Hokies ranked at #28 in ESPN Analytics Article

Article Here

They give the Hokies a 12.5% Chance to make the Playoffs. They point out critical games are the two against SEC opponents. The 28th ranking puts the Hokies 4th in the ACC with Clemson at 7, Miami at 8 and SMU at 17.

Creates a dichotomy between the media vote of 11th in ACC compared to this evaluation.

There's so much variation year to year in CFB with transfers and constant coaching changes, who the hell knows what's going to happen. Outside of a dozen or so teams that are always good, it feels like a crapshoot to me.

This is an oxymoron!

okay okay I actually read the piece. I mean, this is basically saying VT has a 12% chance of being a top 10 team. If you figure that there is a normal distribution of potential outcomes, with the median being 6ish wins for this team... then sure, a 12% chance of winning 10ish regular season games sounds about right.

Mama Giraffe will just never go away! ESPN got rid of a lot of their top personalities and somehow she keeps falling upward there.

I miss the ACCylum

Say what you will, but the ACC needs all the help it can get.

By god, that's Mama Giraffe's music

"Hokie religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side, kid." Han Solo

But is it really Neck if no one yells "Suck that tiger dick, bitch" at the end?

I haven't thought about Mama Giraffe in ages and ages. Wow

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

Hang the banner!!!

The investment in sport journalism is paying off because this has to be done by some orange and maroon glasses wearing madlad to do this

I hate to think this way, because I want so badly to have hope.

Can we short the playoff percentage?

Warning- Filter lost.

"Look at this... This is just spectacular.... These people are losing their minds"

Espn is on Crack if they think we are the 28th ranked team

We're not the 28th best team. We're the team with the 28th best chance of making the playoff.

All they're doing is:

  1. Assigning a win percentage to each FBS game played this season
  2. Running through each of those possible outcomes for the season
  3. Seeing how many times Team X makes the playoff in each possible outcome

For context, there's only 6 teams with a >50% chance of making the playoff, an additional 9 teams that have a >25% chance, and another 15 teams that have >10% chance, then another 100 or so teams.

The takeaway here shouldn't be "oh, VT is going to be good" - the take away is that there's <20 good teams, then there's 110+ teams that are pretty similar. VT is a lot closer those to the 110+ than the 20-.

Is anyone surprised that there are fewer than 20 good teams? Because that's where all this nonsense has always been headed

Onward and upward

Because that's where all this nonsense has always been headed

I'm surprised it's that high; I bet five years ago it would've been less than five teams with a greater than 50% chance of finishing in the top 12.

The rise of the power 2 conferences has increased parody at the top of the sport while eliminating the middle class. No one likes to talk about the first half of that statement because it doesn't fit the narrative.

The power 2 have absolutely increased parody at the top.

There are very few years that teams ranked 21-25 would win more than 1 out of 10 games against the top 5 teams. Those are normal 10 win G5 schools or 8 win SEC schools just to complete a bracket
