Forward Shane Henry is Buzz Williams Latest Basketball Commitment

Buzz Williams scores again on the recruiting trail.

Shane Henry, Tech's Newest Hardwood Hokie [GPC The Chronicle]

Henry last balled at Georgia Perimeter College (a JuCo). GPC's roster lists the sophomore forward's vitals at 6-8, 180 pounds. GPC published a "Success Story" profile on Henry which provides background information on his basketball career. In that piece, GPC head coach Alfred Barney said, "Shane does a great job bringing leadership to the team." He continued, "He's a leader on and off the court. He gets the players where they're supposed to be."

This past season Henry averaged 13.2 points, 12.5 rebounds and 4.7 blocks per game. As a freshman, Shane earned an all-conference honorable mention, and was named to the five-man all-freshman team. Henry led the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) in field goal percentage (58.6 percent, 119 of 203). He was also GPC's second leading score scorer (9.4 points per game).

Synapsis?

That's a great get after the loss of Marshall Wood. Shane should be able to help the team instantly. Welcome to the Hokie nation Shane.

I love it! It fills a big need, hoping maybe one more signing.

6'8" = big

It figures this announcement comes out right after I headed in to the Hokie Club Chalk Talk with Bud Foster and Charley Wiles. It was a great event by the way and they also announced that in August, Whit will be coming to a similar event up here so clear your schedules for that.

This is the most important pickup Buzz has had in my opinion. Long term will Hill be a better player for Tech, most likely but Henry comes in ready to play a variety of roles with a college ready body. He is an upgrade over Wood and possibly even JVZ when it comes to post play. He was fifth in JUCO in rebounding and second in blocks per game. He is a defensive upgrade over all of our post players from last year and has a motor that doesnt stop which is huge for the way Buzz wants the game played. The numbers that he posted, he did that averaging only 21 minutes per game. With Tech this season, I could see him getting about 27-28 mpg.

Offensively, Joe summed it up pretty well. The big key there is his shot selection compared to our current players. Shooting 58% doesnt happen by luck. You have to be able to get yourself in the spots that you are confident on scoring while creating the space to take those shots. His rebounding ability also played a large role in getting second chance points on easy put backs. He averaged almost 5 offensive rebounds per game last season. His shooting range is fairly deep, considering he averaged over 43% from behind the arc, although he rarely took that shot, averaging only about 1 attempt every other game. One area that I hope he focuses on is his free throw shooting, which was 60.9% last year, which could be costly for Tech, especially in the ACC schedule where many of our games are decided by just a few possessions.

I was waiting for your usual awesome comments! Thanks for the insight!

Nice summary and info, thanks. What an outstanding pick up where we needed it most, and to close the recruiting class on such a high note. I wish next season was starting tomorrow.

27-28 mpg? Not exactly prius numbers...

FYI, according to Mike Barber, he is eligible to play immediately and has two seasons remaining.

Georgia Perimeter, seems like a good name for a basketball school.

its almost silly to consider the talent discrepancy that we're going to see between last year and this upcoming season. I can't recall a roster ever being overhauled like THIS for any school in the past. Unbelievable work by Buzz & Co over the past couple months.

Wow...I just watched his video. This guy is even more athletic than I thought he would be. He has serious vertical. check out his block at the 19 second mark of the video at the top of the thread. I would have to say he is more athletic than any of the current Hokie bigs....

I am feeling really good about this signing...

Just to clarify...When I said this "This guy is even more athletic than I thought he would be.", I was talking about Van Damme and his dancing....

β€œThese people are losing their minds. This is beautiful.”

His shot-blocking ability should help fill the shoes of Thompson, who was actually our second best shot blocker behind JVZ. VT was actually 5th in the ACC in blocks/game, which was easily one our best areas. JVZ and Henry should be a lethal shot-blocking combo going forward.

We need to get him on the Hokie food plan quickly. Are those measurements correct? 6'8" 180"? Marshall Wood was 6'8" and 230, CJ 6'8" 235 and Raines 6'9" 238 - he needs to put some weight on.

Just answered my own concern....
JUCO Transfers
Shane Henry: 6'8, 215 lbs, Power Forward

Bristolhokie

According to Mark Berman he is quoted to be 6'6 and 193 lbs. Very surprised on height.

He needs to eat whatever Bucky Hodges is eating...

VHokie

Berman is also 3' tall so I wouldn't listen to him.

Regardless of height, Berman shouldn't be listened to on any topic, except how to show open disdain for the team you are covering, how to be an unlikeable prick, or how to broadcast your Napolean Complex to everyone around you.

"Nope, launch him into the sun and fart on him on the way up"
-gobble gobble chumps

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

IMO Berman has written some of the laziest effort articles I've ever seen by any writer of a major newspaper.

There's no way he's only 6'6. Berman strikes once again.

Honestly not that surprised. He doesn't look 6'8" in the film to me.
Who knows tho.

Whoa, didn't know all that about Berman. :-)
