Coach Beamer, Loeffler, and Michael Brewer suggested that Virginia Tech was cheated of a perfectly thrown TD pass against Pittsburgh. The touchdown pass Brewer threw to Isaiah Ford was a clean pass. The play was penalized for a delayed of game when one clock was at zero and the other showing 12 seconds. Beamer complained to the officials to no avail. VT only lost by a score. Had the officials allowed the play to stand, it would have been a different ball game.
It was a desperation game for the Pitt Panthers, but did they resort to treachery to end their losing slump or was it an honest mistake?

Second.
Third. Offense played like ish. Defense lost the QB too many times on those read plays. Pitt outplayed us hands down. It was unbelievable that we were still in a position to win late in the game. I don't know how many times the ESPN talked about out 3rd and 12 WR routes that were 3-5 yards. Game plan just sucked. We denied our own pussy touchdowns, dipped in ish and no dork magic whatsoever.
These sort of things need to stop. What's the point of this post at all?
Stuff happens.
no way did they cheat.. play clock malfunction maybe but no way it was on purpose. Lefty, beamer and brewer said the play clocks were a mess all game.. but did it affect pitt??? nope they just ran the ball down our throats
No and I'm not trying to be rude but is this really a thread worthy question?
No, but then neither are most that Blitz posts. At least we were spared the usual link to a piss-poor ESPN article.
The original post of this thread is silly, mainly because of the title, but most of the time HokieBlitz posts links and gets a good discussion going. Honestly, we need more of that around here. Read something interesting about college football, Tech, NCAA hoops share it with the rest of the class. If you're going to discourage someone else from doing so, then you have to step your game up. Them's the rules.
If anything, the refs were trying to give the game to us. VT got a lot of breaks on those very close calls.
McLaughlin had at least two or three false starts that weren't called on top of the few he was whistled for.
What happened to that guy? His play has really taken a step back.
He was jumpy cause the D was getting the edge on him. He was just trying to keep up.
I thought most of the calls went how they should have. That incomplete pass/fumble thing went our way and probably shouldnt have. But how about the obvious facemask on JC's fumble? That was a huge miss and a big turning point.
Either way, we weren't cheated.
We lost. Period.
Its ok, last night will bring about these kind of feelings
but no
No. And frankly, this is an absurd thread topic. We lost because we played bad.
No. One of the play clocks read zero. Brewer is smart enough to know that there wasn't 12 seconds left. Watch the one with zero.
The only real questionable call that I saw was a no-call face masking when J.C. fumbled. But, assuming that VT retains possession, they probably end up going 3 and out anyway.
No, we were not cheated out of a win. We played poorly and we lost.
If we want to win, let's rush for more than 30 yards. Or play offense in the first half.
Actually, I believe we were cheated out of a win...by brewer.
Something with a title like this belongs on Bleacher Report. Sorry HokieBlitz, but this is just bad.
This looks like something an Ohio State fan would publish. The refs had little to do with our loss, if any. I'm sorry, but this might be the worst thread I've read on here before
NO.
However, on the delay of game penalty, besides snapping the ball almost a second too late, that was a beautifully executed play that would have absolutely been a TD catch by Ford.
The fact of the matter is there were inconsistencies between the clocks. Depending on which clock you were looking at, the TD pass was good. Was it the only reason VT lost the game? No. But that type of clock mismanagement shouldnt happen on a prime time game. Coach Beamer reported the issue to the officials and ACC supervisor Doug Rhoads is reviewing the matter to prevent it in the future.
Of course Frank also said post-game that he thought Brewer was watching the clock that went to zero, NOT the clock that went to twelve.
I understand that doesn't support the massive conspiracy that all of college football has always had against anything Hokie-related, but it is what Frank said. Also, you not only strongly implied it was THE reason that we lost the game, but you insinuated that Pitt did it deliberately. That's really pathetic on all counts.
Sometimes, we just lose the game because it is our fault.
It's a poor argument. One of the clocks was correct, and the QB has to have a clock in his head as well. If Michael Brewer, as a starting QB for a D1 program doesn't know the difference between 25 seconds and 37 seconds, we've got bigger problems than I realized.
If you're going to spout conspiracy theories, the no-call face mask when JC fumbled was much more obvious... That got Pitt their 2nd TD.
Overall though, I thought the officiating was pretty good, and in no way changed the game.
