Virginia Tech football head coach Frank Beamer spoke with ESPN's Andrea Adelson in a short conversation about his improved health after throat surgery, the logistics of the Military Bowl coaching arrangement and the expectations for the Hokies' upcoming season. The last topic is the most interesting as it's been the least discussed by Frank.
Beamer knows full well seven- and eight-win seasons are unacceptable after the standard that he set. He hears all the chatter, so you better believe he puts pressure on himself to get the Hokies back.
"I figured out our alumni and our supporters really want to do that," Beamer said with a smile. "But the other side of it is understanding that it's tough to do -- but it's doable. We've been there and I think we're closer to where it was when we were getting there than we have been in some years. We've gone through three years there where we haven't been as good as we need to be, but I think we're getting close to being back."
The spring game headlined by the offense, the returning top-end playmakers on defense and the seemingly now mature young talent Tech's experienced growing pains with has left fans and even some media expecting a more vintage Virginia Tech squad this season. Frank Beamer's never been overly open with the media. He's a master of managing a press conference, and dances around the highs and lows of a season with the increasingly lost art of coach speak.
7-6, 8-5 and 7-6 seasons do not satisfy the expectations of the Virginia Tech football program, and I don't think the overall big picture is lost on Beamer.
"I think that's part of dealing with being a college football coach or any football coach. You've got to produce. That's the name of the game."

First post? UH THE PRESSURE....UH .... UH.... BANANA HAMMOCK! Fuuuuu.....
The dork magic is strong with this one
I went full dork....I didn't learn my lesson from the wise master on these things.
Remind me to kick you out of the carpool during the Zombie Apocalypse.
"Go Hokies" would have been fine....
There's no stopping the hype train.
This is as close as we're gonna get to Beamer saying "Yeah we sucked the last 3 years, but we got our shit together and we're gonna be back next season baby".
I read this and I'm all:
Damn, is it September yet??
Thanks for the reminder...
My reaction when I remember it's still only May and football season is still 4 months away...
wah da ....?
Wizard of Oz character.
I believe it's an oompa loompa (sp?) from willy wonka and the chocolate factory
What stands out here is that Frank is a master who dances.
I'll see your Beamer dance and raise you this one:
Top one's my favorite. Kyle Fuller's expression is priceless.
Kyle Fuller's reaction is priceless in this one.
Merengue Frank with Sombrero.. priceless
DON'T STEP ON FRANK'S FEET!!
Put this one on the scoreboard after a victory over anOSU. Lane will roar!
I would vote for that. Anyone got some pull with the scoreboard operator?
Anyone else cringe?
What, you didn't know he was taking a shot at all the "U" fans .They should have added /S after that quote silly reporters.
No, he said, I THINK we are GETTING CLOSE to being back. Not, We will be back to form this year or I think we'll have 10 wins this season.
It says to me that he believes we have the ability to be close to 10 wins and doesn't put it out of the realm with who he has and what he has seen in the offseason. I don't think there is anything wrong with his assessment.
Agreed. Not cringe worthy. Just coach speak at being cautiously optimistic. Give a thought while taking it back at the same time. Classic Beamer.
I think you missed it..lol.
I just pulled my thumb out of my mouth and got out of the fetal position.
Seeing the photo makes me think:
Beamer we love you... Don't give in to the Bobby Bowden staw hat.... IT'S A TRAP!
Unless it's the Nick Saban straw hat...then I'm ok with it!
To me that will always be the Torrian Gray straw hat.
Will this be the field-position Frank or the go-for-the-jugular Frank we see this season who lights a fire under his team's arse? I'm betting if we come out flat against OSU he's going to feel the heat himself real soon after.
you may be right. I really hope poeple don't confuse a loss to OSU with coming out flat though. OSU is going to make a lot of teams look like they came out flat this year. I think how we respond 5 days later against Furman is going to be a pretty good indicator of whether Frank will feel some heat or not
Reasonable comment. If we spot OSU 17 fluke points like we did against Boise I'm going to have a strong feeling of deja-vu at that moment. That said, some fans on the elevenwarriors website were saying they weren't even going to bring their punter to Blacksburg. I know it's just fans chattering, but I wish Beamer and Loeffler would adopt that as a mantra drilling that into the heads of their offense. "We don't need no stinkin' punter" as only first downs and touchdowns are acceptable.
Hell I heard we were not dressing AJ and its a home game!
I never realized the full extent of Frank's surgery, having to relearn to talk? Better yet be a coach?
What a troop. I freakin' love CFB.
