Per Sportscenter: Giants shutting down David Wilson

This is terrible news. I wasn't the biggest David Wilson fan in terms of his on the field play, but you never questioned his effort and by all accounts is a wonderful human being to be around. If this is true and he can no longer play football, I certainly hope he finds great success in other avenues of life. He has been and will continue to be a terrific ambassador for Virginia Tech.

You know I wish all the DW injury updates would get taken down. What's the point of having them up? It only makes us angrier and more depressed.
Fuck
I need a damn drink.

The point is, we support our Hokies, good news or bad. We share in their triumphs and hardships. * It's what makes us a community.

Keep your head up, DW! You are a class act, a great football player regardless of where your career ends up, and most importantly, a terrific human being.

* Unless they are unrepentant cock-ups.

Yeah but it just seems it could've been posted at a different time than the Goforth injury update or vice versa. It's heapin hurtin.

Because we control when news breaks.

Because

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

Leg for that one.

Definitely a bummer for DW4.

If football isn't in his future because of injuries, I do wonder if he'd reconsider a track & field career. During his freshman year, he finished sixth in the triple jump at the NCAA Championships and earned All-America honors. It'd be a long road since it's been over 3 years since he did it competitively, but if anyone is capable it's Wilson.

Very sad for David... If I was in his shoes and my football career was over due to contact related injuries... how about one of the Olympic sports?

Catching animals on foot = gold medal... right?!

Right after the initial sad feelings everyone else is experiencing, I immediately thought of animal control or a more respectable Ace Ventura.

On another note, this has been a busy news day. The tracker was almost completely purged since yesterday. And welcome Joe Lanza to the staff! ;)

To clarify what they meant by 'shutting down'... The Giants have ruled David Wilson out for the 2014 season.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

And here I was thinking DW4 was some sort of backflipping robot being shut down

flip

To be fair, sometimes it can mean they are keeping him out of practice for a period of time, and not necessarily that his season is over, which it in fact is.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

It seems like his career is over.

Giants running back David Wilson was advised today by Dr. Russell Warren, the team's physician and former surgeon-in-chief for the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), and Dr. Frank Cammisa, chief of spine service at HSS, that he should no longer play football. Wilson will be placed on injured reserve for the 2014 season

"I don't want anybody to feel sorry for me, or pity me," said Wilson. "I lived my dream. A lot of people only get to dream their dream. I lived that dream. Now I have a chance to dream another dream and live that, too."

And that's why DW is awesome. Lived it and onto something else.

I'm thankful that he got the opportunity to live his dream, but I'm genuinely sad that we will likely never see him play football again.

Sad for this news, happy to call him a Hokie. I will never forget being in Lane for this:

Thanks, David, for being a great Hokie and a great representative of our program and the sport of football.

"Exit light..."

Disappointed that David's football career isn't going as planned, but I'm excited to see him do other great things with his life.

@historyhokie.bsky.social

It really grinds my gears that Yahoo has the headline of "Young NFL Player Quits" for Wilson's story. Horrible click bait and shitty, misleading headline.

"We judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their behavior" Stephen M.R. Covey

“When life knocks you down plan to land on your back, because if you can look up, you can get up, if you fall flat on your face it can kill your spirit” David Wilson

At age 8 I told my #Dad I wanted to play football in THE NFL at this point in my life I have done that. Even Blessed to be drafted in the 1st round. Broke and set RECORDS, scored Touchdowns, and all that follows. It's a great feeling to live a out dream. Unfortunately that has been paused but I am blessed that I am able to walk away from this game healthy and still able to be me with no restrictions pain or struggle and So all I ask is please don't be sorry or pity ME that's just one chapter life goes on and I'm glad I can live it. Once a Giant always a #Giant #pocketrocket

Leg for including that quote. David Wilson gets it far better than many who spent a decade in the NFL. He'll be fine, even if he's not on our TV every week in the fall.

At least not in a uniform. I won't be surprised at all to see him prowling a sideline and giving Bud a run for "most intense coach in football."

A decade on TKP and it's been time well spent.

I realize money is of little consequence in situations like this, but I just saw David will still be payed about 70% of what's remaining on his contract. It may not be much of a consolation for having to give up an NFL career, but if there's any silver lining here, he's walking away from the game in good health, pain-free, and with the financial security to pursue whatever he wants to do next.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

At this point, that's easily the most money he's ever earned in his life. And seeing how well he has carried himself to this point, I wouldn't be surprised if he's already putting together a decent little portfolio.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

This is very good news. However...

I don't want to be a negative Norwegian Trotter here, but I've heard over and over again that he's leaving the game with this health. In the big picture, I get it, yes, he isn't limping around or stricken in some horrible way, but he has a hurt neck and a hurt back.

Like, I get that he's escaping catastrophic injury, but he very much does have neck and spine problems.

Michael Irvin retired with a similar injury, IIRC. He hasn't shown many ill effects, if any.

There's a vast difference in having a neck injury that could be catastrophic if you play in the NFL, and having a neck injury that has virtually no chance of further bothering you if you lead a 'normal' life, without the constant workouts, collisions, etc. I think that is the overall assumption, that Wilson can be a 'regular guy' with no problems. It's when he slams headfirst into 300 lb NFL players that he would have a potential problem.

I like DW4. Now I'm wondering if he is coming back to finish his degree. Don't forget, he declared early.

Ten bucks says he does. In a suit.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

On to the next adventure:

If Tim Tebow can be an analyst for the SEC Network, why can't David Wilson be one for Raycom? Without hearing DW speak a word, I can guarantee he would be the most entertaining and informative. Of course, working for the Mothership would be the ultimate.

I was having a good day until I read this.

He has handled this with maturity and grace. And he's proven that he has exceptional character, both on and off the field. That's all I ask of our Hokies. And David Wilson is one hell of a Hokie, y'all.

DW4, I wish you the very best.

Maybe it's just me, but there seem to be a lot more Zooey Deschanel gifs recently. I approve.

Sorry. The plethora of New Girl gifs is clearly a reflection of how I'm doing today. Which is little emotionally unstable.

Please excuse my emotional unstableness. I'm currently taking a TKP break from an all day research session for my law school writing requirement. My future consists of 30 pages on legal ethics. Woooooooo.

This DW4 news just put me over the edge.

P.S. I love Zooey. I'm glad you appreciate her, too, ashore.
