2016 OT Zach Adams of Fredericksburg's Riverbend HS hasn't just known Tech offensive line coach Stacy Searels longer than he's been with the Hokies; he's known Searels longer than some players have been on the team.
Adams hails from Texas originally, and as he was dipping his toe in the recruiting waters, he had plenty of chances to encounter Searels when he still stalked the sideline for the Texas Longhorns.
"I've camped with Coach Searels for the past three years, two at Texas and one at Tech," Adams said. "I've really enjoyed getting to know him."
That familiarity and Adams' status as an in-state recruit mean that he's gotten plenty of attention from the Hokies so far in the process. Tech has yet to officially make him an offer, but they still invited the rising senior down to Blacksburg for a look at spring practice last Saturday.
"It was my first time really touring campus, and I loved it," Adams said. "I got to watch practice and hang out with Coach Searels and Coach (Bud) Foster a lot."
While the coaches admitted in a meeting to cap off the visit that they weren't yet ready to offer him, Adams says he's eagerly eyeing the program if they should extend a scholarship his way.
"I'd love to play there, it's definitely been on my mind," Adams said.
It would seem that his favorable impression of Searels already has Adams envisioning what it would be like to learn under him someday.
"He expects perfect effort," Adams said. "Even if you're making a mistake, he just wants you to go full speed and hit somebody."
Adams says he's put in a great deal of effort over the last few years to make sure that when he does hit someone, they're well aware of his presence.
"I've gotten a lot stronger over the past year," Adams said. "I'm up about 20 pounds from a year ago."
According to Adams, that weight gain has him fluctuating between 305 and 310 pounds to go along with his 6"7" frame.
Adams' coach at Riverbend, Tony DeMarco, has witnessed the transformation firsthand.
"He just benched 300 pounds, that's up 100 pounds for him over the last two years," DeMarco said. "And he's doing this as a guy with really long arms. He probably has a wingspan of 6'10", 6'11", so he's got an extra foot to go when he's benching."
With that kind of combination of size and strength, it's no wonder that Adams says coaches project him as a tackle at the next level, Searels included.
"I've known him since middle school, and it's always been clear he was going to be a left tackle," DeMarco said.
That's the role he's often played at Riverbend, and DeMarco says he excels at protecting the blind side.
"He's a really excellent pass protector," DeMarco said. "His strength is definitely the pass, but he's athletic enough to get out there and run block downfield."
DeMarco notes that athleticism means he's often trailing running plays all the way down the field, even if it gets him in trouble sometimes.
"He had 10 holding penalties last year, but so many of them were all the way down the field," DeMarco said. "He had one that was 40 yards down the field, how often do you see that? He just has the athletic ability to spring guys for touchdowns with the way he can run."
But DeMarco thinks Adams still has some room to work on finishing his blocks, no matter how far downfield he goes to make them.
"He needs to finish better, coaches want to see pancakes," DeMarco said. "He knows he needs to improve on that, he's had plenty of coaches tell him that."
Yet Adams believes coaches aren't just evaluating what he does on the field.
"It's what I do off the field as well, I'm a really loyal guy and I have good grades, I think that's a big factor too," Adams said.
So far, his combination of character and athletic capability has only enticed one school to offer him. UVA is the only program to take the plunge and offer Adams, but he spent the day on Tennessee's campus Tuesday, and is hearing plenty from West Virginia and N.C. State as well.
But despite getting some interest from other big programs, Adams is anxiously hoping his next visit to Tech can get him the offer from the Hokies he so dearly desires.
"I'll be coming down for camp this summer on June 14th," Adams said. "They say they really want to see what I can do there, and then maybe an offer will come."

Bring them in tough and strong and bla bla bla I WANT #ALLTHELINEMEN
Adams is the kid on the right, I hope?
He is
If not then the kid on the right is taller than Bucky.
Or the kid on the right is Andre the Giant's son.
