Defensive tackle Clay Dean of Purcellville's Woodgrove HS got an introduction to Virginia Tech much earlier than the average recruit.
Dean says he had a pair of older sisters that decided to become Hokies, giving him plenty of chances to get acquainted with Blacksburg over the years.
"Without them going to Tech, I might have never gotten a chance to learn more about the school, I wouldn't have gotten to go to my first college football game there as a kid," Dean said.
Luckily for the Hokies, his family ties to the school are strong, convincing him to commit to Tech and become the program's ninth recruit to join the 2016 class.
"I've been in the stands, I've jumped to 'Enter Sandman,' so I know what it's like there," Dean said. "I can't wait to go from watching that to being on the field for it. It's incredible."
Dean, who's rated a 3-star recruit according to 247Sports, was ready to make his pledge even though Tech was his only FBS offer. But given his feelings toward the Hokies, his thought process was simple: why wait?
"I realized I didn't want to wait for any other offers when I already had an offer from my dream school," Dean said.
Dean's head coach at Woodgrove, Michael Skinner, says had he been a little more patient, the offers would've likely started to roll in, but he understands why Dean wasn't willing to wait.
"UVA was thinking about offering him, and my guess is that by next month more offers would've started to come in," Skinner said. "But he's liked them from day one. He was so excited when they offered a few weeks ago."
Even though the Hokies only extended Dean an offer at the start of February, Skinner says they've had their eye on him nearly as long as he's been interested in the program.
"I have a great relationship with their staff, I've probably had at least 12 kids go there over the years," Skinner said. "So around the middle of the last season I told them to give him a look and I guess they liked what they saw."
That prodding from Skinner encouraged lead recruiter Torrian Gray and Bud Foster to start looking Dean's way and start the process in earnest.
But they didn't get a chance to show him around campus until the team's Junior Day on February 28. During that event, Dean says he got a chance to get to know both Foster and Charley Wiles a little more.
"He had a great time, and his parents were really impressed," Skinner said. "They were familiar obviously with campus, but not really the football side of it until that trip."
That effort culminated in Dean's big call to Gray yesterday morning to give him the news he'd be pulling the trigger and committing.
Once he made the pledge, talk quickly turned to where he might line up for the Hokies.
"Today, Coach Gray was saying they were looking at me as a defensive tackle, but obviously I'll be on the defensive line somewhere," Dean said.
To Skinner, that assessment makes a fair bit of sense.
"We played him at both defensive line and offensive line last year, but he mainly played defensive tackle, and that's where he'll probably end up," Skinner said. "We even had him at tight end as a sophomore, but that was mainly as a blocker."
Given Dean's size, DT looks like a likely option. Dean already boasts a robust 6'2" frame, and Skinner sees him adding plenty of weight to that before all is said and done.
"He's about 250 (pounds) right now, but by the time he leaves he'll probably be about 270, 275," Skinner said. "He was about 215 as a sophomore and he grew two inches, so you can tell he's got room to grow yet."
Dean's ready to meet that challenge and pack on some muscle.
"I think I work really hard in the weight room, that's what it's all about," Dean said.
Beyond his size, Skinner says Dean's speed and athleticism are what will set him apart at Tech.
"He's extremely athletic for a big guy, he's got such a high motor," Skinner said. "He can dunk a basketball, he even played baseball last year."
For all his coach's effusive praise, Dean still sees some room for improvement.
"I definitely want to get faster and be more deadly in the pass rush," Dean said.
Amidst his training ahead of his senior season, Dean also hopes to make another trip back to Blacksburg this spring, for either a practice or a game.
He says he hasn't given any thought to enrolling early just yet, but it's clear he seems well suited to carry on his family's legacy with the Hokies when he does join the team.
"They were just his number one choice all along," Skinner said. "He'll definitely do well there."

Dude is a Beast inside. He is so fast off the ball. Gets leverage early. Great stuff.
So here comes the SEC offers, ACC offers, and other state school offers. I think his family connections stick.
Welcome to Hokie Nation, Dean!
His quickness off the ball is definitely the most noticeable trait. It's like he knew the snap count on every play.
So, do early commits reduce our overall recruiting ranking? I mean, if the more offers someone gets, the higher they're ranked, you'd think that committing early would reduce the overall number of offers of a recruit, thus lowering his eventual rating. I mean, recruiting class rankings are kind of pointless anyway, but what else is there to talk about in march?
this x1000. This is why I never really trust recruiting rankings. Too big of a feedback loop. Much prefer stuff like French's analysis.
