QB controversy FAM!!

Probably shouldn't be tbh....

Warning- Filter lost.

"Look at this... This is just spectacular.... These people are losing their minds"

Tough to accurately judge a qb based mostly on how they perform against the vaunted uva defense.

For sure. But when was the last time we had a QB that looked the part? Tyrod? LT3? Braxton that one game against OSU?

A good QB should look like a great QB against garbage competition. It's one game for sure but last night Pop looked the part. The next thing will be if he's here next year and if Bowen tutelage doesn't regress him all off-season.

when was the last time we had a QB that looked the part?

Drones against UVA in 2023 lol

The last game the Oline had a good outing.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I was thinking this last night. Do we think we are trending in the right direction every year because we finish the season beating LOLuva?

Slight /s

I'm taking this victory against LOLuva in a vacuum for what it is. Beating Lil brother.

Looking at the season overall. I think the trend has not nose dived but it definitely has flattened a bit IMHO.

Pry has got to figure out how to close the one score games.

Lol it's one thing to be deluded into thinking your school is Ivy caliber (classic uva fan stuff). But it is a whole new level of deluded to think the Ivy league is willing to expand and add schools. Yeah right bro

In fairness, the Ivy League is nowhere near as good as it thinks it is.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Hoos will fit right in!

In terms of what? I don't think they think they're good at football, and in terms of academics, I'd say you're confused. There are some companies, more likely things like law firms that would only very rarely hire anyone not from an Ivy. And while you're at it, go look at the officers of major companies and see where they got their MBAs from.

But again, if you're talking sports, I doubt they think they're competitive at large, they probably care way more about competing with each other.

Depends on the sport, some of the schools have won NCAA titles in the last 24 years. Lacrosse and Fencing are big sports for them. So they do compete, but they don't offer scholarships so they really care more about beating each other.

Between graduate school and postdoctoral work, I spent almost 7 years inside of the Ivy League. Trust me, they are nowhere near as good as they think they are. Spend any length of time there and be objective in your observations and you will find those institutions contain large numbers of people that I would describe as highly intelligent, but not too bright. Also, it was essentially impossible to fail there due to grade inflation. And this was the 1990s. From what I hear now, it's pretty much impossible to get less than a B.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

I'm assuming not all programs within Ivies are equal. There may be some programs like robotics (just as an example) that have better programs outside, at tech heavy schools. I did reference law as one area where I believe high power firms are much more likely to recruit from compared to other schools.

I assume an analogy would be getting into and getting a degree in engineering at Tech is a lot harder and more impressive than getting a degree in psychology, even though it's the same school.

Yes and no. I'd say the difference was not between majors but between undergrads vs. grads. It was still impossible to do poorly across undergrad majors. If you get in you could sleepwalk to Bs and Cs. Most of the kids I taught in fields like Biochem and Bio were good, but Fs at VT would be Cs there.

In the grad school in the natural sciences, it was hard. Had some friends in music and that sure was demanding too. Can't say about graduate school in majors like Philosophy or Comparative Literature (yes, that was a grad major in the 1990s). Anyone willing to spend $50,000 a year or whatever it was back then to get a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature may have intelligence, but they are not very bright.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

Man, the Ivy League isn't always about having the smartest people, its about knowing the right people. There are doors that open just by having a degree from one of those schools that the rest of us will never see, especially in upper and executive management at any major corporation.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Oh it is 100% - well, maybe not 100%, perhaps more like 50-60% - about knowing the right people and being in the network. The people there are not any smarter than those at VT. My point is about the schools and the people not being anywhere as good as they think they are. I swear, some of the people I met there have to breath through their mouths because their noses are curled so far up in the air that there is not enough oxygen to breath where their noses end.

Not all, of course. There are regular people there - especially in the grad school for sciences like Biophysics and Biochemistry - who went to places like VT, University of Indiana and Angelo State for undergrad. But there are lot who match the worst of the stereotypes. And no matter how bad you do, it was essentially impossible to get less than a C in the 1990s if you are an undergrad there. From what I've read, it is darn hard to get a B now.

