Hokies Are No. 4 Seed in East Region

Virginia Tech is set to play Saint Louis in its NCAA Tournament opening round game.

[Mark Umansky]

For the third straight season, Virginia Tech is going dancing. That's a program record for consecutive NCAA Tournament trips. The #Hokies are poised to face Saint Louis. The Billikens (23-12) won the Atlantic 10 Championship. KenPom ranks Saint Louis 104th and Tech 11th. It's a Friday matchup in San Jose, California.

Historically, according to Wikipedia, number four seeds have a 79.41% winning percentage again No. 13 seeds.

UVA has a cakewalk. Great draw for them.

I would say a cakewalk until the Elite 8. I would say Tennessee is the best 2 seed and will give UVA trouble.

Agree with that, Tennessee is tough.

Some people also said that last year...

But I think you're right this year.

I'd say, we should be a solid 12 point favorite over St. Louis.

Adolph Coors, Adolphus Busch, Frederick Miller, and Sam Jim Koch walk into a bar and sit down at a table for lunch. Adolph orders a Coors Light, Adolphus requests a Bud Light, and Frederick calls for a Miller Light. Sam asks for a glass of water.

Exchanging surprised glances with Frederick and Adolph, Adolphus asks Sam Jim "I'm surprised you aren't you drinking a Boston Lager, are you feeling OK?" Sam Jim replies "Well, I thought it would be rude if I was the only one drinking a beer with lunch."

Who is Sam Koch?

Maybe he's hanging with Tim Apple.

He didn't feel he could hang with people drinking Miller Light under his real name.

Damn.. good catch.. I was halfway to going with Sam Calagione / Dogfish but then switched to Jim Koch / Sam Adams because Jim is more of a corporate big beer kind of guy even if he's producing a bunch of flavorful styles.

Damn Jose-East Region? Someone explain how the NCAA does this setup? Part of its future game matchups? But seems like a lot more "eastern cities" could have hosted a 4 seed from the East in the East region.

I also would like to know how the East region plays in Damn Jose.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Each Region has their 64/32 games spread around the country in pods of 4 teams. The region name only really applies to the 16/8 rounds.

Yes but higher seeded teams should be rewarded for being higher seeds. Why couldn't this pod be in any of the cities East of California?

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Join us in the Key Players Club

The top 16 seeds get placed in pods in order. We're seed #16, so we get hosed if we run out of closer pods. We're double hosed because there are 3 teams in our immediate geographical area that are seeded higher than we are. It works a lot better if there are high seeds spread throughout the country. The general suckiness of teams west of Kansas/Texas (excepting Gonzaga) means that teams in the East and Midwest get sent out to California as high seeds.

So you have 4 seeds to fill two "western" pods - San Jose and Salt Lake City. Gonzaga obviously fills one, the others are seeds 14, 15, and 16. That's KU, K-State, and VT. FSU is the 13 seed, which is why they're in Hartford. They got the last "close" pod location to us.

Good information.

However, it allows me to go see them on Friday, so I'm happy.

I'm trying not to get too excited and ahead of myself but we've got a favorable draw to the Sweet 16 imo. Anything can happen in these tournaments where it only takes one off night though. But with Robinson back and if the team can keep the level of gameplay we've had the last couple of months, we can have a good showing.

Glad we didn't draw Murray St like some of the predictions had us earlier today.

Ja is the real deal but they aren't a great team. Like a lot of Hokies, I like Murray state because of Beamer, Bud and CJF so I hope they do well.

May I remind you this team lost to St. Louis last year. And that was with Clarke. I'm honestly concerned about the first-round draw.

While I won't take any team lightly in this tourney....there's a reason VT's a 4 seed and St Louis a 13 seed.

Hope to see you at Double Dogs on 21st for the first game!

Hokies with a tough but winnable first weekend. Get past the Bilikens, and I like our chances against MIss State or Liberty

Per KenPom's ratings St Louis is the worst 13 seed, Miss St is the 2nd worst 5 seed, and Liberty is the worst 12th seed. Hard to ask for much better than that.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Just gotta keep Blackshear out of foul trouble..

Speaking of which, do we know from which conference the refs will be?

It's tough to watch with so many teams, so I have to rely on a lot of commute talk radio.
Had been hearing Miss St. as a good undercard that could make a run. Haven't seen them live.

@hokie_rd

Interestingly, St. Louis is the 2nd worst free throw shooting team in D1. Could be a factor if it goes down the wire.

Not underestimating St. Louis, they only lost by 4 at Houston earlier this season

Speaking of shooting, hopefully Hokies are in town for practice long enough to find their shots.

___

-What we do is, if we need that extra push, you know what we do? -Put it up to fully dipped? -Fully dipped. Exactly. It's dork magic.

