OH YEAH!

What was it like going through camp even though you didn't make it on the squad (NFL)? What are your thoughts on the new coaching staff?

In that ACC championship game where you had the hot hand, what was the play call that you snag the ball and raced up for a touchdown while leaving the safety looking for his jockstrap?

It was a dream come true experience, with many highs/lows and adversity. I am better because of that time and got to know many quality people.

Big fan of the new coaching staff although I do not know many of them personally. The additions that they made recently I think will pay big dividends.

That route in the ACC is actually something that we ran a couple weeks before at Miami as well. Its a basic rub route but teams can have a hard time passing coverage and it allowed for me often times to sneak out the backside. Helps when you have playmakers all around that draw focus, like i did.

That was a phenomenal championship game and I thoroughly enjoyed watching FSU getting dismantled thoroughly.

I also recall your senior year, you went to a kid's house in Lexington, all dressed up in your uniform. Have you kept in touch with the family since that day?

Pie can be made from an almost infinite number of fillings. Pie is made from a small handful of ingredients that people then flavor to taste like other things. Example coconut cake is just white cake with flavoring, coconut pie is made with actual coconut. Chocolate cake is cake adding chocolate powder at best. I've had 3/4 different chocolate pies made with everything from chocolate mouse to chocolate pudding to just melted chocolate. Think about pies, sweet, savory, tart the entire flavor and filling spectrum is our canvas.

Traditionally, after a pie was baked in the hot oven, it would be placed on the windowsill of the kitchen to cool off before serving. While there, though, the pie had to be vigilantly watched so hungry people (traditionally homeless people or unruly children) wouldn't snatch it.

Popular characters from "The Little Rascals" and "O Brother! Where Art Thou?" to The Simpsons and Yogi Bear have stolen pies off of windowsills. People have even done performative art experiments about pie stealing. In 2011, an open case was filed against a pie-snatcher in Cedar Rapids, Michigan

Who the FUCK is choosing coconut pie or cake? I don't have a problem with coconut in general, and some of that stuff is good on occasion like a carrot cake. Carrot cake is great sometimes, but overall not what I'm looking for when talking a cake.

Also this is alot of fun. Especially cause Ice Cream is what I pick if we are talking homemade deserts.

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

Coconut cake has actual coconut in it, and not just the nasty coconut shreds. In fact, the top search results that I found for coconut cake and coconut pie share many key ingredients, and I suspect the cake would have more coconut flavor for you weirdos that enjoy the taste of coconut due to the addition of coconut extract.

I dislike coconut though, so I'll be over here with my chocolate cake that has become the base for countless cupcake flavor profiles, with s'mores being my current fave ๐Ÿคค

I agree on principle about coconut. However whatever the Girl Scouts have magically done to it in Samoa's has rendered it delicious.

Fact.

ANOTHER ONE FOR TEAM CAKE BABY

What was going through your mind when you were streaking the sideline against Nebraska?

Exactly what I had in mind here... give us a walk through of that play from your perspective..

Having a conversation with you is like a Martian talking to a Fungo.

#JustinTime

I was at VT for some good football years (08-12). This had to be the most out of control moment I witnessed. We had a terrible view of the play, but there was absolute pandemonium in North when this happened.

It was the only game i won the lottery to. I was at VT from 09-12, so we saw the same football. This game, I remember coming home and my roommate who didn't go said that all he could hear during the play was essentially static because of how loud the crowd noise was.

Let's talk Nebraska. This will cover a few posts above - thanks for the questions. So what was going through my mind? "Don't get caught!"...and looked what happened.

Actually the probability of me getting that ball wasn't great based on the pre-snap call. I had a basic out route at 9 yds that converted to a "go" vs. a cover 2 shell, which is what they came out with. At that point my goal is to keep the safety towards the hash and grab his attention while staying alive. He bit on a fake by TY and 5 made an amazing throw - the vision to see me open by TY is next level.

I can't thank 5 and 11 enough for making that play at the end to bail me out!

I was in the East stands that season. While Tyrod was scrambling, I was locked in on him and didn't see you streaking down the sideline. When Tyrod threw the ball I screamed "WHO ARE YOU THROWING IT TO? --- OH MY GODDD HE'S OPEN"

One of my favorite memories as a student.

Well to be honest, I can't thank you enough for so many great memories that I have watching VT football in my undergrad years. I think you even signed one of my jerseys that I need to display with a bunch of other guys from the team and of course Coach Beamer.

Also, if you didn't get caught, we wouldn't have gotten to see Tyrod's true magic on the TD pass after that.

Thanks!

