Ehh, they are happy with their non-revenue success, we're happy with our football program. I think we'd both be happier with more of what the other has, but right now, we're both happy with what our athletic programs produce.

Hey, I'm pretty happy with our non-revenue sports lately too. Women's soccer final 4, baseball in ACC finals and almost reaching the CWS, wrestling consistently being the best ACC program the last few years, softball and men's soccer having their runs a few years back, and even the swim team beat UVA this year. I'll take it.
It's really only basketball that's painful right now.

It's cool that you're trying to be all Kumbaya here, but I don't agree with you on this. I think that the lax bros and the rowers are happy with their own success, but I believe the student body in general HATES that the Hokie American style footballers have been bitch-slapping their team for ten years straight.
Football is king. Mike London makes 20x more than the Lacrosse coach. Applications for admission skyrocket for all schools when the football team is winning. Non-revenue sports for UVA, are nothing more than sour grapes.

Nah, they really support their other sports. It's real. Oliver, in particular, is lauded for all of his coaching hires and facility upgrades.....He's done great with everyone but London.
What shocks me is that they really don't care about football. In the phases of grief, or whatever, they are past they "wishing we were good at football" stage. There is no discussion about football here, even in the middle of the season. Ever. And that's why they're screwed, they don't even care enough to be mad anymore.
It's not dissimilar to VT and hoops, and is an interesting case study on the effect of keeping a lame duck coach past his due. I shudder to think of the disinterest VT hoops will garner next year if JJ isn't let go. That's what uva football has to look forward to in the 2014 season.
uva does not wish they were VT. They don't. They would love to be Texas or Florida. They would love to be relevant at football and keep their non-rev's success. And VT does not wish to be uva. We would not swap our football success for their sustained non-rev success (they will be preseason #1 in baseball). We'd like to be better at non-rev's, and we're showing some growth there, but we wouldn't swap the 2nd longest bowl streak for a few non-rev National Championships.
Both schools are happy with what they are but they'd like more success in their deficiencies.

I have some soccer and swimming trophies from when I used to pick flowers and not drown in the pool. Does this mean I can put those on a poster and bring it to Tech basketball games?

The fact they resort to this just means they got absolutely nothing to trash us about in the sports that matter. I mean, sure, you can bash our basketball team, but nothing they are going to say will come close to how bad WE think the situation is.
That being said, one thing I hope Babcock does is put an emphasis on getting that first team natty title, regardless of the sport. As a university its quite embarrassing to have existed this long and to not have ever climbed to the top of the mountain in any team sport at any time in the 144 year history of the school.
