David Teel hashes out the logic here: http://www.dailypress.com/sports/teel-blog/dp-teel-time-vt-bowl-latest-s.... In a nutshell, the Peach Bowl seems to covet Duke, and the Russell Athletic Bowl thinks picking in-state Miami will be better for ticket sales.
If it's the Sun Bowl, I don't think it will be very well attended by HokieNation. Thoughts?

He seems a weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee high on just how good the "Duke story is." Chik fil a picking Duke over Clemson...? I don't think so.
Clemson would be going to the Orange Bowl.
EDIT: Sorry, didn't get far enough into the article. I agree. Taking Duke over Clemson is crazy
I was hoping for Orlando.
I can get to FL.
Can't get to TX for that.
bowls are as hard to predict as the Heisman. Lets just wait til Sunday.
I see less fans than band members in our future if this comes to pass

Turkey leg given.
Reason: Best 2D Zelda game ever.
No. Best game ever period.
Original was best! They're all awesome, though. Let's not fight, ok?
I could see CFA taking Duke IF Duke can play a good game against FSU in the ACCCG.
If Duke gets blown out I dont think it happens. But if Duke can at least somewhat hang in there, then maybe.
I agree: the better Duke looks, the more chance they have of holding on to their spot
In this case I will be shamefully pulling for a blowout. I want for the Hokies to be in the CFA so bad. I would love to see this defense against Manziel.
our defense would struggle mightily with johnny football. We have had problems all year with dual threats.
He tears everybody up on the ground but I think he would struggle through the air against us. He throws a ton of picks.
Fascyon playing robber might be fun.
LSU took care of him, I think our defense could as well, given the time to prepare. Besides, many (including myself) feel that aTm is a natural rivalry for the Hokies.
Here's the issue I see (and its importance may not matter if Duke is competitive against FSU): Bowl games, especially recently, have been driven by the ability to sell tickets. It has helped us A LOT recently. Last time I checked, Duke hasn't exactly traveled well. Hell, when they played Bama last year they made concessions so more Bama fans could attend the game, park their RV's, etc. If I'm the Chick-Fil-A Bowl, I'm scared of inviting Duke unless the SEC opponent is a big draw and can ensure that the game sells out. I'm not even convinced aTm would be that team (USC-E would).
Potential last college game of Jonny Football and new years in ATL? That could be a strong draw regardless of opponent. Could see the hype of Miami as filler for that, or if they really want a draw and a better game by a team that beat Miami by double-digits; VT would be stronger draw than Duke.
I don't think they are stressing about selling tickets too much. http://www.marketwired.com/press-release/chick-fil-a-bowl-announces-sell...
The Sun Bowl to me would be a bummer. Not saying thats not what our season results deserve, but would just be a letdown. Specifically because El Paso blows.
I fly there about once a month for work, I could probably swing a free flight through work to go to the game, and I still would most likely not do it. Thats how much El Paso sucks. As the article mentions, I would hope Hokie Nation would not be booking travel thinking that its going to be a nice respite from winter weather. It is cold in that part of Texas on New Years.
Would be a good matchup against UCLA (or Pac 12 team we would normally never see), so from that standpoint I would enjoy it. But a decent TV matchup would not help our reputation in terms of selling tickets which is flagging a bit as of late.
El Paso sucks so bad, I, EPHokie (Yeah, El Paso Hokie), won't even be in El Paso for the Sun Bowl. Also, I really regret this name... and can't wait to get the hell out of here.
I like Sun Bowl because we are not currently traveling well in my opinion. The game that far away wouldn't show the fact that we are not currently traveling well due to the low expectations. Also UCLA is probably going to be a good matchup given how well they performed against USC last week and how they performed overall through the year. Peach bowl would obviously be great but I would be surprised to see that happen.
I kinda hope we do go to the Sun Bowl. It would be the only bowl game that I'll be able to attend, so if that's where we end up, I'll definitely be there.
I just don't like the idea of Miami getting chosen ahead of us. I don't see how they can claim it's for fan attendance either since they don't even show to home games.