I remember being at the in-laws' house for that game. HokieEnginerd and I were watching. We started screaming and going nuts with your catch and the game winner. His mom was very concerned that something was drastically wrong, and thinking that she was going to have to call 911 for one or both of us.

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

Did you catch that ball?

Edit: I see this was already addressed in your post, carry on.

No doubt in my mind, Henry. Thanks for the question bud!

Thanks for doing this Danny!

Question: loudest game during your time at Tech? Also, I've always wondered if once the offense gets to the sideline, how tough is it to hear the coaches trying to talk to yall with the crowd?

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

2011 Miami game would be my guess.

Happy to do it friend, thanks for the question.

Loudest game was probably Miami my senior year. Enter Sandman came on and you guys are just nuts.

The crowd noise can certainly be an issue on the road. When you are backed up with a student section yelling behind you, it gets loud. However, we practice for those situations and I always loved a loud crowd on on the road.

What was your most memorable punt?

Thanks for the punter question Joel! My first punt at UVa, backed up in the end zone.

We knew you caught that ball!!!

Let's go!

HOKIES!!!!

I'm on a few text chains with guys i played with. On a more regular basis its my roommates (Drager, Lanier, Nosal) Miss the guys and wish i got to see them more.

Gotten any good tips from Nosal?

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Just the tip. Fingertip, that is.

Man I was with the MVs at the Sugar Bowl and had a front row seat to see you CATCH THAT BALL!!!!!!!!

What did it feel like making that catch against Nebraska in 09? I didn't have a voice the rest of that weekend ๐Ÿ˜…

Gonna drink. Next question, do you have any memories of the rain game against Miami in '09?

Let's go MV's

A man of class and refinement

Walk us through your favorite pass play-
1) What was your route? Was there an adjustment at the line of scrimmage based on the coverage?
2) What was the structure of the other receivers routes, and did they facilitate you getting open (ie rubbing off a crossing route to work back against the flow ala FSU ACCG in 2010?)
3) What coverages did it work best against?

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Great questions. Generally speaking anything that breaks at 12-15 yds is great because I can dig, curl, comeback, post, post n out etc. We had many routes, especially in the slot that we would have optionality based on the coverage post snap. I always loved getting man coverage, its 1v1 and you are on an island.

I'll say this about the WR's I played with. They are amazing, selfless ball players. What made us work so well is that I could trust them just as much to block for me as I could trust them running that crossing route vs FSU. It wasn't about the stat line for us, it was about making each other better and doing whatever it took to make sure we had success as a team.

Curious about Episcopal experience. Did you seek to go play ball there or recruited? Everyone I know that went to boarding school, went to a rural one (Blue Ridge, Woodberry Forest, Miller, Oak Hill). How was the boarding school lifestyle in metro area like Alexandria? Do you think you would have reached same level of football success if you had played at Rockbridge HS?

Thanks

There's no glory in practice and lifting but without practice and lifting, there will be no glory!

Upvote for this one. Also, any insight why Virginia Tech struggles so much to get players our of Episcopal? It seems like, present company excluded, a lot of Episcopal HS players end up in the Big10.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

We have good players and good young men coming out of EHS. I say keep at it, I'd sure love to see more in Blacksburg.

Thanks Coach C for the question. I loved my time at EHS and it wasn't about going to just play football. My older brother went there has loved his experience so for me it was an academic and athletic opportunity to learn right in the middle of DC. Many factors went into that decision and I was very much into playing lacrosse as well - - we played in one of the best HS leagues in the country for lacrosse. I learned a lot of great lessons living 3 hrs away from home at 16 - - I call some of my teachers my closest friends to this day. It was a great experience. And you have to remember back then there wasn't a lot of football recruiting coming out of the VA private leagues.
Bud Foster recruited me and stood on the table for me when not many others would - - I think what has set VT apart has been their ability to find talent in not so obvious places and I benefitted from that.

Some of the younger TKPers may forget that you also served as the punter in part of your senior season. Walk us through how that came about. Where you punting in practice the full season, so you could be ready if Scott Demler couldn't go? How did you feel that being on the punt team impacted, if any, your offensive productivity?

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Another good question. So as you probably remember I did some punting in the spring, and coach knew I was serious about it. He was serious about it. But once we got into the season it was best for me to focus at WR and Demler was a very good punter. I continued to rep throughout the fall and even got some live reps in practice as the season went along.

Actually a great story is that I was warming up on the 50 yd line at UVa my senior year when Coach Beamer came over and said "Hitting them pretty well today. We are going to start you at punter, how's that sound". So not until that moment did I know I was going to punt. Told Coach I was ready and the rest is history.

