if he's such a good coach, why was he unemployed heading into the season?
This is my thoughts as well, but no one has any insight except that he has red hair. He resigned from Boise State on August 7th for no publicized reason. I found exactly one comment that said his recruiting will be missed and a host of others speculating that he resigned due to some sort of wrongdoing. So who knows.

No chance. Wofford domino didn't fall until beginning of September unless the word was out they were firing the coach far in advance.
Well, the whole issue looks like they were looking for an excuse to fire him.
