Making some fresh salsa for the first time for the game. We have pounds and pounds and pounds of tomatoes that my wife grew in the town garden and that were given to her by other people there who also grew pounds and pounds and pounds of them. Also have some cilantro leftover from the veggie tacos I made earlier this week. Lots of toasted tomato sandwiches already eaten and I'll be making stew with more of the diced tomatoes tomorrow. Stew is also for some of the pounds and pounds of carrots she grew. Man, I'm glad she stayed with a single plot and did not get a double. We'd be buried alive in tomatoes and carrots.
Got to get her to expand the selection rather than the space. If you are making salsa, need to get her into peppers, onions, and garlic. Then you aren't inundated with one and can flex your options on what to make.
She tried growing several things. Some did really well - carrots and green beans - some did pretty well - tomatoes and peas - and some did poorly - peppers, squash and zucchini. Think we got about 3 peppers and 1 or 2 of squash or zucchini. Most tomatoes actually came from a guy there who said his wife was going to kill him if he brought any more tomatoes home, so he was giving away big bags of them to people. I was hoping she would do some cilantro and hot peppers next year. Will see.
Habanero peppers are a beautiful plant that's easy to grow; bushy, dark green waxy leaves, peppers look like miniature pumpkins when ripe. I grew in a poor red clay soil in Raleigh NC, medium sun.
A properly made tomato pie is hard to beat and a good use for a little of your pounds and pounds. We make little pizzas on English muffins with very little needed to make them good, but it doesn't use much.
As for the plot, consider growing peanuts. They are easy to grow, low pretty plants, and well tended will provide an ample harvest. I did that when I had the space because I was and still am addicted to boiled green peanuts. Not the canned stuff, or the gas station stuff, but honest to goodness boiled before the peanuts dry stuff. Incredible flavor and fun to do with a crowd. Nothing better in the world with a cold beer, either.
Never tried to make tomato pie. Do you have the recipe for the topping? Assume I just dice them up, cook them down and mash with the right spices.
Sorry, no. My wife made them but it's been a couple of decades since then. I think the main thing is don't scrimp on the ingredients. No healthier shortcuts, or calorie cutter changes. Look at a bunch of recipes, but the topping is usually cheese, and basil a main ingredient.
English muffin pizza was a staple of my childhood diet
French bread pizza was a staple of my college/early career diet. I never had the luxury of home grown tomatoes, though. Was more of a Pizza Quick and shredded mozzarella formulation.

Home grown tomatoes are so much better than store bought.
I've been eating homegrown tomato sandwiches since the middle of July! So, so much better than store bought. They go great on salads too. Also, sliced homegrown tomatoes for breakfast with bacon, eggs, and toast... it don't get no better.
For todays game it's chili beans with lots of diced homegrown tomatoes. I'll be eating my first of several bowls at kickoff.
I hate you guys...so much. I cannot grow tomatoes to save my life. I've tried everything. I can grow pretty much anything else...tomatoes are my great white whale. Feel free to rub it in and tell me how great they are :)
The Wife here, my garden plot happens to be where Campbells soup used to grow their tomatoes. So sorry, tomatoes just naturally grow. :)

Birthday games are the best/worst. Many fun trips around the country and to Blacksburg to see the Hokies but that has included 2012 UNC, 2014 PITT losses., 2019 Miami win in person. But plenty of wins from the couch, hopefully this weekend is a win.

This is still Pry's team. Monty has done more with less, but he's playing with one hand behind his back. There's no chance he is retained, but this isn't on him.

Monty didn't get much of a chance to influence the clock.
You can still decide to run the ball. It either forces them to call timeouts or the clock runs. They scored with 10 seconds left and no timeouts. Didn't have to alter it much. Receiver on the 3rd down play has to know to kneel down instead of running out of bounds as well. These are the same dumb mistakes as last year where 5 of our 6 regular season losses were directly related to decisions in final two minutes of first half.

It seems like they're expecting the run, because they've bottled him up a bunch and forcing Drones to make passes, which he isn't doing consistently enough to win. It's a solid strategy.

He should have been fired with Pry and yet he's been allowed to remain, because this admin knows only incompetence and half-measures. We're supposed to feel better because Whit *has no part in the search*, while he's going out and telling Bill Roth how excited he is for another year and a chance to "get football right". We are actively diminishing our coaching candidate pool by allowing Whit Babcock within a mile of Merryman.
So yeah. As much as the romanticism of rallying behind an interim felt nice after a win like last week, I don't want this admin to be absolved of the embarrassment of their decisions and what they've allowed this program to become. This is the bed they made. Now fucking lie in it.