I remember when Danny said he would grab a single bar helmet to prove he was serious about being a punter. In the last ACCCG, Kirk Herbsreit was going on about how he has never seen someone being a wise receiver, punter, and punt returner in one game.

Final question- how is the Virginia Tech program brand around Pittsburgh. Is there an opportunity to better establish the Hokies recruiting footprint in that talent-rich area? I can't think of the Hokies getting a player from that area since Shai Mckenzie. My memory may be escaping me though.

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

I see this question below as well. The Michigan punt was all on me. I had the option to run or punt and I clearly made a poor decision, wish I could have that one back.

2008-2011 was a great run for the Hokies that saw us win 42 games (43 when your TD catch is correctly called). Which season meant the most to you, personally? Which one did you have the most fun? Which one was the most frustrating?

Which guys on the team over your four years were the out and out leaders of the locker room?

Which guys did you get to see make the biggest maturation/evolutions as people or football players?

The 10 win streak, 2004-2011, was marked by a tendency for the Hokies find that extra something and win the close games, a trend that has gone largely the opposite way over the next eight seasons. Do you think this has more to do with talent, and/or is it a locker room culture/mindset that has to be cultivated and can quickly fade?

Do you still keep in contact with any of the coaches, and if so, who?

Lots of good stuff here, Chris.

Season that is most special for me is 2010. We were 0-2 with our backs against the wall. Amazing leadership and focus in that locker room allowed us to get to an ACC Championship and Orange Bowl opportunity. I'm proud of that.

I'll tackle the next two questions in one. Watching my recruiting class over four years was truly rewarding. We all came a long way and grew as people and players.

Winning 10 games is hard and you are right many of those 10 each year were close. It's hard to win football games in the ACC. We have talent, we have great coaches...I think we have some special seasons in store.

The good thing for me is that VT plays at Pitt every other year. That has been a great opportunity for me to see some past players and coaches. I was able to see coach Beamer at ODU last year, that was special.

Have jersey's, rings, helmet...the good stuff.

Went to the VT/Pitt game @ Heinz in 2016. Gotta believe it's hard to play in a stadium with only about 15,000 in attendance like it was that night! It was a very salty night for Narduzzi as all the Hokie receivers got open so often

And thanks for hanging out with us. You're one of my all-time favorite Hokies. Can't tell you how many times I was screaming "hit Danny, he's open!" in my time at Tech.

Thanks VTGuitarMan, I appreciate your kind words. Acoustic or electric?

Anything at West End.

If it's off campus now we are talking Cabo, Gillies brunch or Green's.

Acoustic or electric?

Both, though I favor a Fender Strat that I've had for over 20 years. I do have a soft spot for my 12-string Takamine acoustic, though.

Good stuff

West End is the best, it's true. I worked there the whole time I was in school, serving up omelettes during Sunday brunch. I may have even cooked up an omelette for you once or twice if brunch at West End was your thing ๐Ÿ˜

Ah man I'm all nostalgic now thinking about the good old days. No questions from me, just going to go cry a little.

Thank you for being an awesome Hokie and giving us some great memories.

I'm not crying you're crying...

You da man, thanks vtandy.

What away stadium were you most excited to play in?

Nebraska was great - the fans were so nice.

Fedex was unforgettable.

Any of those at night on the road were live.

I loved Nebraska, we were out by the buses for an hour after the game to cheer everyone on.

In 2011, at the VT/UVA game ("38-0, bro"), I am fairly confident I ran into your family. They were wearing homemade Danny Coale shirts & I had on my #19 jersey (because the NCAA doesn't allow us to wear jerseys of current players).

Anyway, we tried to high five/fist bump, but it ended up like this:

anyway, no real question... just one of my favorite awkward encounters.

I didnt try to first bump, but I meet them at Maryland. Same deal, # 19 jerseys.

That's too funny, can't wait to tell them. Hugs for all next time!

What's your favorite Frank Beamer story?

Better question: what's you're favorite Lester Karlin story???

EDIT: looks like two people beat me to it below

Twitter me

Joe!

Committing to Coach Beamer in his office was awesome, he gave me a huge hug.

Coach's demeanor after a loss was always uplifting. He always complimented the effort even if the execution wasn't there. He was a builder and amazing motivator.

My favorite story I mentioned above. We are sitting there on the 50 yd line warming up and he told me I was going to start at punter. News to me but he had confidence which gave me confidence. I owe a lot to that guy.

Thank you for doing this, you are on my all-time favorite Hokies.