I've never understood why the Music City Bowl isn't higher up on the ACC's bowl list - Nashville would be a really fun destination and I'd love to see us play there, much more than the Sun Bowl in El Paso. Plus, with the SEC tie-in you could have some fun with that. Too bad they're lower on the pecking order... can you imagine how fun VT-Texas A&M in Nashville could be?
1998 Music City Bowl was fantastic. The little brother had just come about, so the whole family went to Nashville (the parents needed babysitters for the kid while we went to the game).
We had a blast. I was just a kid, but I remember a lot about that trip.
I also remember Tech walloping Bama in the snow and rain. It was a good time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_Music_City_Bowl
So I agree. I would love to have a reason to go back to Nashville.
I just want to say, that I NEVER saw our Sugar Bowl vs Michigan coming. So, I await the invite with baited breath.
Hopefully, it turns out differently. My friends and I discovered this awesome beer bar in Atlanta back in August (The Porter Beer Bar). I was hoping for a reason visit again.
I think aTm-VT in Atlanta would be one of the highlights of the bowl season if they wanted to make it happen.
We have a really plausible shot at the Peach bowl, if Clemson goes to the Orange Bowl. That is pretty likely since they'll be in the Top-14 and ACC ties. Then it's between Duke, VT, and Miami for the Peach Bowl. Duke isn't a big football school so the committees would probably enact the within 1 conference win rule which would set up Miami or VT. I think we travel a bit better than Miami and if it's a decent SEC team we would get the Mid-Atlantic ratings that Miami probably can't since an SEC team would already get the Florida viewers.
But either way I'll probably be there. El Paso is an 8 hour drive or a fairly "cheap" flight from DFW. My uncle lives in Orlando so it'll be a nice visit. And a friend who wants to go has a sister that lives in Atlanta. ATL requires the least amount of finagling since it would make a nice 3 day trip from Richmond, so fingers crossed.
CFA Bowl gets the SEC #5 pick, which usually means #6 after the BCS gets done. If we rank the teams by conference record, 5/6 puts us in the 5-3 range of Georgia and LSU. I'm not sure if the SEC has the same "one game" rule that the ACC has, but if they do, A&M and Vandy are both in play at 4-4. If the bowls above CFA reach down, USCe might also be in play (although the Outback Bowl probably won't mind having Clowney back again after last year's big play).
We also have to look at the potential opponents to look at the chances of each ACC team. If CFA chooses Georgia, they may not be worried about Duke or Miami's turnout, because UGA fans will turn out.
Duke/Vandy might be an interesting matchup, but not in a bowl of this caliber.
I just want it closer! Oh well, at least we're in a bowl.
But sending Miami to a bowl in state for ticket sales... Hahaha I guess the smoke blocks their vision of the seats, no one goes....
I guess I'm the only one who wants the Sun Bowl, oh well. I think it's a great, interesting, fun, and different match-up in UCLA. I'm of the opinion that's the point of bowls. It's also a good TV draw.
I don't know why, but I got the impression "ticket sales/ travelling fan base" doesn't really matter anymore. Schools have to guarantee to buy a bunch of tickets anyway. Like all of CFB now, it's all about the TV.
Peach would be nice, but it seems like a reach, it also seems like aTm would curb-stomp us...especially their D vs. our O. Another Tangerine bowl against a Big East Also-Ran? It was so much fun last year, who wouldn't want to do that again? Pass.
All my math turns up Sun.
Texas A&M has one of the worst defenses in the country, even worse then Tech's offense.
I was about to say... taken a look at the aTm defense recently? All-SEC it ain't.
That's good to know, I guess I just kind of assumed. I would be fine with the peach - but I would absolutely prefer the Sun to the Russell. But I'm also not going either way. I can see where people who are going would prefer Orlando.
I wanted to go to the bowl game this year but I guess I'll have to wait until next year. The Sun Bowl sounds good to me. It's against a good opponent and I can watch in warmth with all the food I want.
