Cameron Phillips Commits to Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech Hokies football, basketball, athletics blog and forum featuring: unique columns, breaking news, film studies, in-depth analysis, recruiting, videos and jokes.

Wide Receiver Cameron Phillips of Hyattsville, MD (DeMatha Catholic) has given a verbal pledge to the Hokies according to Rivals.com.

Phillips is rated as a 3-star prospect by Rivals.com, and as a 4-star player by 247Sports. Phillips is 6-1, 170 and held offers from Rutgers, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Virginia among others. At this time, 247Sports Crystal Ball had 62% of voters picking Phillips to Virginia, so it seems as if the Hokies beat the Hoos for his services. Phillips camped in Blacksburg at Tech's one-day camp in July.

This is a huge get because wide receiver is a position of need in the 2014 class. While Tech is still in the race for 4-star Noah Brown, former target Austin Proehl went off the Hokies board when he committed to UNC earlier this week. Furthermore, DeMatha Catholic is a hotbed for talent in Maryland, and it may position the program well for other players down the road.

Welcome to HokieNation Cameron!

I like it, doesn't hurt to get a 4 star from out-of-state!

A pipeline with DeMatha would be sweet as well, since they typically pump out some good recruits.

Didn't a DeMatha coach recently say that 'the pipeline to VT was over', or something to that effect?

Yeah. Was when Billy Hite "retired" from his coaching position (he went HS at Damatha). Funny, I don't think he was ever that influential getting recruits from there.

We put the K in Kwality

I like the subtle dig at Rutgers.

Great pickup. Did you notice he blocks downfield? Hooray! Welcome to Hokie Nation, Cameron!

"Exit light..."

Kid appears to be a good "hands" catcher. High points the ball. For a high school player he's running pretty clean routes. Def very excited about the get for our future. Let's hope moorehead's coaching matches his intensity if so we can have some high high level pass catchers on our hands

With Coles leaving after this season, do you think Phillips has a shot to see the field next year? or will he redshirt?

Also, I hope this doesn't force Noah Brown to choose OSU

Either way, as Phil Roberson would say, I'm Happy Happy Happy!

I think he redshirts unless he enrolls early. By next year Caleb and Stanford should be the top 2 and knowles and meyer will be rotating in regularly. With other older guys on the roster to be the #5 and beyond, I don't think they will burn a year of his eligibility. That said if he turns out to be an absolute freak then who knows

all maroon everything

Don't forget Mark Irick.

I am hearing Noah Brown is a heavy lean to OSU at this point. This is huge for the Hokies, especially after losing Proehl!

Huzzah!

VT always needs a "Cam" on its roster!

Any naysayer that doesn't think this is the revolution for Virginia Tech is insane.

We've got a young, fiery coaching staff. A leader who isn't just a figure head. And now we are picking up quality offensive recruits that aren't just behind center.

Bigger, Faster, STRONGER...BUILT TO HIT

Most importantly, we get quality offensive recruits that ARE the center. And around him. I love Jeff Grimes.

Finally was able to watch the video and saw some footage of him playing my highschool. I can now put a name to the player that kept torching our secondary. Glad I can root for him now!

i know the feeling. i went to paul vi. where did you go?

VT CEE Class of 2016/2017

5 years, 2 degrees, 33 football games as a student, and 2 Cassell court stormings later, I bleed Maroon and Orange

I went to Loyola Blakefield in Towson, MD

His coach at DeMatha is Elijah Brooks, former W&M star. I trust anyone who learned from a W&M grad.

of course you do.

Meanwhile, Lee Suggs is coaching at my alma mater's rival. Buncha cape-wearin weirdos.

Mary had a little lamb, its fleece electrostatic. Everywhere that Mary went, the lights became erratic.

He has already stated he is going to be another commit who is going to recruit for us. This is an awesome pickup

Glorious news. Well done coach moorehead

Great hands: check. Feisty attitude on field: check. Finishes routes: check. However, what I like most about his clip are the plays highlighting his intensity to block--specifically keeping his hands and body on the opposing player. This kid is light years away from most junior high schoolers. Great grab coach M.

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

This guy was a lock for uva just a few weeks ago. Then, he visited VT and the bromance with Moorehead deepened.

Big loss for uva, big win for VT.

Wow...impressive vid. He is very impressive all the way around with great size.
