OT: What a batter sees.....

I loved playing baseball as a kid.

But I sucked at hitting.
It could have been my myopia, poor depth perception, my color blindness.....or maybe I just sucked.
But to quote Billy Bragg: 'There is no real substitute, for a ball struck squarely and firmly.'
That feeling of coming around on a pitch and feeling and hearing the bat connect with the ball is a simple but grand pleasure.

Maybe that's why I love to watch baseball now; any level: from the Bigs to my youngest son playing rec league. I get to watch with enthusiasm, in hope of hearing the bat 'crack' as the ball is put into play.

At VT, a large portion of my physics course was based upon projectile motion using baseball as a study. This kept my interest and I have read as physicists debate if and how a breaking ball has movement.
The Mechanics of a Breaking Ball

For years, the questions were whether a breaking pitch actually curved or whether it was just an optical illusion, or even simply a matter of trajectory. But now, with the availability of a laser-based, computerized optical system such as Supervision (see sidebar), it has been proven that the ball actually changes its flight path on the way to home plate.

But its one thing to throw it......another thing entirely different to hit it.

Look at this video breaking down the Yankees' Rivera's Cutter ball:

And so, finally, from reddit, an image showing what hitters actually see in the less than 1/2 second that they have to decide whether to stay or swing and where to place the bat based upon the expected motion from the recognized pitch:

I hope some of the other baseball nerds will find this interesting in our non-football season.

I am upvoting this because baseball and because I would love to get back out there on the diamond again some time soon.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Nice.
I sucked as a batter as well.
Good fielder, awful hitter.

Good at getting walks though.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I was the opposite...Great hitter (never struck out, always at least got a piece of the ball or a hit) but was a sucky fielder... OK infielder, horrible outfielder...

Thanks for sharing. This type of stuff always fascinates me. It's pretty amazing just how good Rivera was.

That was very cool. Thanks for sharing.

Always swing hard, in case you hit it.

Cool post. I wish I had been good at baseball. I was good at getting hit by pitch, but that's about it.

This is amazing. Thank you for putting this together and posting.

I'm glad to hear there are other amateur ball players who were great fielders but piss poor hitters. I ended up playing a lot of catcher and first base because I could catch anything thrown at me, but boy I couldn't hit a beachball with a tennis racket.

I shared the video with a friend of mine (who is also a Yankees fan, but I forgive him) and he provided me with this link:

Great read for those who want to know a bit about the physics of pitching and spin.

"Exit light..."

Ooh, that is fascinating stuff. Yay for science in baseball!

Fascinating, Captain!

Fantastic post. Thank you.

I'll brag a little. My son is a hell of a baseball player and hits like a kid who should be 130 lbs instead of 90. He is an ok pitcher who struggles with accuracy. But when his knuckleball is on, it is nasty as hell

Great article; I really enjoyed this short-but detailed write up. Thx for sharing, I too struggled at times batting, and it is helpful to see and identify the ways to recognize the different spins on the ball. And, as a casual observer, I never knew why Mariano received such praise; the video tells me why! Amazing control.

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

I definitely couldn't hit because of my myopia. Yeah that's it. That's why I'm not in the majors right now. Someone get me some glasses, stat!

I can get you some beergoggles

This is going to be great for the ACC.