Do you think college footballs fans put too much emphasis on recruiting rankings? I believe you were a Rivals "two-star" recruit back in high school. What it like as a high schooler to sign with a team and dumbasses on message boards are writing things to the effect of "We missed on all WR targets, I guess we have to settle for Danny Coale?"

Thanks for comment and sorry I missed this. I meant to respond. I don't put much weight in stars, I get it though. When foster tells me "I don't care who has offered you" it's refreshing because everyone else was asking "who has offered you". I won't lie I read a few negative posts early in my day but that's ok I had always had confidence in myself!

HE'S BACK

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

It doesn't take long to learn that TKP is always better than work!

Shiit if my bosses knew/cared how much time I spent on TKP my salary would be halved.

TKP if Coale becomes a regular:

Not shocked Coale successfully executed a comeback route.

When foster tells me "I don't care who has offered you" it's refreshing because everyone else was asking "who has offered you".

When you don't want to disagree with Hokie legends but you've been talking shit about the 2019 class

Was it a pain to get your name legally changed from "open" back to "Danny Coale" after wrapping up your stint with the Hokies?

Favorite Coach Gentry story?

Also who had better hair: Brent Bowden or 2008 Chris Drager?

Gobble Till You Wobble

Chris Drager by a landslide.

His speech at half time of ECU my r-freshman year was one for the books. My favorite Coach G quote was "If the bar ain't bendin, you're just pretendin".

What's the most almost-arrested you've ever been?

I fortunately do not have a good answer for this.

LoL - this is a good answer to that.

HTHokie93

What's your favorite Lester story? For those who don't know Lester was the head equipment manager since before Hite joined the staff I think. He is a hilarious person.

I don't have enough time for all of the Lester stories. I oddly find myself yelling "one pair of socks" at my kids...

Who was your least favorite ACC opponent during your time playing and why?

Goal was to win the ACC so I cared about them all!

First just a comment. My husband and I were just talking about all the bad calls we have seen over the years (my game attendance started in 1990 at the age of 4, he only started in 2003), that Michigan catch is the only one that still makes me angry all this time later.

As to a question, how is the Sugar Bowl and New Orleans from a player perspective? As a fan, it's my favorite one to attend.

Thanks for the comment, still makes me angry too!

Sugar Bowl was very cool and I feel very fortunate to have had the experience.

Um. Hello spirit animal.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

This is you.

Can confirm. This is actually him rn.

See??? This is why rails are a bad thing. You make things awkward on TKP.

Now he is going to be completely unbarable to those of us who know him in person....

Flippin, how are you going to live with him now that his spirit animal has given him this ego boost?

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

I don't know what you're talking about. He's walking around the house like this now:

Yeah I can totally see him doing that too.

First tailgate at Lot 18:

"Hey, good to see you again. Did you hear Danny Coale loves my username?"

"Did you see Danny Coale liked my username?"

"Danny Coale loves my TKP handle."

...on repeat

...all season long

...for the next five seasons.

RIP Flippin's sanity.

If you play it, they will win.

Nah, he hasn't mentioned it since he casually popped into the bedroom last night while I was trying to sleep to see if I had caught up on the thread recently.

Oh, great! He's bottling it up to explode like a powder keg with pride at the first tailgate.

...for the next five seasons.

May need to adjust this timeline.

Great question. I'll steal one from Beamer..."Take care of the little things and the big things will come"

What do you miss the most from your time at VT?

Hokie fan | W&M grad

I miss the lockeroom. I miss the energy in Lane. The VT summers preparing for the season. The people.

Comment first: loved watching you play when I was at Tech. My fiancee was able to somehow get me a #19 jersey made and I wear it proudly at every home game! I've also made sure that everyone around my neighborhood knows the truth by naming the WiFi "Danny_Coale_Caught_The_Ball".

Question: Favorite place to go downtown when you were at Tech?

Thanks for the comment, that means a lot to me.

Apparently not there anymore but Poor Billy's.

We saw that the last time we were in Blacksburg. Not sure why it went under but it's too bad.

Has anyone asked what his almost been arrested moment was?

Fearing the response to this question, Joe quickly called an end to the AMA. He doesn't need you rage-quitting right now.

If you're not sure if my comment warrants a "/s", it probably does.

Shout out to Danny for taking the time, and extra time, with all of us tonight. Thank you again.

Champion on the field and TKP...is there anything the man can't do? (besides score against Nebraska)

Thanks Joe, y'all are fun. Thanks for the questions, comments and kind words. Go Hokies.