And I come back to there is a big difference between being smart and being intelligent. At least how I define the terms. A lot, and I mean a whole lot, of the people coming out of Ivy League schools have high IQs but have minimal common sense, practical life skills, etc. And we are definitely seeing private businesses waking up to this now. Could give examples, but many would be crossing the political line.

Recovering scientist working in business consulting

There is some truth to that. The alma mater is an early boost, for sure.

However, if you're smart and work hard, doors open, regardless of the alma mater. There is always room at the top.

3 things:
1) you have to be a better school than uva to be an ivy, and it's cute they think they're on par with Duke and Vandy, UVA is a safety school for all others mentioned
2) Vandy ain't leaving money on the table to go Ivy
3) Ryan Day ain't coming there
3)

I would love Ryan Day there. We would still get a guaranteed W every year.

Someone start writing Pop Watson a check FAM!

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

And they remain LOLuva for another year!

Go Hokies!

FAM! the only thing that sucked today is that we didn't get to annihilate that soft ass brie eating douchbag dildo pussy-ass Colandrea again!

Words can't really describe my hate for uva. Their attitudes are despicable. Their overconfidence is nauseating. Their outfits of Vineyard Vines and Smathers & Branson are overpiced, similar to their degree. They had to pretend to like Tony Bennett basketball. Anthony Colandrea looks like he peaked his junior year of high school when he got a tug in the bathroom. But hey, maybe next year right? Going from 4-1 to 5-7 and is well deserved and indicative of their program, just a pure loss of hope as time goes on. FAM.

FAM + APR finishing the season as the nation's leader in sacks!

Pop gets another game to roll around in the grass!!

3 sacks for APR from stats I see... Think he leads NCAA right now with 16 ๐Ÿคž

Think the guy from BC ended with 16.5 but this is a fam thread so we're truncating that shit. APR tied for sack lead

Here lies It's a Stroman Jersey I Swear, surpassed in life by no one because he intercepted it.

what are the odds we end up in a bowl near tampa?

Danny is always open

Since I live 40 minutes from Raymond James Stadium, I would be down with this!

Also - credit to all of you who went to tonight's game. That's a lot of hours in the cold!

Pop has the juice. The team was fired up and chippy in the best way.

(...but I am a little worried the game went well enough we won't see enough staff changes)

Tuten climbing to 2nd in rushing for the ACC!

Considering that he missed 2 (?) games due to injury that is even more impressive.

Of all my dumb ideas that have ever run through my head, being excited at the rumor of Tony Elliot being the next coach for us back in 2020 has to be the dumbest.

That guy is a certified dud and a dweeb. A fitting combo for that place.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

It's amazing how open our recievers look when we have some one that can get them the ball(and are playing UVA). Lots of great plays, lots of good reason to look forward to next season (assuming you gloss over clock managment). Bowen got Pop ready for this game and it showed.

Not to mention a QB who can actually complete a deep pass.

Deposit whiskey, receive wisdom.

He (and drones) would have a lot more if our guys ran under them, to little effort on the deep balls half the time. There were at least 2 if not 3 low effort deep ball plays this gsme.

Hoo tears. And Busch. Fucking. Light. That and some sautรฉed onions is a hell of a post thanksgiving feast.

The last time UVa won in Blacksburg, there were only three Star Wars movies.

FAM!

Guys, I can only add so many more names to the list before I hit the character limit (I found this out a month or two back when I tried unsuccessfully to add something in there about firing Whit). At some point, more than just the first 3 names are going to need to be shorthanded. But that day is not today. Here goes FAM!

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

it's beautiful, beard

Yeah, this is what I was thinking :

MV7, MV5, LT3, K. Drones, G. Wells, B. Burmeister, R. Willis, J. Jackson, J. Evans, M. Brewer, T. Taylor, S. Glennon, and G. Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat G. Noel.

MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

You have to leave the last grant Noel full name as long as possible

Oh of course. It's the coup de grace. It's where the power lies. Always has been.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

He shall simply be referred to as Tyrod

"That's it guys. Let's get out of here. That cold drink's waitin' on us, let's go." - Mike Young after win no. 300.