I know I posted this recently, but it's still funny
Can we just go ahead and offer? WTF are they waiting for?
We waste quite a bit of offers on "Athletes"; lets throw a flyer on a 6'-7" kid who has been practicing at this position his whole life (cough other OL).
I am sure the coaches have a reason they haven't offered yet. It hasn't been because of lack of interest, especially given his long standing relationship with Coach Searels. Stacey might just be trying to continue to motivate him, knowing that with improved effort he will be getting a player who is closer to making the jump from HS to College.
If this young man ends up at LOLuva, it will make me sick. Hope he can get his bench press up near 350 by June and impress the coaches with his athleticism. 6'7" with mobility, wingspan and years of playing on the OL is a good HS resume.
It will make you sick that a guy we didn't offer goes to UVA?
My point is that a player who WANTS to be Hokie having to go to LOLuva as his only scholly offer is an unpleasant situation. I well understand the dynamics of how scholarships are allocated, and that offers are needs-based. In my perfect world, all in-state top-30 talent would go to VT or out of state and LOLuva would be left with scraps from outside VA. I can dream...
Well for the time being it looks like Duke is grabbing some of the academic priority kids that UVA might have got in the past. After missing on Levonta Taylor, it looks like UVA could be in some serious trouble with recruiting. Their recruiting window seems to be closed after doing nothing with a handful of great recruits. They'll be back to scraps shortly.
"They'll be back to scraps shortly."
All in favor? Aye!!!!
Leg!
Seems like the guy is really wanting to be a Hokie and has the measurables for a lineman to go along with a strong relationship with the position coach. I wonder why VT is hesitant to offer? Does the kid have a club foot or something?
Due to the fact that we will honor every offer we place, a player must have an appropriate level of value to receive one. We certainly have a "Big Board" of recruits that we are after and he may very well be at the top of the "wait and see" list. Hit priorities and send several offers out there and in places where we can wait a little, like with a 3* OL in our home state whom we already have a good relationship with, we will wait a little bit and see where the dominoes fall.
We have no problem converting a commitable offer to a grayshirt offer, so its not like our hands are completely tied if we oversign.
A greyshirt is still a offer. Just not for this year.
No argument. I'm just saying there is wiggle room if we oversign. Just because we send an offer out doesn't mean that our hands are tied if that target commits.
But a grey shirt is still someone you want...just not this year. I'm sure that the coaches haven't forgotten about this option with this kid.
Maybe there's more to playing football than measurables and a relationship with a coach? Maybe the coaches have their eye right now on some players that better fit what VT wants or needs? Unless you hit the jackpot, you probably only sign maybe 4 or 5 OL in a class...and VT already has one commitment and there's a long way to go before next Feb.
There are probably a bunch of big kids who would love to play OL for VT, but we're only hearing of this one because there's a story.
It's rare to have any connection to a recruit but I have some knowledge of Zach. Great kid. Originally from Texas and will go to UT if they offer.
I would love to see him at VT.
Zach is the right kid for VT! In work ethic and spirit--he reminds me of Greg Stroman (I coached both of them) in that they are both fierce competitors and always want to win (even in practice) and will do what it takes to win.
I was Zach's OC last year (and former OC at Stonewall Jackson, having coached Tim Settle, Reggie Floyd & Greg Stroman, also) and I still work him out with OL offseason workouts. What this article and it's statements lack noting Zach's "high ceiling"--for he has probably the greatest ceiling of any player I have coached; he is probably the strongest leader of any player I have recently coached; his high football IQ, not to mention his positional (OL) IQ; and, his work ethic and ability to self correct and improve is greater than most players I have coached.
Further, of any player I have coached before, like Greg Stroman, I think it is possible to see both players playing Sunday football! .
Need anymore info...contact me at "BW QB Coach @ManeuverFootbal" on twitter and there is more I can say about Zach in this article.
and we're waiting to offer him, because?
thanks for the direct info, by the way
There are things that i could state about your question--but not here. If you can contact me on my twitter handle.
