Buzz = Me
Wilkins = My TV during this game
I think Isaiah Wilkins is my new favorite Hokie.
On a squad that has our all time assist leader, a 46% 3 point shooter, Blackshear going HAM, and our next first round draft pick (NAW)?
yeah. I guess I can see it. He has the spirit of VT.
He is the definition of OKG. I think he is gonna have a big jump from this season to next with a full offseason under Buzz.
He's like Marcus Smart 2.0
Marcus Smarter, if you will
Then we ask them politely, yet firmly to leave.
Houdini Hill
Aside from Hill's moves, look at the rest of the team. NAW takes a quick step to the corner, Outlaw slowly moves to a better shooting spot, Bede backsteps out of the way (in case Hill needs to pass back to him or maybe preparing for transition defense) and Blackshear is also open.
I know very little about bball, but I read somewhere in order to appreciate everything that's going on, don't look at the ball from time to time and just follow what everybody else is doing to see all the difference nuances. This team is so fun to watch!
Maybe I'm just an eternal pessimist, but when I look at the other players, Blackshear in particular, all I see is that nobody is crashing the boards. One of my few gripes with Buzzketball is that it feels like we never win the rebound battle (against top-tier opponents). Obviously, one factor in that is the fact that we're at a size disadvantage to most such opponents, but it also seems that we have a philosophy that the first shot had damned well better fall, because we're not even trying for second-chance points. Everyone's just trying to get back on defense. Obviously, getting back on D is a good thing, but I'd love to see more putbacks and second-chance scoring opportunities. I know that what we're doing works pretty damned well, so I shouldn't complain, but itjust goes so far against how I was taught to play the game that it always bugs me.
That has been the way we've played offense by design for nearly the entire time Buzz has been here. There was probably an even stronger emphasis on not overcommitting to the offensive glass last night because stopping Duke's transition game was considerably more important that the odd offensive rebound. Duke has one of the best transition games in the country and we were going to live and die by that, not the offensive glass. Buzz said as much in the pregame interview and touched on it again in the post game.
Yeah, Reddish is deadly at those trailing-transition 3's and we held him to only a couple of those opportunities. . One was even late enough that it wasn't really transition, but he was still the last one to arrive in the front court and his defender was basically doubling the ball as if it were still transition because Reddish was so far away.
And that's not even considering how good Barrett and Reddish are at driving to the rim in the open court
Duke averaged 16 points a game in transition coming into the game.
The Hokies held them to 5 points in transition. The Hokies scored 9 in transition.
Duke scored 11 points on Second Chance opportunities, the Hokies scored 9 points.
Hokies outscored Duke 26-24 in the paint.
Only committing six turnovers really helps limits the transition points against. Duke had one steal in the whole game. One!!!!
A lot of people don't give Bede credit, but I think Buzz does. Wabissa was a good part of the reason that Duke had one steal, and he played some stout D
Bede played one of the best games of his career last night, it was awesome to see him play great D while avoiding some of the mistakes he had been making on offense. Not to mention nailing a couple big shots when the opportunities presented themselves.
Hope that builds his confidence. He's gotta take those 3s when he's getting good looks. With confidence...the ball will fall through the net.
He gets so much lift on his jump shots, I'm not sure I've seen anyone jump so high before he releases his shot. It certainly speaks to his athleticism, and I'm certainly no expert, but could putting so much effort into the lift negatively affect his shooting mechanics?
He has a very strange defensive dribble stance. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that his role is to set up the offense and not necessarily create a lot off the bounce; lots of dribble handoffs to NAW or entry passes to Blackshear at the elbow for that crossing-dive set.
He delivered in a big way. The confidence to take 3s (and not overdue it), his strength on the ball in resetting when plays broke down, probing the defense just enough to get Duke out of their zone. It was by far the best game I have seen. Future is bright at PG.
Funny thing is he coulda just laid that in or dunked it frontside, cause the Duke defender at the basket just got the hell out of the way......
You'll never make SportsCenter with that outlook :)
one of the best moves I've seen in awhile. in real time I said..."how the hell did he do that"
The defense by Jack White on this play. Oof, that's just bad. I mean I get that you're trying to double team and trap Hill, but White just gave him the baseline as an out to a guy who has the ability to finish at the rim with no backside help. And if Reddish comes in to really contest the shot they're leaving (I think... hard to tell) Barrett with the decision on whether or not he leaves NAW or Outlaw wide the F open from 3 (which would have been Outlaw after he rotated over, which is a very bad person to leave that open)
That decision to not close the baseline pretty much cost Duke that possession. Hill made a great move to score, but once he was able to get around White, we pretty much had our pick of 3 wide open shots.
The Duke player under the basket thinking:
"Ohh, hell no. I ain't getting in front of that."
It definitely was great to see them play with so much confidence and not be in awe of Duke.
"This ain't my first rodeo."
-Ahmed Hill, probably
Was his hair really on fire?!
Video evidence confirms
Joined TKPC just for this giftory. So hype. And your ploy worked on me Joe
Fam!
I think we have a new Bacon Queen of VT
Same girl in both? put it in (Hokie) stone
I believe this was her as well:
Yes, from the same game as the second bacon image
Is her Dad the cameraman? Multiple fans of the game? I'm calling Shenanigans
They're both from the GT GIFtory a couple weeks ago
Quality and Qualified
When I was attending classes, I don't remember the girls being that excited about meat...
