247 Article: Recognizing the champions
So they're going to go from being 2x National Champions to 9x National Champions overnight because, as they say, "everyone else is doing it".
Maybe we should go the route of the SEC and just start claiming National Titles in football for seasons where we finished with a good record. Didn't we finish undefeated a few times in the Southern Conference? Well... Looks like we won it all a couple times!

source? I thought this was a parody, but when I clicked, you sound so serious.
I updated the original post with the link
And yes, its serious
It was a free article on 247. They said that the AD is considering adding up to 7. There are some they believe they are more qualified to claim than others, but their argument is that they were number 1 in at least 1 poll so therefore, they were National Champions.
My favorite parts are the "recognized by *insert name here*"
Now, I don't really know anything about the old championship selectors, and I'm sure they're at least somewhat legitimate, but it's really amusing to see it and claim ignorance.
Auburn, recognized national champions by John Smith, 35 year old Alabama resident. Hang a banner!
At least some of their fans are honest/realistic.
VT ranks #1 on the annual vtfly poll. We now have 15 National Championships (the poll didn't start until 1999).
The rockidr4 report recently came in. VT HAS WON EVERY SINGLE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SINCE 1872 IN EVERY SINGLE SPORT.
Blake and I talked it over and we both agree that the Sam Rogers Trophy signifying National Champions belongs to Tech every year.
We finished the regular season in 2007 #1 in the computers
Thats at least 1 banner
Does it conveniently come with a trophy as well? We have an empty case is all I'm sayin...
This article and the AU people commenting on it sound SO butthurt. Seems like a sad attempt to keep up with Bama in recruiting. I don't really understand why anyone acknowledges (or put so much emphasis on) pre-1960's championships in most sports anyway (looking at you Yankees fans).
Bama has been claiming extra National Championships for years but never get called on it.
Every time Bama claims another national title, Nick Saban shrinks an inch. It's part of his deal with the devil.
Definitely. Still trying to keep up with them. Can't really say anything about the last three by Bama though.
Don't worry guys. We would've beat Ohio State in 07 so that year gets the official lizardking national championship approval.
AWESOME. I went to a National Championship Game in 2004!

Edit: Technically the game was in 2005, but the 2004-05 season...
ha! so did I! My two older brothers are Auburn grads and declined to go to the game ... I won't speculate on why but it's a shame they missed a National Championship game!
To be fair, they probably deserved that one.
I mean, I was a self-proclaimed All American in Football in High School... couldve played anywhere I wanted but chose not to and stick to academics at VT....
Usually the claim "major selectors" but it is rather amazing that even in the BCS era there have only been 7 or 8 consensus picks. Even last year ... someone selected ND over Alabama. Everybody has an opinion. And apparently by the national championship recruiting logic every recruit should try to go to Princeton or Yale because they have the most by far.
We went undefeated in 1918. Hang that banner!
Ah ha! I know the source for that.
Bass Fishing National Champs, where's the banner?
Technically we went undefeated in the year 1999. The Sugar Bowl loss vs FSU wasn't until Jan 4th, 2000. QUICK CLAIM IT!
Yeah, also hadn't fsu committed a number of NCAA infractions? Technically they have to forfeit said trophy and MNC title to us.
We certainly won the title of "only team in the BCS title game that year to not put a convicted criminal (Warrick) on the field."
Side note - does anyone know if the NCAA punished him or FSU in any way? I know he pled guilty to the theft charges, but maybe he had to repay the store or something? The details escape me. In any case, it would have been a bigger penalty nowadays, it seems.
Bama claims 15 football national championships. They have not won 15 national championship games. They didn't even finish some of those seasons with the best record or play in a bowl game. Several committees went back and decided retroactively who should have been national champs.
These SEC teams are getting really annoying with this!
I've been waiting for this news to hit TKP. Interested to see how people take it. Auburn grad curious to see how an un-biased (mostly) readership reacts to it.
On one hand, yes, lots of people claim ridiculous NC's from dumb years (aTm, Bama, Ole Miss, Minnesota, Bama, ND, USC, etc...) and it's nice to see the NC number that Auburn claims line up with other top-tier football programs.
On the other hand, can't our 2 BCS NCG appearance speak for themselves? Plus the 2004 vacated one? PLUS being the only SEC team to win 3 SEC Championships in the BCS era? Success in the last 20 years outweighs a lot of stuff that happened earlier in terms of recruiting, especially the pre-1960's stuff.
TL;DR: As an Auburn grad, I see why they did it, but trying to say it was for recruiting or whatever (which is something I saw Jay Jacobs argue IIRC), is crazy. This is to satisfy all the old geezers who care so much about keeping up with ridiculously reported NC numbers in the SEC (Ole Miss, Bama, aTm all claim more than 2 NC's). Oh well. Now Auburn is just as dumb as the rest of the country when claiming NC's.
I've won many, many national championships and Heismans with the Hokies. I think we should claim those
I'm sure they'll be following UNC's lead and ordering championship rings.
