Noticed this when I was on Hokiesports.com rather than working on a Friday......
Connor Serven
6' 8", 200 lbs, Forward
Played at Illinois for 3 seasons and last season at Eastern Michigan, where he averaged 3.3 points & 3.1 rebounds in 31 games. Seems like a very late addition, but I guess if there is a roster spot and he adds depth to the bench it does not hurt to have him. I will never say no to more height at the forward position.

According to Hokiesports.com, he scored 3 points in 3 seasons at Illinois. Under Mike Young's tutelage, I expect his production to at least double.
WADR... if he is in our rotation its going to be a long year.
We had two guys on the team last year (Michael Ward and Connor Venable) who totaled 0 points, 0 assists and 1 rebound combined. Serven may be Kareem Abdul-Jabbar by comparison.
If he's at least a cool dude, give him a uniform.
Those guys are walk-ons.
I'd rather have 1 scholarship player that gets 3 pts and boards per game than two walk-ons who might contribute in a blowout
Yeah, not really much to be excited about for MBB this year. I'm more interested in WBB and seeing if Duffy can keep the momentum, which at least she seems to be doing on the recruiting front.
I think this very well might be CMY's last year.
You think by choice or force?
It would be by choice if he leaves.
I would say possible by force, but I guess we would have to have an absolute disaster of a season for that to happen. It just feels like the MBB program is not really doing anything to get me excited about the program, and feels like we are on a downward trend. Just my opinion/feeling really.
While I agree there is a downward trend and less hope, I think VT athletic department and Triumph NIL are all in on elevating the football team. I doubt they fire him and more likely let him ride through the end of his contract through the 2026-2027 season.
I think VT fans will more or less be OK with mediocre basketball for 3 years if it means the football team is playing at a high level.
I guess we can look at it this way. Schools in the B1G received a payout of about $60M, SEC about $51M and ACC about $44M. While the SEC and B1G are spending more on their basketball programs because of the extra cash, VT can do the opposite and allocate more cash to football. This can get VT's football budget closer to that of an SEC or B1G football budget. And it seems the allocation of Triumph NIL funds are also being heavily directed towards football over MBB.
Whit won't fire him- yet. If its after this year, its a retirement moreso than getting fired.
I'm not convinced that we're NOT going to be pretty decent this season.
Mike Young is a great coach (if not necessarily a great recruiter), and he's turned a lot of pretty good players into All-ACC players (Aluma, Cattoor, Mutts).
It's a mixed up, muddled up, shook up world in college basketball right now. I have no idea if we're going to win 10 games, or 25. But we're probably not the only team that's just turned over almost its entire roster.
As long as he doesn't take minutes away from Jones and Johnson seeing significant development time this year, I am fine with it.
He missed most of last season due to injury and they are applying for a medical hardship waiver to get him a second year in the program.
Really not sure he adds much behind practice depth.