I've read this over and over, and can't figure out why Pop Watson is not on this list.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

I'd wager it's because Pop still has upcoming games against UVA. Only QBs that have finished their careers undefeated get listed (I had the exact same thought as you for a hot second)

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

At this point, he's still undefeated against UVA, regardless of whether or not he has games left. Drones technically has games left, and he's on there.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

I'm not jinxing Pop like that.

I'm betting that Drones is done, one way or another.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

What's the standing on transfers that are undefeated while at VT but lose at another school?

Except I feel like you gotta leave the Grant for Noel. His name seems like a happy-go-lucky, mirthful Christmas character they couldn't beat (or something). Regardless, with a name like Grant Noel, you gotta leave both names intact as someone they couldn't beat.

maybe shorten Braxton Burmeister to BB ? That's a long name and I don't think we've had another QB with those initials?

Keeping the numbers helps with that.

So like BB3

Well, we definitely don't need the Braxton part.

That was relatively stress free, from beginning to end. PTSD had me thinking we were gonna do the thing when UVA got it to within 11, but we kept rolling. Pop looked good, D looked good. I'm happy with yesterday's results, fam.

D looked good except their 3rd quarter implosion, but the D finished strong and we hammered 'em. GO HOKIES! (why did autocorrect think that should have been homies?)

FAM!

Yknow, these unis really are fire

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

I have to say I'm coming away from the Duke and UVa games impressed with the way Pop plays. You usually expect a 3rd stringer to be a complete work in progress, and he probably is, but even though he overthrows on deep routes, he throws a very catchable ball. When he needs to put a little mustard on a pass, it's right on the numbers, and he leads receivers on deep routes which creates separation to get more YAC. And on top of that, he apparently has a knack for making something out of nothing when a play breaks down.

I love the toddler energy back there where it's just barely controlled chaos, it somehow works. I would not be shocked if he's solidified himself as QB1 going forward after games like this, he at least deserves a fair chance in the spring to claim it.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

His pocket awareness is the best I've ever seen from any Virginia Tech quarterback. I know it's a small sample size but he seems to have a knack for moving to the right spot, and making quick run vs. throw-it-away decisions.

I used to be with it, but then they changed what it was. Now what I'm with isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me.

Yeah that's what I was most impressed by his awareness and pocket presence. Drones has gotten happy feet a lot this season. Seemed like our tackles were being beat like a drum on obvious passing situations last night and Pop stood in there and made great decisions

(add if applicable) /s

I mean every time UVa blitzed, he hung tough, bought an extra half second and either found an open guy or threw the ball 15 yards OB. He showed the pocket presence of a seasoned veteran.

I'm excited for the future if he's able to get legit 1st team reps going into next year. His ability to turn a broken play into a gain reminds me a lot of Tyrod. We'd do very well to give him whatever he wants in NIL this summer.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

reminds me a lot of Tyrod

It's funny - I was watching Pop and thought he reminded me of McSorely.

Given the PSU offenses he was a part of, and the QBs he's recruited post-drones (Pop, Davi, etc) it makes me think Bowen's prototypical qb is a shifty dual threat rather than a battering-ram dual threat.

I thought the same, they wanted McSorely again and he looks the part.

Great comparison there. Pop also has some serious acceleration and speed.

I liked his shiftiness, but he had a couple spin moves 1 yard short of the 1st down marker, where you'd like to just see him dive for it. Ya just hope he doesn't spin into the next Kam Chancellor that decommitted a year prior.

"Thatโ€™s a stupid question. Next question."
-Corey Moore

Bingo. A serious misunderstanding of the placement of the 1st down marker and sideline.
This is one of the big mistakes he makes. A couple times vs Duke and a couple times vs UVA .

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Not sure about that. It's been a long time, but I want to say MV7 was also incredibly good that way. He'd see something and be GONE (whether it was someone coming after him or an opening he could exploit).

SSS, but Pop is him.

FAM!

FAM, my biggest concern is that a 6-6 season with a Sham-Wow Bowl victory over South Alabama will be enough for Pry to justify not making any changes

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Well, I'd guess that kind of change would be after our bowl game, so let's wait until then to worry about any change that would or wouldn't be made. But I do really hope we get a new DC (also included is LBs since Marve was responsible for that), and possibly both line coaches.
