Love me a GIFTORY first thing Monday morning! Thanks Joe.

Great way to start a Monday morning. And it is going to be a long day I am afraid.

In addition to the Hoffman flop, I actually thought Hooker's jump over (almost) no one and then the twisting fall into the end zone had some decent comedy material in it too.

**3rd and 6. They got a TFL and then blew it by pushing the biggest guy on the field.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it was 3rd and 1. The line judge has the spot (forward progress).

Hoffman had to change his number (76 to 77). Did his jersey get shredded?

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

Darrisaw is 77. Hoff still 76. CD77 was celebrating.

I didn't watch the game. Can someone explain what's going on in the next to last gif? Thanks.

Find 77, watch nearby for Hoffman's flop when Louisville's 11 pushes him.

Thanks! I looked and looked before posting earlier and never saw that just the flag get thrown. Not sure how I missed it. Oscar worthy.

#11 smacked Hoffman in the facemask (not overly hard) and Hoffman sold it by going down. The official threw a flag for unsportsmanlike conduct on #11.

In short: a critical end of game drive, looking at 3rd and short. Tensions running high, Hoffman holds his block a little long after the whistle, hands up into the pads of #11. The defensive player gets frustrated, pushes Brock, and Brock...flippity-flops like a pro.

15 yards, first down, soon to be 6. Gave us the extra cushion we needed to hang on.

If it ain't orange, it better be maroon...and if it ain't maroon, it better be soon!

You could have made a whole giftory of Dax cheering.

He's not riding the bench; he's spinning the towel and revving the team. It's being part of the team on and off the field.

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

I really do like Dax, but he's been off this year. I'd rather see him on the sideline motivating than on the field missing tackles.

He was always right there for a big catch, so much so I was worried the half time adjustment for UofL was cover the reciever #4 is closest to.

How many extra yards do you think Herbert gets over an average replacement running back? He doesn't seem that imposing, but is always making the free man miss or just running past people.

Tyrod’s Tailor

The offensive line is great and gets their credit but Herbert more times than not makes the unblocked man miss. I find myself saying this multiple times per game where he gets 4-8+ yards where our running backs from the last eight or nine years usually get 1-2 yards. It's a nice luxury to have.

Yeah I agree, it seems like a lot of our more recent RBs would've been much more likely to go down to to first contact because they couldn't make them miss (or lacked the vision to see a way around contact as new lanes open up). Plays like the ones above with him bouncing around the outside with a spin move or selling the defender with a lean before breaking outside and making the defender slip are both plays that I think get stopped for minimal/no gain in the past.

The offensive line is great

In many of the gifs here and during the entire game, the wall they interior OL makes is some beautiful $#!t to behold.

In technical terms: a lot. It seems like every other run he's got an extra 8 or so yards off of some should-have-been tackle that he slipped away from.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

Per Dane Brugler at The Athletic, prior to Saturday's game, Herbert was averaging 5.4 yards after contact. Over 60 percent of his total rushing yards come after contact.

Herbert: "Get Off Me!"

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

Three kids between 15 and 10. This was my life.

The was one play on Saturday where there was a defender in the hole immediately, there seemed to be NO wiggle room, and any rb we've had since David Wilson would have lost 3 on the play. We gained like 5-8 yards because Herbert just... phased through a man.

Not sure a man phasing through another man is altogether legal in Kentucky.

He bounces off tacklers and pulls tacklers down the field for extra yards after initial contact. He's very good.

JP

That hand off to Herbert for a touchdown at the end of the game was a brilliantly timed play call. Tech had just gotten them with a few sweeps and then you go with an action off of that to get Herbert 1 on 1 against the backside defender.

It's Time to go to Work

Yup, great to see how hard the defense bit on Turner coming across on the sweep.

I guess since they got burned by Turner for a TD earlier they didn't want that to happen again. ;)

I have to give Cornelsen props for that play call. It seemed to me during the game that the UL defenders were keying on Herbert and viewing him as the biggest offensive threat. The jet sweep action to Turner totally drew their eyes away from Herbert and had them watching the Hooker/Turner exchange while leaning towards the boundary side of the play. Herbert was freed from the defense's attention and made the most of the opportunity back to the field side. Nice subtle trickeration there Coach Corn.