What I can say, I saw the same thing with Greg Stroman--a clear cut next level player--but schools held out on him in spite of being the best football player in Prince William County Virginia (2012-2013). In the case of both players, schools have a definitive process they follow and sometimes it ends up being a waiting game for offers.
But, if you want to know more....just contact me @maneuverfootbal on twitter....But, I can absolutely guarantee Zach to Tech!
my question was mostly rhetorical, but thanks for the info. not on twitter myself anyway
looks like a great player. hope he makes it to VT
Straight from the horse's mouth....oh wait...don't tell HOAT I said that. #TeamPie and #AllTheLineman
HOAT? (I am new to this board)

Looks like I'm a bit too late
You had a good run here.
As a fun side note, he's been seeking out several writers to give his input. Yes, you read that right.. not the other way around.
Maybe he should give this a look...
I knew it sounded fishy when it was like "Hi guys! I know about stuff. Talk to me on Twitter!"
So, wait. Is he or is he not who he claims to be?
It's more about dissing TKP that got him banned than any kind of false claims about who he is. From what I can tell from reading his twitter, and the other people he's interacted with on twitter, he is an offensive assistance coach at Briar Woods HS (**** Birmingham goes there) and coaches/trains this OL on the side.
Apparently because TKP stuck to the basic facts about this OL's recruitment and didn't blow rainbows up everyone's butts about how awesome he is, the article was terrible.
Wow. I could get banning someone for self-promotion if this guy was turning a profit on something, but just for calling a TKP article terrible? Don't get me wrong, the guy struck me as a douchenozzle, but did he actually break the community guidelines?
You don't have to break the 'guidelines' to be banned, you just have to piss Joe off. At least that's always been my understanding. And tossing unwarranted insults at TKP seems to be a quick way to piss Joe off.
Welp, it says right in the guidelines, "Don't self-promote." I always thought it said something about for profit, but it don't.
In my estimation he created an account to give his two cents on Adams' recruitment and self-promote. He accomplished that and now he's gone.
I did get pissed, and it was because I know how much Koma breaks his ass to write these stories. These recruiting stories don't magically appear. Koma has to track down coaches, kids and parents to make it all come together. This is what Alex does at night, after his 9-5 job, and on the weekends. He doesn't have a brand like Rivals or 247Sports to lean on, so someone spouting off like that rubs me the wrong way. It affects Koma's credibility and it's unwarranted. Moreover, he puts the effort into writing an actual feature on the kids. He could easily just give you a height, weight, top five, hudl video, quote from the kid and call it a day. Instead he tries to give the kid his moment. With Zach, we knew he wasn't a high profile recruit, but because he's from Virginia and is trying to get his name out there Koma wrote the feature. I don't think he's ever written a recruiting feature with a negative slant. Had his coach mentioning his ceiling it most likely would have been printed because that's good info.
More to your point, there have been plenty of people who have pissed me off and still have an active account. I believe the folks who have been banned, deserved it based on the guidelines in place.
Right on. Thanks for clarifying.
Is it beer-o'clock yet?
Sure enough, it is!
He was definitely playing both sides against the middle to get himself a bigger social media footprint. This place is probably better off without him. It was just hard for me to figure out exactly what you meant in the first post. And I can see your point, it's different criticizing the reporting staff than the commentary, and it's different dismissing an article as terrible than saying "I wish they would have focused more on..."
None of my business anyway.
So, did you drop the ban hammer on him?
Click his name to try and view his profile = "access denied" that indicates to me that he was banned. Could be wrong tho? Joe?
I love these kinds of reports on recruits. Thanks Maneuver, and welcome to TKP. #teamcake
I was so with you on this....

and then you threw in the '#teamcake' at the end.
Whatever Shoog says, I am always giving him a leg. Even if he insults me.
As I do you, my NC friend.
But now I feel badly as I would never intend to insult you.
I am sorry if anything offended you.