Nope nope nope. Honestly don't like discussions like this on the board either, but I won't rant.
Interesting question...can the power of the moderator -10 a forum? And if he can, what happens to a -10 forum? Does it disappear from the active discussions?
Not sure, I'd have to ask Joe on that one. I assume all manner of downvoting works the same way.EDIT: Tried it since I know I can reset. Yes, I can -10 a thread topic. It has no effect on whether or not it is displayed in the Active Discussions, and it is not blurred.
That said, I'm not downvoting this thread because it's not offensive. I will state, for the record, that I do not think it's worthy of its own thread in the least. Post a question in one of the several existing discussions on everything that went wrong last night, not a new topic for people to start arguments (though, largely, people have been pretty good this week). This topic having its own thread is pretty worthless. Everyone needs to remember the Guidelines requirement of being mindful of the "signal-to-noise" ratio. Not every thought that comes to mind merits a thread.
Now, if up/downvoting threads became a mechanism for hiding bad ones or promoting interesting ones, then I'd see the a bigger benefit to up/downvoting this one.
So I shouldn't start that thread on Bucky Hodges Helmet Hair?
OT and fun is always OK, that's one of the primary things we do around here. But posts like these, where there's some implication of conspiracy or something, are just going to unnecessarily get people more pissed off than they are. Joe added the text of my post from a few weeks back to the Community Guidelines (I was very honored by that) about what should and shouldn't be a new topic. Talking fun stuff about our team is always OK and spawns lots of (definitely needed) laughs and camaraderie. Talking about how something conspired to screw us over just isn't necessary.
Every time Bucky takes off his helmet
Oh, I'm not saying this thread should be downvoted, just a curiosity of mine. Fortunately, since Joe changed the turkey leg procedure and modified the minimum needed to start a forum, we haven't seen as many bad threads as we did after the ECU game. There's usually still one where it all gets hashed out, but it's not multiple like it's been before. So that's something.
Yep, I think there's been a net improvement, so thanks to Joe for that. Just figured I would kill two birds with one stone and mention my thoughts re: downvoting this thread at the same time.
edit: oops...
SNR? You took astrophysics didn't you?
Nope. Pulled that one from the Community Guidelines. But it is also a relevant term in UV/vis spectroscopy, which was part of my biochemistry coursework. I always though astrophysics would be fun, but alas no time for more degrees...
"No. This thread is so worthless.... we beat Michigan though"
Ha! We all have brought a bad topic to the table. The only ones who haven't are the only ones who haven't. :-)
I would see no problem discussing the way delay of game penalties are called at all levels. Look at UF had the benefit twice of a play clock reaching zero but snapping the ball just as the official looked back from the clock. You can not tell me there is not a way for a zebra to have something on his body synched with the play clock that lets him know its zero and to call the penalty? Was it cheating, no, is the system broken yes. Just like with first downs all these millions can not get a system on the field that always knows where the ball is?
LOLNOPE.
Just stop.
Why did I click on this thread?
Do I think we were wronged by the delay of game call? Yes, I do, but it wasn't on purpose and shit happens. Also, post whatever the F you want, this is a free country (and website) pal.
Just because you CAN post whatever you want doesn't mean you should. If people keep making pointless topics that get spammy again, Joe will have to change the requirements again. If people can control themselves, then it isn't an issue and we can continue to post freely.
TKP is a privledge, not a right.
Fee or free? There is a quite a difference
In times like these I'd like to direct people to this handy XKCD:
Free Speech
The part I love most about Tech fans is the fact we don't make excuses (outside of our own team screwing up) for losses. It's rare any Tech fans are caught complaining about refs, the other team or even an injury to our own players for a loss. That crap is for the birds (no pun intended). This post, however, completely negates everything I just stated. I feel like this headline was only created to piss people off more, start arguments, and point the blame at someone else other than the team at fault. This thread is not what Hokie Nation is all about, and I am glad this is the first unreasonable post I have found on TKP
USC 2004 -- yeah, there was that questionable pass interference....actually, that game was so long ago, I can't really remember much else about it.
Sugar Bowl vs. Auburn -- I remember thinking near the end of the game that the ball wasn't being placed fast enough, and maybe we could have gotten another snap off. But, we basically rolled over for three quarters before finally being bothered to find the end zone.
