HOKIE NIL: Triumph Digital Network officially launches

https://vt.triumphnil.com/discover

This is probably the simplest way to broadly contribute to VT NIL.

Multiple tiered packages start at $10/mo and increase up to $6000/yr

Thanks for sharing. It's a good look for VT.

College sports are so fucking weird. Fans pay LLCs that turnaround and pay players for autographs and online shout outs, while the leagues and teams that organize the sport don't. It's just wild.

I thought you liked the weirdness of cfb

Onward and upward

I do - though this isn't exactly the weirdness I'm talking about (this is).

I just think it's wild that fans have to create an operate an LLC to pay players and win games, because the organizing body isn't allowed to.

This was the first time I spent any time poking around a collective's website. It just hit differently. The fact that I have to pay a third party who pays an athlete for 'shoutouts' or 'meet ups', and the amount of people/dollars who sign up for this in part determines where. Kid goes to school is just laughably inefficient. All of this to preserve this notion of 'amateurism' because.... Why do we think so highly of amateurs? Because it's somehow morally superior to being a professional?

5 years ago, I was very opposed to schools/conferences paying a player for being on a roster. Now, I believe it's the only sensible way forward.

I'm happy to see this, but what does "100% goes to support VT athletes" mean? The website and administration is free?

I'd be happier if I knew exactly how much was going directly to the athletes, because I know it's not 100%. Though I think it's likely that more gets through this method of administration than when buying a T-shirt with someone's number on it.

The website and administration is possibly covered by the NIL collective, which exists beyond these digital offerings.

This is my understanding as well. Corporate sponsorship monies cover the operational costs.

Make it about all sports, show club games, show intramural games, let's get the most random stuff on there to watch. I miss what espn2 used to be.

Exactly, I'd gladly watch a rugby or hockey game over putting some filler show on Netflix.

Yep! Early days of ESPN were in my college years and the "off the wall"/"bizarre" sports they showed were awesome! (Along with the early "pre-political" days of David Letterman but that's a different subject)

I think my favorite was an annual contest between two towns somewhere in Europe(Italy maybe?) - it was something like football/rugby combo in that you advanced the ball to a goal across a field. But there were otherwise only two rules- 1) no substitutions; 2) you couldn't KILL someone(and no that isn't a metaphor)! Otherwise, anything went- wanna clothesline someone running by you? cool. Wanna grab hold of someone and do a submission hold? Sure why not. It was fascinating to watch!

Hmm -now that I think about it, they still show something similar today- its called "NCAA women's basketball!"
(/s but not totally)

Calcio Fiorentino. It's an insane 4 team tournament played every year in Florence. Teams are divided by which district of Florence their families originate from.

Thank you so much for the name of it !-I spent years trying to find a description that I could show to my now-adult son of this wild event. (It was a hazy memory from 40 ish years ago and now I can show him!

Netflix - Home Game - Calcio Storico.

I immediately knew what you were talking about from having watched the netflix sometime after Tiger King and The Last Dance and before comedians started doing live shows without masks.

Andre Kendrick with the grey beard. Man, I'm getting old.

Tell that to my bald head and grey beard.

My brain initially read this as "Anna Kendrick with a grey beard" and I got really confused.

I do art stuff.

I'm pretty impressed with the new NIL portal. Poking around on the interwebs, seems like we're making it way easier for the 'average' fan to support NIL than (m)any other schools. The involvement of the monogram club/alumni is huge as well.

Whit has always said (something to the effect of) 'we might not be the highest paying, but we will have the best NIL infrastructure' - I'm seeing the vision.

Okay, I'm buying a shirt. This is fire.

Not sure what this truly means. My guess is that by Triumph including legacy athletes, Triumph thinks they can get more attention, more attraction from fans, and thus more dollars. And I would hope that the compensation for the legacy players is low but fair, such that it is like the legacy athlete is contributing more value than the compensation he receives. A pay-it-back donation to your alma mater, but not complete charity.

Definitely an avenue I was not expecting for an NIL collective, but Triumph might be on to something here.

πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ πŸ¦ƒ

  1. It legitimizes Triumph for athletes
  2. It's another way to bring former athletes back into the fold
  3. It gets fans excited and more likely to give to NIL

I'm really impressed with what I've seen over the past few weeks.

It was probably already legitimate. It is advertised everywhere, endorsed by Babcock, and with Brendan Hill and KJ, it has athlete star power. Vick provides further validation and may convince more former athletes to get involved.
It's also a pretty cool way to provide an outlet for fans to interact with a Hokie great.

I have no idea what other collectives at other schools are doing, but Triumph does seem to be proactive and really well done. I dont know how they raised their initial capital to get this implemented, but it's pretty impressive thus far. I just hope it does what it should for VT athletes and becomes a point of attraction of recruits.

Maybe another inkling for recruits/current players that if they can become a transcendent athlete for VT the NIL won't necessarily end when they graduate.

Yes,that's the Hokie Bird riding a camel. Why'd you ask?

Random factoid, my son got a picture of those two during the interview because he was invited by a friend's family to watch the spring game in the booth. I think that capped off his senior year experience.

Corey Moore next. A regular terrordome podcast or interview piece with him would be fantastic IMO.

Bruce Smith too. Sign with VT, get a cord of firewood!

But seriously, Smith's landing could toss in some living arrangements.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Bet Bruce would be in for some free rails lmao

Yeah, I'm honestly surprised he's not already involved with one of the collectives.

I was also surprised to see that The Hokie Way isn't more advertised. It seems more palatable for people skeptical of the current NIL environment (like myself) and Tyrod and JRob are board members.

Yea... I don't know how many recruits are making decisions based on charitable giving/

The way I understood it was that THW connects an athlete with and creates a campaign for a participating charity.

I assumed the athlete was still getting reimbursed for their name, image, and likeness and that most wouldn't really mind or might even prefer to use their time to promote a charity instead of hawking some nonsense on Instagram.

Again that was just my understanding of the collective, I might be way off.

when I saw this headline I immediately thought it was related to this

They should absolutely sign him.

Maybe get him a scholarship.

Just before seeing this comment, I was on the Recruiting thread and saw VT offered Brady Smigiel and my mind instantly went to Robert Smigel, the comic behind Triumph the Insult Dog.

Not sure that means anything, just a weird coincidence, I guess. Perhaps it means we both watched a fair amount of Conan back in the day.

Am I the only one that thinks "Congratulations, gobble gobble chumps!" when reading the title of this thread?