This is a loaded question. Each recruiting service has a different methodology for how they calculate class rankings, however I believe both the quantity (class size) and quality (individual ranking) is how Rivals and 247Sports calculate. For example, according to 247Sports Tech has the 13th overall class with 9 commitments, average commit ratings of 84.55. Meanwhile, Penn State has the 15th overall class with 5 commitments, average rating of 92.78. I don't pay much attention to recruiting ratings, but average commit rating is a more telling metric.
Right now Tech's 2016 class has a lot of middle of the pack (in the eyes of the recruiting services) prospects.
Is that anything more than an assumption?
Fortunately or unfortunately, being an early commit doesn't keep you from getting offers these days. If this kid is worth more offers, they will come.
If you were to rank our best players top to bottom, you'd find that ratings, and by extension ranking, do matter
There have also been plenty of exceptions over the years: Coale, Boykin, Tyler, Grimm, pre-Kendall Fullers, etc.
Of course there are exceptions. That's what happens when our 3 stars outnumber our 4 stars by over 4 to 1. The ratings aren't perfect. But they're still a pretty good indicator. Its not a coincidence our best current players are higher rated guys, with Maddy and Dadi being the obvious exceptions
Well our 2013 defense had 2 players on it ranked higher than 3 star and finished in the top 10. Take out Jarrett and Kendall and there is a dropoff of course but it still would've been a great unit.
And our offense? You're cherry picking the point I'm making
I think his point may have been that scheme and coaching can overcome talent disparities to a degree.
There is very little difference between mid to high 3* and low to mid 4* -- which is where VT mostly lives.
Fans spend way too much time overthinking differences of 2/10ths or 3/10ths of a star...
I like the sound of a DT that can dunk. The DT pantry is looking fabulous.
Here's a DT who could dunk. The original Skywalker
Nice! Can't remember who, but I remember some announcer saying,
"You could put a dollar bill on top of the backboard, and Thompson could go up
and get it, and leave some change."
Edit: This DT talk caused me to take a walk down memory lane. Apparently, that "change off the top of the backboard" stuff was common bluster. I believed it with Thompson though, until I found this:
Mitch Kupchak witnessed a similar jump-off among 6-4 David Thompson, 6-9 Marvin Barnes and 7-4 Tom Burleson.
"David came the closest," Kupchak said. "He was six or eight inches away. I don't believe anyone has ever done it. If you play the game, you know how high that is. You're entering another world up there. No man, I don't believe, has been up that far."
for the history buffs
Seems like we're getting a lot of people with us as their only offer. Anyone know if that's typical for commits this early in the process or just a fluke of this year?
Little column A, little column B. The bigger names will always get out there and be highly ranked, of course, but the 3star type guys are gonna fly under the radar a bit. A big part of that is that once they commit, they often don't camp at other schools, so they don't get as much exposure. So while he might not be a superstar, he isn't a scrub just because he doesn't have any other offers. Now if he goes the rest of the year up until signing day without a single additional offer, then yeah, that probably isn't ideal.
I don't know - when someone says they committed early because it was there dream school only the top 10 teams in the country are going to think they have enough of a chance to get them, and won't waste the offer. There are plenty of very good players that do not get Bama and FSU offers. If he had said I'm committing, but still taking visits, teams would be more likely to test the water with an offer or visit, etc, but I don't see many schools thinking they compete with us for a prospect that talks like this, and doubt they view it as worth their time to try unless they view him as 5 star talent.
In the film starting at around 1:12 he pushes his blocker 10 yards backwards into the QB. Sure, its HS, but me likey!
Welcome to the Hokies Clay Dean.
Top Gun ALWAYS gets a leg!!
Iron Eagle was better....
Blasphemy
CHAPPIE!!!

That arrow wouldn't have been able to take off after smashing both its wings into the deck, much less do that barrel roll at 150 feet. I can't believe someone managed to make Top Gun less realistic.
I like getting the kids from Hokie families. Good support system. If he's got the talent, all the better.
I agree. I love a kid who has always wanted to be a Hokie. Screw the stars.
I got bored.
I dig it
This should be AMB's new avi.
Wow...thanks guys...
I think this kid has more potential than Josh Sweat, I'm sure other schools will offer him now that he has committed to us