You definitely weren't an ag major
They may not have been excited about yours..... ;^)
Back in my day, it was a lot harder than missing 2 free throws for a girl to meet my meat...
If that was the case, I would've been VT's Most Wanted Bachelor based on my stat lines at McComas.
Mmmm......bacon. ;)
I don't know how many times Duke showed their zone defense, but I noticed it live (and commentator mentioned it) in the one clip. The team reacted so well to that, immediately got it to KJ in the middle of the zone, moved the ball around, and got the open 3. Great recognition and execution by the team!
As opposed to Duke, who really had no answer for our zone outside of letting Barrett try and beat Bede or Hill off the dribble (and only having marginal success at that). They didn't know how to handle us leaving one or two of their players effectively unguarded because we had no respect whatsoever for the shots of Trey Parker and Jack White.
The announcers started feeling for Jack White (sic?), was like 0-28 from 3 over his last few games. They were saying "We don't care who wins, I just want to see him make one", which is pretty sad.
It's been since their game against Florida state like 6 games ago. This also includes his 0-10 performance against Syracuse in their loss.
When is a white 3 pointer shooter on scholarship at Duke gonna catch a break?
/s
Man, this GIFtory is really unpopular with non-TKPC members. Not a single comment from them/s
LOL Troll.
I do enjoy how every post that hints towards moving something else behind a paywall turns into a bitchfest over not getting it for free anymore.
Us peasants coming in to find out the convo we've been missing out on.
Sorry, I couldn't help myself
When did GIFTORY become members-only content? Has it always been this way?
Na it's the first one
classic use of Comments tab
I'm confused. I'm not a member but here I am...
it was changed to free content after some hours
So no sniping at the freeloaders in future paywalled GIFtories, mmmkay?
I don't get the bacon joke. Can somebody fill me in?
Yes this please
Everyone gets free bacon if the opposing team missing two consecutive free throws in the second half. This girl has been carrying a bacon cut out at every game. Last night Duke granted everyone with free bacon
It ended up being a $5 off coupon for any smithfield product. So it might not have to be bacon...
but it's always bacon. anything else would be a waste of a $5 coupon.
yeah....Smithfield sausage has the taste of potted meat! Best on a cracker!
But who wouldn't get bacon?!
Brendan Palmer (11) looks like the child of Josh Jackson and Devin Wilson in that gif.
The Zion cam was driving me crazy. Is the guy so great that we just have to keep a camera focused on him sitting on the bench?
They did it when "Ole trip em" was suspended for the game last season too.
They should have shown him with a paper and pen taking notes on KBJ. My man was putting on a clinic.
FTFY
Found behind The Duke bench during clean up.
KBJ is really coming into his own with 5 being out. I appreciate his growth as a player and leader.
The NCAA is hurting for marketable stars with the prevelance of one and done. When they get a guy with 1) a cool name that makes it instantly recognizable to casual fans 2) a physical freak 3) that player at a top flight program, they are going to mine that puppy for all its worth. His highlight dunks, blocks, and freakishness are tailor made for Twitter and click bait.
It was odd. My son even said, "Why are we watching a guy watching a game? Is he so important that we need a 5 minuts picture-in-picture?" no son, we do not.
true, but damn...the way that man can sit on a bench and pick his nose! He's an artist!
Awesome game.
Seeing kids rush the floor was really disappointing. We're ranked. Expect to win, people!
Hell na. Only disappointing thing was the lack of injuries from kids not jumping over the railing and making the fall. The ones that did rush the court did it so carefully. I needed some rolled ankles and people landing on each other. In all seriousness, that was an upset worthy of a stormed court, it just didn't look very well executed.
I have a friend that went to UVA, they rushed the field after a win (don't know who it was, early 2000s), and guy broke his ankle this way, lol
757! your avatar is weirding me out.
I agree. We are ranked #20 and have beaten are fair share of top 10 teams. IMO we need to act like we have been there (which we have) but I know some people will disagree and just say let the kids have their fun.
To each their own, just my .02
A lot of us (myself included) did not attempt to storm the court. I think it was a lot of freshmen who have never done it before
Just because "we" have here before does not mean every fan in attendance has. Everyone should have the opportunity to rush the court (or field) at least once!
Honestly, I think this argument is very Duke-like. The amount of Duke fans I've read posts like "Look at them storming the court. What losers."
I'd rather storm the court after a win, than expect to win and lose, then justify it with a "our star player was out". Seriously, let's just take all the emotion out of the game while we're at it. Don't be Coach K stopping the students from rushing the court because "it's petty". Let the fans enjoy the win.
And that wasn't even a real court storming. Almost staged/pre-planned (which is good in multiple ways).
Duke fans stormed the court after #1 Duke beat unranked Virginia Tech once.

I love how the white shirts in the background make it look like these pictures were taken in the 80s or 90s, when people didn't wear team colors to sporting events.
Lol, Zion is just like, "get me the fuck out of college and into the NBA."
* Zion looking around Cassell**
"So this is what college girls look like? I thought they all just looked like soccer moms who were about to ask to speak to the manager. At least that is what they look like at Cameron Indoor."
Wait soccer moms you say?
Eh, Duke has some pretty fine girls as well honestly.
I legit you'd pull an ESPN and just have a bunch of random GIFs of Zion.
