Mid-season review/2nd half preview

Based off everything, how do you think Tech's first half of the season has gone? Also, how do you think the Hokies will fare the 2nd half in terms of win/loss predictions?

This team has shown that it can finish the reg season 11-1. I worry about the consistency however. The offense has improved, but in the past two games they seem to somewhat disappear in the second half. Can't have that kind of inconsistency if we want to have an outstanding season going forward. But if that gets fixed, I see no reason why we shouldn't finish 11-1

They'll really get after ya

I would say that the team we would face in the acccg would be a reason. Not sure if we could slug it out against FSU or Clemlsun.

Erm, ACCCG is technically post-season, so we'd be 11-1 before it if we perfect the rest of our regular season.

I think I'd have to wait and see on this. It's no secret that Clemson swoons nearer to the end of the season, so if they beat FSU and we continue to improve on the offensive side of the ball, I think it could be 'closer than the experts think'. FSU, however, seems to rarely pass up the opportunity to play well in an ACCCG, even if they're not all that good during the year. I honestly think FSU is more dangerous, as Boyd is a known commodity and Winston is setting the world on fire. I think Winston is harder to defend, so if we play Clemson at the end of the year, I think it is a toss up. I am less confident if we play against FSU.

Pitt will be a struggle because it always is. Maryland looked dangerous 63 points ago, but now I don't know what to make of them.

BC and Duke should be victories.

Miami is going to be a tough out.

LOLUVA.

I'm going with somewhere between 5-1 with a loss to Miami and 3-3 if we drop the ball against MD and Pitt. I could see us, realistically, anywhere between 11 wins (if we were to go 6-0, a stretch I think at this point) and 8-4 if the offense hits a wall and defense suffers any significant injuries.

I'm with you almost 100%

but I think BC is a trap game. They're a physical team and they always play us pretty tough. Not to mention they have a stud of a running back. That's not to say that our defense can't handle him, but if we don't give him his due respect he could cause some problems.

My hope: That we take BC seriously and get a good sense of how to stop an explosive RB. It might take a quarter and some change to get accustomed to him, but it will help us prepare for Duke Johnson.

We take that experience down to Miami and force Morris into some poor decisions and take advantage of at least an interception. BUT that's way out there..

for now...

That Yeldon guy would have something to say about how the defense can do with stopping an explosive RB. Take Yeldon 10x over what BC has.

I dream of being 8-1 heading into the Miami game, with all of the announcers still droning on and on about the U being back after their huge win over FSU.

Fortune Favors the Bold

YES! I totally didn't realize that they played FSU the week before us. It's hard to get up for two big, emotional games in a row and I can see Miami putting all their eggs into the FSU basket. If they win that game they might show up flat against us.

and if they lose it's insurance for us

How so? Miami losing to FSU doesn't really help us unless they drop another game somewhere, which seems unlikely unless UNC plays them tough somehow

loluva has an uncanny ability to beat miami when nobody expects it.....and since I don't realistically see uva winning more than 4 games this season..it would be pretty hilarious if they beat miami

Onward and upward

I'd rather have Miami win because it could lead to a hangover effect against us. I think it will be easier for Miami to get back up for our game if they aren't basking in the glory of a Florida state championship (UF, USF, FSU) until the next Thursday. Plus, the farther FSU is from the ACCCG, the better our chances of winning the conference (see my note above about wanting to play Clemson instead of FSU in the ACCCG)

"unless they drop another game somewhere".... Umm yeah that's exactly how so

Cheering for da U makes me nauseous.

Or, if they lose the game, they might fall apart after the big let down of losing....

Hate to be that guy but: All I care about is beating Pitt.

After the gut punch season last year, I refuse to take any game for granted. I'm going to appreciate every single victory to it's fullest. I refuse to look ahead, to look at standings, to look at polls. The next opponent is all I care about.

Amen, Preachit!!!

I'm looking at the improvements on offense as the difference the rest of the way. I'm fearful of a game where we fumble and throw some picks while not running the ball we face a team that locks down our passing game..Maimi comes to mind with all the talent on offense and defense..I see one more loss but hopefully it's not to Maimi.

First I want to get by Pitt. Either by 1 in 5 overtimes, or by 45 by half. Just beat them.
BC concerns me because they have a way of either playing us tight or bringing us to their level.
Murland never concerned me. And they still don't.
Duke and LOLUVa, well, speaks for itself.
Miami is always a tough fought game.

If we get by Pitt, I would say Miami is the only hurdle.

5-1 puts us potentially in the ACCCG, and with 10 wins. Nice season!
6-0 puts us squarely in the ACCCG, with a chance to play spoiler for either Clemson or F$U for their title run if they are undefeated, and in the top 10 WITH a loss to Bama. If Bama stays #1, we get a little more credit and a BCS game to send off the system.

We need to take every game seriously this year.
Pitt (Lost last four) They are an offensive Juggernaut one week and defensive the next (vs lolUVA).

Duke. Plays us hard every year. Don't forget they put up 55 on that Pitt team and only lost due to four turnovers.

