It's early...but the "depth" Mike young said we had this year looks to be just depth with no substance.
Hope that this doesn't age well and they look like world beaters come ACC time or it's gonna be another disappointing season come tourney time.
Only consistent depth seems to be Poteat and Nickel since I consider Long a starter. Was surprised we didn't see Nickel at all and Collins played 16 minutes.

Offense not looking that good either. They are getting shots; but it seems to me they are having to work much harder than they should to get shots against Campbell.
I feel like Seth Greenberg seems to be more on ACCN now than the national programming on ESPN. Not sure of its intentional or just my perception. Just feel like he used to be more on the big games or big days of national stage games.

I don't understand why they don't try to push the ball more against the press. They spend almost 10 seconds passing the ball back and forth between the guards and make no effort to move toward the hoop.
Campbell's been doing that for years too. With any advance scout, they should be able to break it easily considering the athleticism advantage.
Agree. Just seems they are out of sync on both ends. Campbell is consistent with using a press so they should have been better prepared for it.
Interior defense was questionable but looking a little better now. ACC teams will take advantage
Pedulla about to foul out in a game the Hokies have not been able to get any separation in. Getting beat rebounding. Getting beat to the rim over and over too.

Had this same thought....if you had even told me last year the Hokies would need Kidd to take over games I wouldn't have believed it.
I thought he showed signs of putting together last year...just wasn't consistent yet.
Plus now he seems to understand just dunk that shit when you're next to the basket. missed a ton of layups last year cause he was just too timid.

I agree. I can't tell you how many times the last three years I screamed "just dunk it" as one of our bigs went up with some soft finesse bs.

Announcer over and over pointing out the press taking ten seconds off shot clock with no apparent adjustment by Hokies is especially frustrating
A couple of trends from the CMY era:
1. His teams regularly struggle against the press. I'm not sure why this is a continued issue, but I guess it's the Mike Young way.
2. We are just plain bad on defense. I can't tell if its a scheme thing (some of you basketball gurus can probably diagnose things) or a shear lack of athleticism, but we don't play defense.
3. To expand... We aren't, and have not been under CMY, a very athletic team. We simply don't possess ACC athleticism and it really shows up in two specific areas. (1) Defense. (2) Getting to the basket on offense.
4. We live and die by the three. I understand this is what CMY wants, but some adjustments throughout the game, or hell, even throughout the season, would likely be very helpful.
5. We are a very finesse team.
I love CMY and think he's an amazing fit in Blacksburg! However, I've tempered my expectations regarding his tenure here. I think we are a perennial NIT/Bubble team. And honestly, that's a hell of a lot better than we have been over the last 20 years, so I guess we should be ok with it?
Announcer saying we have a "big game against Wofford" and "real challenge" unfortunately says everything about this team
Collins just ain't 'it'. I hope Nickel turns out to be 'it'.
For those of you who have trouble keeping track of the schedules, the Ladies play Houston Christian tomorrow at 6 PM on ACCNx.
My biggest takeaway from tonight is that we'd be a very good team in the Coastal Athletic Association.
Mike Young has earned the benefit of the doubt, but I'm just not seeing a lot of talent on this team. Kidd looked great though.
This team is BAD. Running Rice out the door was the last straw.
Not sure we're even NIT caliber this year.
Rice didn't want to be in Blacksburg, I really don't think it's that complicated
Coming off the bench with MJ Collins in front of him told him all needed to know about MY. Guys who can create their own shot - have continuously hit the portal under Young. Not a coincidence.
Get with the "Wofford-esque" program- or get out.
Not sure he was "run out" of anywhere. Seems like we could sure use him, but from all accounts, not sure we would have had him at this point even if he was still on the team.

Yeah....outside of Kidd, Hokies were 13-46 from the floor. Throw in Poteat with Kidd and it's 10-42.... 23.8%
Getting out rebounded by Campbell another real kick in the teeth.
I feel like there's a few issues with this team.
First, unless he figures some stuff out, I'm not sure Robby Beran has any real juice. He's not shooting well, he kinda just looks behind out there. 27 minutes to get six points and three boards just isn't enough. He had some steals, he's long, but unless the overall team defense improves a lot, or his offense does, he's wasted minutes.
Second, we just can't handle Pedulla having bad games. Losing Rice hurts there (although by all accounts, he wasn't going to be in a position to help early in the season anyway.) But, our guard depth just isn't enough to handle a bad game from him. He needs more than 5 points and 5 assists in every game. If he isn't putting up 15-8 on a regular basis, we're in trouble. Let along against Campbell.
And Collins just needs to find it. Or Nickel does. We need another scorer, ideally one who can make a few points on their own. But boy, this didn't feel good.
Really would like to see more of Nickel.
Collins getting 32 minutes to go 2-10 from the floor with 3 rebounds just isn't it. He had a couple scrappy defensive plays which is likely why Young leaves him in but he is like a poor version of Wabissa Bede.
I will also add that Cattoor looks banged up. He injured his leg in the South Carolina game and it looked like he aggravated it tonight, and he's just another piece we can't afford to not have at full health. If he needs to sit to get health then I think that needs to happen now and not later once it gets worse and takes a longer time to get him back.
Pedulla had a shit game. He did not have his normal swagger. Lost position on defense way too often. Missed a few threes and stop trying to take them. Not sure if that was because he off, or he was off because of it. Wondering if he also had a bug, but had to play through it?
Collins is painful to watch on offense. We need a better option there, but Young looked young. Be great if he put on the gas in development. Hopefully Nickel can be the answer........
Kidd and Poteate have both looked much improved, but I am concerned if this can continue against ACC interiors.
Cattoor missed from deep early, but had a solid game.
Brenan does nothing to help us offensively, and consistently sends the other team to the line on defense. I'd like to see more of Long, but it does look like he is still trying to understand what to do in our system. Head tying up his feet if you will.
This team has a long way to go. Tonights effort will lead to some bad losses against mid-tier opponents. The way we played against USC will not get us a winning record, and that was way better than last night -probably because we over-played our starters.
This team- Like all of Mike Young's team's- will live and die by the 3 point shot. It's much easier to defend an athletic 3 or 4 when you have a 15 point lead. Our defense looks much better when we are good on offense. This team could be pretty good if the shots fall- if not- more of the same from last year.