It's not too late...but is for our play calling. We're going try and score on every play vs trying to check down or outside run our way down the field. There's 2:20 left. That's enough for 8-10 plays (counting a few clock plays).
There's no way we would trust our players to execute a coordinated effort like that.

This looks like the only game we had a shot at for the rest of the year. So that bodes poorly for the rest of the season, especially given Wake being a not good team.

Agree. But, in fairness, it's not like he gets a lot of help. Terrible pass blocking, terrible coaching, mediocre receivers at best ... I'm no Drones fan and have been begging for someone else to get a chance, but it's not all his fault.
There are a decent number of drops, but Gosnell was pretty much automatic last year if you got the ball near his hands. Where have the passes to him been? Plus, the receivers can't catch balls at their feet, it's way harder to catch when it's a fair amount over your head or behind you. Drones isn't doing our receivers any favors. It's not like he's hitting them in the hands or chest every time and they just aren't making the catches. That's true some of the time, but I'd say 2/3 of the time, the ball isn't well placed. That's a Drones problem, not a receiver problem.
Holds onto the ball too long, gets deer in headlights against any pass rush, and can't hit the broad side of a cruise ship on any route. He doesn't have help, but he's absolutely terrible. There's a reason our offense looks as awful as it does when we can't run the ball
It's hard to pass much judgment on our receiving corps because Drones just can't get them the ball. We don't really know what we have because the QB is so ineffective. Just so slow.
Agree. There are some other overall issues, but a better QB could make this offense more functional. Drones is just crap. He's by far the biggest thing holding the offense back. Just play Rangel or Pop at this point.

Snaps have to get better. Hitting the qb at shin level over and over starts the play in such a bad position. Eyes drop immediately when he should be reading the d. Not giving anyone much chance doing that.
1) Get a turnover within the 10 yard line and fail to score a touchdown
2) Give the ball back with less than 2 minutes in the first half and give up a touchdown
3) Go 4 and out during your 2 minute drill
4) Lose a 1 score game

I was at the game, decided to decompress and took apart the Central Boiler for fall cleaning, and now have several questions for the TV audience.
From the stands, it appeared there were at least three instances where Wake clearly hit early and should have been pass interference with no call. Were the stands right and our refs needed glasses.
Not sure exactly when but there appeared to be clear targeting on one play committed by Wake. No flag on the field, but the refs stood around for about a minute acting like they were waiting for booth initiated review. When none was called they eventually moved on to the next play. The next play they called a 15 yard penalty on Wake. The impression in the stands was that they figure the booth always initiates review so they don't have to call it on the field anymore then were embarrassed when the booth skipped it and gave us a make up call the next play.
Last thought, the offense has to call roll out passes or runs on third down. Drones has no pocket awareness and eats way to many sacks from holding onto the ball to long.

There were a few times when Wake should have been called for PI, they were hitting the receivers before the ball got there.
For the targeting call, there was one replay angle that appeared to show the defender's helmet hit the chest/shoulder area and his shoulder pad hit the helmet of our receiver. It should have been reviewed so that we could see it in slow motion to know what happened.
Stewart injured his shoulder and was held out of the rest of the game.
The Stewart injury should have been reviewed for targeting/late hit. His injury was a direct result of crown of helmet hit defender dove head first after Stewart was tackled. I am worried Stewart may have a broken collarbone as that what he was grabbing at on the sidelines after

The second was should have been called in the first place. Even when it wasn't should have been reviewed. Yes he missed the hit hth. But you clearly see him lowering his head with the intent to hit hth. Just because he missed (because the other tackled pulled him slightly away) doesn't make it a penalty.
Was there a single review yesterday? I remember think it late in the game but didn't go back to check.
I don't mind the loss, it was close enough that I am complaining about the refs. It is also nice to know that we were right in our complaints.
There were 4 by my count and two happened basically right in front of us where we were sitting. Both were missed by the same field judge as it happened right in front of him. The first one he wasn't even watching, he was fiddling with something on his wrist and after the play was over one of our coaches came over and said something to him. The whole time he was looking at his arm/wrist.
