The Hokies are taking the JUCO route. On the recruiting trail that is. Virginia Tech is scouring junior colleges to plug gaps on its depth chart, and defensive tackle has big holes to fill. Redshirt senior Ricky Walker, Tech's bell cow, is set to play his final game in maroon and orange, and so is fellow senior and DL fixture Vinny Mihota. Outside of rising junior Jarrod Hewitt (8 starts), Tech is left with a hodgepodge of options at defensive tackle.
Enter Jones County defensive tackle DaShawn Crawford. The current Troy commitment took an official visit to Tech last weekend and left with an offer in-hand.
"It was amazing," said Crawford. "The campus was beautiful."
Crawford has two years of eligibility remaining and was a full qualifier out of Bay Springs HS (Mississippi). Academic issues common with JUCO recruitments should not present an issue.
"Coming out of high school I was an undersized kid, no one offered me," said Crawford.
