Men's squad is #8 in the country and their goalie, Sam Joseph, was the ACC Defensive Player of the Week last week. Their next game is Friday at 7pm against the BooHoos.
Women's team is now 4-1-1 and ranked 20th. They play next at ODU at 6pm on ESPN+ Thursday and then Sunday at 7pm at home on ACCNX against William and Mary.

Wouldn't it be fun if after all the angst (rightfully so) about football, we won a national championship in soccer?
Yep, 'twould be a hoot. I would then be forced to learn all the rules and try to get excited about ties and one score games. I do keep up with how both teams are doing, but still not interested in the game unless it's on tv and against someone I dislike. Who knows, they might bring me around yet.
I tried to give soccer a chance in March of 2024 when I attended my first Charlotte FC match. There were 3 or 4 moments of real action, and several ticky tacky calls by the officials. So overall it was boring, annoying, and the whole "stoppage time" thing where they tack on about how much time ran off the clock during stoppages during the 90 minute game is infuriating to someone like me.
But if we were to ever win a natty in soccer, I'm telling every SEC fan I meet that we have a natty in football.
this right here was your first mistake - MLS is NOT the way to get into watching soccer. MLS is awful - watch european soccer - Bundesliga, EPL, La Liga, Ligue 1 - all of those will give you a far better experience than any MLS match ever could
I actually think that a lot of Americans really don't like soccer because they watch American soccer. It's kind of like saying I don't like football because I watched a peewee game and the kids just looked like they were running around confused the whole time.
You are probably correct. I think the two biggest things that turn americans off of the sport is the running clock with inaccurate stoppage time, and the field is so big that it reduces the amount of action in the game overall. I really like watching some "soccer style" sports that I've never come close to playing. Lacrosse, handball, even indoor soccer is fun to watch.
add an equivalent to the backcourt violation in basketball (don't reward bad offense) and an equivalent to hockey's blue line (don't reward bad defense), and you have a sport I could get into.
Totally agree. I've never played soccer myself(other than gym class or kicking ball around for fun) but watching the British Premier League teams(even the bottom 3-5) is a lot of fun. Since they tweaked the rules to prevent total stalls and discourage the 'four corners' type play once you're up a goal, it got a lot more interesting. And I LIKE the stoppage time 'vagueness'-helps prevent stall tactics (like ones in American football where they do four kneel downs as clock runs out). Conversely, I hate watching NCAA games where the clock 'counts down' like it does in most other sports like football and basketball.
I like that there are extremely limited subs, I like that you can end up playing with ten (or even in rare cases 9 ) men if you get red cards.
I like that a goalie has to cover 192 sq feet of goal area(8 ft by 24 ft)-until you've stood in the goal and seen first hand how much space that is, you can't really appreciate the difficulty in doing so.
Plus the average player runs a total of 5-10 miles during a game and that between the various leagues, the BPL teams play 50-70 games a year. I love that for the BPL every team plays every other team twice - home and home). No 'playoff'-just do it(show it) on the field-no 'beauty contest polls'
MLS is not nearly as much fun to watch in my opinion
Don't watch US club soccer, it is not good, high-skilled soccer.
The only good US soccer is the USWNT.
What about the women's USL Super League?
I think soccer is a bit like golf in this way - both sports are boring as hell to watch if you've never played before or don't fully understand what's going on. Both sports are much more interesting to watch if you've played and have an appreciation for what is happening in front of you. I played a lot of soccer growing up (still do play some now) but didn't get into golf until my senior year of college. I remember going to a friend's house growing up and his dad always had golf on the TV and it was THE MOST BORING thing in my world at the time. Now, after playing golf, I have a different level of appreciation for the sport and I enjoy watching it.
I also really enjoy watching soccer - the 1-0-score games may seem boring to some folks and some styles of play can be slow and uninteresting (looking at you Italy ca. 2006) but the closer games are actually really fascinating - a team can be dominant for most of the game and then make a blunder that their opponent capitalizes on and lose the game. The whole complexion of a game can change in an instant. 1-0 in the 70th minute can be really exciting
I've played golf. I have never played soccer. I enjoy watching soccer. I'd rather watch grass grow than watch golf.
Perfect! The exception that proves the rule
Uh huh.
Didn't see the match at all, but looks like a tie 2-2 tonight for the Hokies.
Side rant: very disappointed with our athletics department. Went to HokieSports this evening to find info about the match, current score, etc. Absolutely nothing on the homepage about the matchup against our in-state rivals when we are ranked #8!! Then, later I came back to check the final score, found the screenshot linked here via Gdrive. Notice the match start and end times. Absolute amateurville. Do they need me to donate more to athletics so that we can get the timezone corrected?
Another late goal allowed to move a win to a tie. Allowed UVA to score in 79th minute.
Women lost 2-1 to ODU on the road and will drop out of the rankings most likely
Women tied William and Mary 3-3. Blew a 3-1 lead in final 20 minutes, giving up tying goal in 88th minute.
Men's dropped to #14 for their match against Furman, which unfortunately also ended in a draw. Next up, Boston College @ home on Sunday at 6pm. Hope they can bring an end to this draw streak and get a W.
Unfortunately no luck. VT men's dropped the match to Boston College 0-1. Next they travel to Standford for a match on 9/21 at 10 PM Eastern.
Women's soccer have dropped their last two to #19 UNC (1-2) and Louisville (0-1). They next head to WF on 9/18 for a 7 PM match.
Issue the last two games for the men has been putting the ball away. So many chances, we just cannot find the back of the net. It's frustrating, but fixable.