BC. Plays hard every year, they only have two real weapons (RB and Amidon) but despite everybody knowing that they get big yards every game!

Miami. Who knows they might actually be "bak." But they have also played a lot of bad teams.

Maryland. By the time this game comes around, we will know if we actually have anything to fear.

UVA. Take this game seriously, this will be the Hoo's bowl game this year. (like it should be every year.)

Wait... their offense committed 4 turnovers AND STILL SCORED 55????

I love this football team. I will root for them no matter what and although they have not (yet) exceeded the expectations I had for them this year, their game playing as a complete package has impressed me to no end. I think the OC and the rest of the new coaches are doing a fine job with what they have to work with and the amount of time they have had to work with the players. Every time Logan Thomas completes another pass I just feel like yelling 'take that haters'! The games I have managed to watch (being up here in B1G country) I see them playing with drive and determination that I have not seen for many a year.
Having said all that I still get apprehensive every time we start looking forward to the ACCCG, because we are not there yet and we need to take this season one game at a time.
Pitt....watching previous games always made me want to beat my head against the wall. They seem to always have our number.
Boston College....they had our number a couple of times and we need to watch out, they play above their level when it comes to VT.
Maryland...No clue which team will show up.
Miami....is Miami and they don't want VT to upstage them as the premier team in the conference so they will always play us tough.
Duke....If I remember right they put a scare into us a little while ago.
And strange things can happen in a rivalry game.

I guess I don't want to fall in the same trap I fell into the previous years and start believing that we are destined to win just because. Take this season one game at a time, keep improving every game, smash the football down their throat every single play and when we do get to the ACCCG we will know we played the meanest, nastiest, smash mouth football around and we by god earned our way there with no apologies.

6-5, 10-1-1, 2-9, 3-8, 6-4-1, 6-5, 5-6, 2-8-1, 9-3, 8-4, 10-2, 10-2, 7-5, 9-3, 11-1, 11-1, 8-4, 10-4, 8-5, 10-3, 11-2, 10-3, 11-3, 10-4, 10-3, 11-3, 11-3, 7-6, 8-5, 7-6, 7-6, 10-4, 9-4, 6-7, 8-5..........

"... play and when we do get to the ACCCG we will know we played the meanest, nastiest, smash mouth football around and we by god earned our way there with no apologies"

correct me if I'm wrong, but you just spent a lot of time saying that you don't expect us to be in the ACCCG and that we need to take one game at a time. (I completely agree with that sentiment)

but this last part contradicts everything you've said. "WHEN we DO get to the ACCCG"

implies that we are in fact going to get there....

just sayin'

As a fan of the Hokies and not an actual player: <-- Important element of this thread....

We have the defense to win every game left on our schedule. I think it comes down to Logan and the offense honestly. Our defense is the shit so we need the offense to just not suck and the special teams to not make costly mistakes, and we'll be good to go.

My only concern for the remainder of the season is miami (and somewhat our offense). I think we'll beat miami though, and probably struggle vs a sub par team but still win. I see us in Charlotte with a chance to knock the ACC out of the national championship. But again, I think we go how Logan and the offense goes.

As i said before this is a revenge year. We are going to one by one cast down revenge upon the ACC. UNC has been crossed off. PITT is next, then Miami, and finally Clemson. One at a time cross'em off!

@VTimHokie85

Don't forget revenge against UVA for what they've done to the fine name of Football.

It's not their fault. They think they're playing Lacrosse.

REVENGE!!!!!

Homer Simpson with bat while driving from episode "Revenge is a Dish Best Served Three Times.

I think the offense continues to improve and the defense plays like they have. I do think going to the Miami game 8-1 is very obtainable. Miami is a tough read when it comes to predicting who wins. Its a bit too early I think. The good news is that if we beat Miami, there is no reason we won't be in Charlotte.

"I'm too drunk to taste this chicken" - Colonel Sanders via Ricky Bobby

I know it should be a cakewalk after Miami, but there would be two reasons if we continue to win and end up beating Miami...Maryland and UVA would both be playing to be spoilers for us, and getting big heads makes that more likely.

I like the fighting attitude and the "We will win because we want to play to win" mentality that this year's Hokies are playing with. Having the "We will win because they shouldn't beat us" mentality leads to problems.

All we have to do is take every game seriously and not overlook anyone and then

If the offense continues to improve and stays healthy..we can win out. The Miami game is the tough one obviously but they get FSU the week before..that has to be an advantage for Virginia Tech. Clemson on offense isn't as explosive this year as in past seasons but their team as a whole is much more consistent. If it's FSU and we get to the ACCCG..that freshman hadn't met Mr. Foster. ;)

Touchdown Tech - Bill Roth

I think the biggest concern for the second half has to be the lack of production running the ball. If we can make improvements in the run game, this is a pretty darn good football team. The defense will continue to play at a high level, and you have to imagine Kendall and Fayscon will continue to improve. I could see this team winning out if they get the running game on track, but Miami is a tough opponent to go against with a 1-dimensional offense.