Two of my favorite Hokie players, Danny Coale on offense and Cody Grimm on D. Without DC my signature wouldn't be possible. I was in the the West Stands vs Nebraska and when TT threw that bomb it looked like it was coming straight at me in slow mo. The pandemonium that ensued was epic. I swear someone in our section got so excited they threw a baby up two rows.

I'm sad I missed this AMA but reading through it looks like everyone hit the important questions. You guys didn't disappoint. But if you're still wide open for questions, who were the hardest hitters on the VT defense?

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

Two of my favorite Hokie players, Danny Coale on offense and Cody Grimm on D.

Aren't they the same person? I mean, have you ever seen them in the same place at the same time?

We put the K in Kwality

Tyrod did it Mikey, Tyrod did it!!

It is unpossible for Danny Coale to get hit because he's wide open. A meteor may strike Blacksburg but it wouldn't get him because he is wide open.

Somehow I missed this shit. And yes you caught the ball.

Sorry I missed this one. Oh well. Danny Coale is an absolute Hokie Legend.

How the flip did I miss Danny Coale's AMA?

Thanks for giving 7/11 a run for their money, Mr. Open!

If you play it, they will win.

I'm right there with you. Of course, I'm just not around here much after 6pm.

Danny, if you feel the urge to check back on your thread, just... thanks. My youngest son was a HUGE fan. He was just getting into Lax when he was 9, and when he found out that you were also a Lax Bro, that sealed the deal. I was actually trying to get him away from the TV in 2009 for practice, and he made us stay to watch, hope and/or pray that Tyrod had one last trick in his bag. The rest is history and one of the great moments in Hokie Lore.

Best of luck in your and your family's pursuits. And also, thanks for taking the time to visit with this ragtag bunch of die-hards.

Leonard. Duh.

This was a great read and BTW Nutty Bars were my go to snack for all nighters

Nutty Bar! Wow.

Hokies, Local Soccer, AFC Ajax, Ravens

Danny, sorry I missed your AMA, but just to be clear:

We all know it was a CATCH!

Thanks for coming by and supporting the site and the fans.

Joe, can Danny come back and play? This thread has taken an odd turn and he's the only one that can get it back in track.

Yes I have commented on the coconut conundrum, I'm only human

I think it's just a culture thing with coconut. I grew up on curries where coconut was an important ingredient. Coconut went well with desserts. I dunno why people be whining.

Edit: Y'all gotta try some Goan coconut curry sauce with chicken (Trader Joes). Goes well on top of rice with some veggies. Thank me later.

I think my dislike of coconut came from the dry ass shredded coconut that people put on terrible deserts. I actually don't HATE it but if I have ANY other option, I will be getting something else.

I'm in the same boat. I actually love using coconut oil and coconut milk when cooking. I just hate the terrible shredded crap that just completely ruins perfectly good deserts and candy.

Basing a hatred of coconut on that sugared, sulfured stuff is like watching the 0-0 WF game and going on a tirade about how terrible a sport college football is.

I think this is exactly my problem with coconut. I don't like it either. If I ever get stranded on a desert island I hope it has mango trees instead.

Then what the hell are you going to put the lime in?

If you play it, they will win.

But you must disclose the location of this desert isle with PBR.

My mother made me sit and eat a desert with coconut flakes that made me gag every time I try to take a bite of it. Since then, whenever coconut flake is involved, I am not touching that desert or treat, period.

Coconut milk and flour is fine as the wife and I use it in our cooking as we work to eliminate diary from our diet.

Coconut is the shit. Coconut water, coconut milk, curry, candies... Everything. I love it all.

Good Lord. This thread devolved into an argument about coconut...and that's why I love this website. DCWilson, take some damned notes. This is what a hijacked TKP thread is supposed to look like.

You're welcome.

Poor Danny Coale catches a ball and they don't count it and now he gets an AMA thread and it is taken over by Coconut Crazies.

This was meant to be in reply to the above comment. Coffee be with me.

ESPN. The coverage is excellent, you'd be surprised at how much you can pick up.

Although the thread keeps getting bumped which isn't a bad thing. I was just inspired to eat samoas while watching Danny Coale highlights on YouTube.

I was friends with Danny's now wife in college and we lived in the same apartment complex. Danny started to hang out with us a little bit (as much a a star wife receiver on a good football team could).

We would get a couple cocktails in us and force Danny to play catch with us in the parking lot. He played along every single time.
I imagine he didn't come to his girlfriends Apartment to throw footballs at drunk dumbasses but he never turned us down.

In conclusion he is a pretty cool dude.

This is a fantastic typo or excellent subtle wordplay

Either way it's not getting edited.

sounds like what you get when you run the word "groom" through google translate into swahili and back to english