The other Sugar Bowl -- If we hadn't made so many mistakes during regulation, we wouldn't have to defend Danny Coale's catch.
Bottom line, don't play poorly for 80% of the game and then blame the outcome on the ref.
Agreed. I will say, that Sugar Bowl against Michigan was one fluky game if I ever saw one. We should have won it simply because we should have played better, but I will say UM completed some very lucky passes. I still think Coale still caught that ball (who doesn't?), but that UM team had some talent for sure. I always thought Shoelace was way overrated, but that was a very good team we played that year. But yeah, bottom line is we don't and shouldn't ever blame the ref for any loss. The only exception ever I would ever make to my last sentence was the infamous interception touchdown Golden Tate "caught" in 2012. But that is a different story for a different post. Plus, Green Bay went on to do pretty well that year if I remember correctly.
It's hard to remember anything prior to "it was a catch!"...but my vague memories include:
-We couldn't do crap on first and second down, but give us third and long and Logan would make magic happen.
-David Wilson's twenty yard backwards runs finally caught up to him. After seeing so many miracle runs during the season, I knew he was going to have one go sour and bite us in the ass...and it hit in the bowl game.
As for blaming refs, I think replacement and Pac-12 refs would make quite a few exceptions. And now, I'm not referring to the Sugar Bowl...Pac-12 refs are just bad in general.
I don't remember the Sugar Bowl vs. Auburn call, but both the pass interference against USCs and the overturned catch against Michigan stand out in my mind.
The USCw call shifted momentum in the game, but if I recall correctly, that was still in the...first half? The call was significant and incorrect, but only shifted the game and didn't directly determine the outcome. So as much as I remember it being a bad call that went against us, I wouldn't necessarily say we were hosed.
Danny's Catch, however, had a much bigger impact. Had the call about his catch rightly stood after review, Michigan would have gotten the ball back and I think we would have stopped them, as we had been stopping them all game. It's rare that you get post-hoc confirmation of your opinion, but when the Danny Coale Rule was enacted, it justified all of our feelings on the matter.
Having said that, I agree with you fully that we had played so poorly for much of that game that complaining about that call is a little ignorant of us. It was a catch. We know this. But we allowed a handful of really impactful plays that made it so that we were in that position in the first place.
there is no doubt the TD was good. Why in the world do you have unsynchronized clocks at a game in a power 5 conference? and the call just so happened to go in favor of the Panthers. that was one of the reasons tech lost the game.
Delay of game is supposed to be a dead ball foul. The play is supposed to be blown dead before it happens. It was never going to count, and there's a good chance the play wouldn't have worked if there was no penalty because some of the players probably stopped playing when they heard the whistle.
If you want to talk about a play that the refs cost us...it's that long run that set up Pitt's last TD. Our defender had the right angle on the ball carrier, but the ref was in between. So, defender had to adjust around him, and that was all the Pitt runner needed to get 20 yards.
But, like any "what if" play we've seen over the last decade, if the team had performed better prior to that, it wouldn't have been an issue.
No the Hokie offense (If that group even qualifies as one) was awful. They lost us the game not the officials or anyone else...And I know that first touchdown was a terrible play by Jarrett, but the defense should be able to make one bad play and not have to worry about it. Unlike the offense which maybe had a handful of actually half-decent plays.
VT was cheated of a TD, but did plenty enough on their own to give up the win.
We cheated ourselves out of a win by playing the worst half of football I've seen since the Rutgers game. Can anyone recall a worst first half?
ECU. Pitt 2012.
What bluehokie actually said: "Salt, meet wound!"
I don't think we were cheated, we just sucked. But why does this post have so many downvotes? I think it was a legitimate topic to post on here. He wasn't making something up, it was based on what the coaches were saying.
I don't think we were cheated. But if we're being honest that game totally changes if we score there.
With that being said I felt like we caught a lot of lucky breaks and also got caught on the wrong end of a lot of deals. Overall I thought the officiating crew was garbage, but they were garbage to both teams. I wanted to rip the TV off the mantle every time I heard Doug Rhoads open his mouth. It seemed as if he said every review should be called one way while it actually went the other way. It gives me the feeling as if there isn't a good sense of cohesiveness within the ACC Officiating department.
But that's a bigger picture and a whole 'nother discussion. We didn't deserve to win that football game. We just didn't play good.