VTCC '86 Delta Company, Hokie in Peru, Former Naval Aviator, Former FBISA, Forever married to my VT87 girl. Go VT!

That's the utterly maddening thing about Cornelson. He'll call an amazing series or two and then he just derps his way through the next one or two. I don't know how much of it is the cat-and-mouse offense v. defense, but sometimes it feels like he steps out to take a piss and accidentally leaves a playbook on the "use this play" button.

Finally someone gets what I have been saying/thinking the past 4 years! He's good, but sometimes it seems he doesn't understand or have the feel of the game/momentum several times throughout a game. Herbert is killing it, and then no carries for 2 series and we go 3 and out. Not rocket science!

PDXHokie

Many of the effective Herbert plays are built off of other plays so the defense cannot key in on him. Aside from that, he needs a breather from time to time.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

It's not so much that, it's the "they've stopped this play the last 2 downs, it HAS to work this time" or the "it's 3rd & 20 so let's give up and just run the ball", or my personal favorite "3rd and 1 so let's air it outtttttt!".

If I can sit on my couch and call out the play then I know the DC for the other team who's been looking at tape for the past week can do the same thing.

Props to James Mitchell as well on recovering those first two onside kicks. I feel like it was the first one where he was running backwards and snagged it with one hand with Louisville players coming fast behind him. He gets my vote for #25 this week.

It is a little disturbing that Hoffman disappears completely after flopping. He's just...not there.
Play of the game and magic trick.

Doing better and better.

I was going to comment on the same thing.

I've spent way too long staring at the GIF trying to figure out how he just disappears

He's partially covered by #69(nice) and #74. You can briefly see his foot in the air where he continued tumbling for dramatic effect lol.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

I can kind of see it now. Looks like he rolls towards the 45 yard line and towards the end of the GIF you can see him start to get to his feet around the 43 yard line

It's always darkest before the dawn ~ Thomas Fuller

I'd like to think he was doing something like this to really sell it:

Did not realize how badly UL's linebackers overplayed the jet sweep motion on Herbert's TD run. Middle LB didn't know Herbert had the ball until Herbert was already past him.

The jet sweep is a pathway to many play designs some consider to be... unnatural.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

I kept watching the boundary linebacker.... Tre gets to the sideline and starts chop steps with no one near him, and the LB keeps watching him.

Herbert is practically past the LBs by the time that guy even looks to see where the ball really went.

Dax is a true team player, you have to give him that. I hope he can figure out the mental part of the game to channel that energy (and his 4* recruit body) into opposing running backs.

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Jet Sweep

It took me multiple viewings of the Herbert TD GIF to realize that #1 comes flying up on a safety blitz, tries to close on Herbert and comes away with nothing but his towel. Guess he knew it was time to hit the showers.

Impressively, that's not Herbert. That's Blackshear.

I didn't realize it during the game.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

Blackshear is going to be a problem next year, assuming KH moves on.

...A problem for the rest of the ACC that is. In his pre-game radio interview with Burnop, Blackshear sounded like a really grounded, intelligent dude who mostly misses his family back home. We and the team need to keep showing him the VT Fam love to help him out.

KH is a grad transfer and only had one year to play. He's gone after this year.

RB came in with two years so he'll be our RB1 next year assuming he doesn't try and transfer again.

Since this year doesn't count towards eligibility, KH could return if he wants to. I am assuming he will test the waters in the draft.

I may or may not have ended this early to make it look like he was lowering his shoulder to give 17 the same treatment

This reminds me of Daren Evans steamrolling the Maryland defensive player back in 2008. IMHO, Daren Evans was one of our most unappreciated players during an era when we were consistently bringing in star running backs.

On that last TD, they run blitz the Free specifically to stop that counter and Herbert just shakes and takes off.