The Hokies shoot 76% from the FT line. That's good for 2nd best in the ACC and 22nd best in the NCAA.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

A 4 seed. A fucking 4 seed. I can't believe it. How far we have come since I was in undergrad just a few years ago and we came in dead last in the ACC multiple times. Having a good football is awesome, but I honestly think that having a good basketball team is more fun simply because March Madness is such a unique event where crazy things happen.

We have come a long, long, long way from a 10 win ACC team getting snubbed in favor of fucking Tulsa as an at large. Yes sir.

We have come a long way from not even being good enough to play in the Big East tournament.

When I was living in West AJ, my neighbor and I used to go get our free tickets right before tip off to watch Ricky Stokes and the Hokies play. We always made a promise that if we were down by double digits at halftime, then we would leave and spend our time in more enjoyable ways.

We left at halftime...a lot.

I'm with you. Football is and always will be my #1 passion, but having a really good basketball team is such a new and fun experience that I could really get used to it. To be a #4 seed and no one is even batting an eye at that from a media perspective. In fact, I've seen a number of media personalities talking about how we could be a team to watch to knock off Duke. (On Yahoo the guy that picks his bracket in 2 minutes, and was incredibly accurate last year, in fact took us to the Final Four)

Bleacher Report has us in the Final Four in their plausible Chaos Bracket. They highlighted our ability to hit 3s, and Duke's inability to defend them.

We really havent been crazy hot shooting lately. But I am hopeful that a hybrid offense with playing through KJ (as we have w/o 5) and with 5 as the ball handler we will find our most potent offense that we have played all year. If that is the case I can really see us giving Duke a run for their money. But that means we have to hit 3s; no more 30% shooting from 3 to win that game.

Someone mentioned this earlier in the season, but I want to reiterate it: J-Rob as a distributor makes for better 3pt shooting. He is good enough to get the ball exactly where the shooter needs it so he doesn't have to change his shooting motion. Even with a wide open three, a lot of times our guys are having to corral the ball and it throws off their shooting motion/accuracy. I predict our 3pt percentage gets back to our norm with J-Rob playing (assuming he comes back to form).

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

I'm really excited to see how the offense changes with J'Rob coming back. Buzz did an excellent job of running things through KBJ when J'Rob was out. Now with both on the floor, do we see some things we haven't seen all season?

Is it basketball season yet?

I think the offense we were running before JRob got hurt should be sprinkled in to throw teams off, but we should run the offense post JRob injury the majority of the time

A) our guys are more familiar with it
B) With JRob running it I think it could be electric. We won't have NAW fumbling around and making errant passes and we won't have Bede driving the lane and stop. JRob will take those drives to the rack or the defense will have to collapse on him leaving guys open everywhere.

Agree with B. Bede improved his ball play but was still never a threat to actually take it to the hoop. JRob will make teams pay for not collapsing.

I think this could be dynamic depending on JRob's capability for minutes. Hoping it doesn't ruin the rhythm and flow we have, but helps us avoid the long dead stretches we've become accustomed to.

Not to mention better passing by JRob right to where the shooters want to catch it, so their shooting percentages go up.

We're going to shoot a lot better than we have the past few weeks.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

If we win the whole thing..Does Buzz get a statue beside Beamer?

Yes. After year 29 (negotiable).

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

If we are going to get that first NCAA win, this is the game for it. Saint Louis is only win by getting hot and winning the A10 tournament. They were never going to be selected as an at large.

You're not wrong, but this also could also be viewed as "they are currently hot and are therefore, more dangerous than if they had been an at-large caliber team that limped into the tourney".

Yep. From this point forward, it isn't who you've beaten or lost to, but who's hot enough to win out. Seeding aside, we're all 0-0 now.

I am like 100 years old and have been doing brackets since when they were invented, and for years I subscribed to the "pick the team that won their tournament" approach. I don't have data to back it up, and am too lazy to do the research. However I can tell you, that approach does NOT work. It busted my bracket for years before I stopped doing it.

In Bud we trust

UVa busted everyone's bracket last year.

He did open with this: "...nobody except the NCAA and maybe Buzz Williams at Virginia Tech understands the NET..." Talked for a few minutes with Rece Davis about Buzz gaming the NET system (calling time out with 11 secs left down by ten "We get a % point if we lose by less than 10")

I think this overlooks LSU not having their coach, but Maryland may be such a head case of a team that they can't take advantage. Beating UVa for a Natty in basketball might cause UVa to disband their entire Athletic Department.

Beating UVa in the national championship game might cause me to spontaneously explode.

There was a discussion on Reddit about Duke playing UNC in the finals (it's almost happened in the past) both teams fans mutually agreed that they would never want that. It's not worth it and its an end all be all to a rivalry. Now I know we're no where near as historic of a basketball rivalry but there's a lot on the line there, that and it'd be a 4v1 seed so the optics wouldn't be near as bad.
