of a role due to lack of other options. Cattoor offers some much needed shooting, but not a whole ton going to the basket. Maddox just kind of fell off this season, hopefully all is well with him. But there have been lots of games where the guards have put up embarrassing shooting numbers.

The big men have been carrying the offense lately, but it must be said that Basile and Kidd aren't great on defense. Camden doesn't fit into either category (guard or big) but he doesn't offer too much IMO

It's just not a particularly talented team, and not a lot of depth. The injury to one freshman (Rice) shouldn't hurt us this much.

Yes- and someone explain to me how a 3 guard oriented coach comes in to a season with 5 guards, two of them freshman?

'Its easy to grin, when your ship comes in, and you've got the stock market beat,
but the man worthwhile, is the man who can smile, when his shorts are too tight in the seat'

I am not sure if the face guard he was wearing was throwing off his shot and he would rather pass it than work through it.

Gotta love consistency. Now watch us win in Cameron.

Just so soft and embarrassing. Got ran out of our own gym by a shit team.

Like I love this team and the guys on it, which makes it so frustrating when they aren't living up to their potential.

The Maddox slump we should've been ready for. His shooting last season was too good not to see some regression. I really hope we didn't run off Alleyene because you had to believe even after the end of last season that his body of work is stronger than Maddox. Also maybe we should've used that open scholarship to get some more depth on the wing. We've got 13 of them to use why not use them all

I don't think soft is the correct description. More like hungover or leadfooted

I agree with those but getting run off your home court by one of the worst teams in the conference when you need a win is soft
