So Joe, how many trips will we make out to Stone Bridge this year?
You read my mind.
I was actually thinking today about heading out to the local schools to watch some games to get a firsthand look at the kids we're targeting.
uva is in
better position with those guys than tech is ... i think.
still early.
That film of Allen didn't impress me. The kid is explosive, and he is huge for a soph (in that tape), but his pad level is absolutely terrible. A good OL can get in his chest and put him on roller skates.
DW needs to show up
Drive by and wave in his new whip! Don't stop to talk.

Virginia QBs
Can someone please explain to me the rationale behind offering only Bucky Hodges and not any of the other QBs in VA? I understand that they REALLY want him but is he really the best QB in VA? Hackenburg has offers from Alabama and Miami. It seems to me that VT should also be offering some of them instead of putting all of our eggs in the Bucky Hodges basket. VT is going to look pretty stupid if they don't get him and haven't offered any of the other QBs in VA too.
Strategy
VT did the same thing with the recruitment of Tyrod Taylor. Some QB's want to know that they are the only QB being recruited so they know there won't be any competition. It's also enforcing to that QB, he's going to "the man" if he chooses VT. The coaches must be pretty confident on this kids ability since they're not offering anyone else. They must also think they have a pretty good shot with him. If Hodges does choose VT he's got to know he'll probably be the starter by 2014.
If VT can land him, I think the days of our undersized QB's are over.
VT has put
2 undersized QBs into the NFL. Talent is talent. But I agree, talent in the form of 6'6" 250 lbs size 18 shoes is better.
History shows
VT has put more than two QBs in the NFL. Druckenmiller and Don Strock were taller prototype NFL QBs. There were others that made rosters or scout teams. Despite the many NFL draftees and players we still don't seem to be known as a school that can get you to the next level. If you have the size adn ability it probably doesn't matter which school you attend.
his offer
edit: i'll take that back. maybe they don't offer him .. vt has already offered 4 QBs for 2013
Bucky Hodges, Virginia
Carlis Parker, North Carolina
Riley Ferguson, North Carolina
Anthony Jennings, Georgia
and they dont offer players just because other teams do (that would be UVA) .. they may offer him at some point if they dont get an early commit from one of these guys .. but maybe they've looked at tape and arent ready to do that yet
Michael Parker
Beamer and Gray were in good ole' Fauquier checking in on Michael Parker at Kettle Run today. Hopefully they checked out Teller in Liberty also.
positioned well for ...
not a given, but these guys below vt seems to be positioned pretty well for...
Hodges
Reid
Parker
Newsome
Fisher
Teller
Rolin
Wingo-Reeves
Fuller
Clark
Obviously we're going to need a QB
So Bucky would be a huge get, but I can't possibly be the only one who really really wants another Fuller in orange and maroon for 4 years.
#ALLOFTHEFULLERS
It wouldn't be Tech without one Fuller in uniform.
I thought Kendall was supposed to be a good recruit, better than Kyle. Well, potentially.
Temuchin?
Like Ghengis Khan? That is a badass name.
Parker Osterloh Offered

Landing him would be huge. Read on to see why.
http://recruit757.com/2011/07/19/warhill-lineman-gets-early-offer/
Another TE recruit for the O-line...
Nah all joking aside though, that could be one big dude, and one that actually fits the mold of an O-linemen... Sounds like its good that we're getting the early start that we did.
What a name!
OSTERLOH is the coolest name for a tight end possibly ever. Just sounds like running fools over is a job in which he takes great pleasure.
An Extra Nugget on Jake Kite
I have seen Jake a lot this winter as he has hit the mat with the Hidden Valley wrestling team. Very talented kid who always seems to place high in his weight class. He is wrestling at 170, so he cut a little from the 182 listed, expect him to be between 185-200 next season.
While I much prefer Rivals over ESPN recruiting, ESPN is the only site with rankings up for 2013. Are there any ESPN Insiders here that could relay if any of our target on the list? I'm curious.
http://insider.espn.go.com/college-sports/recruiting/football/story?id=7...
FWIW
Levenberry, Burns, Fuller, Hackenberg, Allen, Green and O'Daniel all made it on ESPN's watch list. Take it for what its worth.
Did we offer Hackenberg?
Can anyone confirm this?

Also, the target board has been updates. Thanks everyone for helping out!

I think is a really great year to have a selective recruiting class. There's a lot of talent in Virginia, although we're going to really have to rely on out of state offensive lineman to get to the 5 or 6 we need.
VA all over
the Rivals 100. 7 players on the list. I don't think I've ever noticed VA represented so well. Looks like Beamer and co. will have great challenges to keep them in state.
Interesting, Ryan Burns, the top QB in VA and #4 in the country, has not received an offer from VT. I guess VT has their reasons, and we'll see where their token Bucky Hodges charts in the top 250 tomorrow. In general, I trust VT's player evaluation over Rivals, so let's hope Beamer and co. are right in this case as well.
Playing Time?
Though my knowledge is scant on the recruit, could it be a desire to start right away or a true dislike of the idea of redshirting? To have a QB with that much developing hype reminds me of this young QB we got out of Hampton in 2007....not saying same playing style, just hype. I hope we do take a good long look and I have faith the staff will and will then decide what is best for the program.
dont quite
understand what you're saying .. or asking .. but some positions/players can get ready/are ready to play as true freshman.
For a QB to expect to play immediately in a BCS conference is pretty crazy. Unless you're GT's QB .. I mean really. Bucky would be looking at redshirting for a year, likely learning under LT and Leal .. and then possibly sitting behind Leal with cleanup time for a season .. with 3 seasons of eligibility left. That method seems to work, though Leal could end up starting 2 years I believe.
That's why
I was asking about PT/Redshirting- the thought popped in my head maybe he wanted to see the field right away at the QB spot. I like the idea of him taking in the system for two years in order to develop as well but sometimes a kid wants to see the field right away and with LT3's last year of eligibility plus another year behind Leal, it would make no sense for him to come to Tech if he only wants to stay on the college level three to four years or feels he can be an impact player right from day one. Though I am speculating, it could be a logical explanation as to why we haven't offered him yet, hence why I asked if anyone knew the recruit's feelings on the matter.
you're speaking of Burns? Most people that I've read that have an educated take think that he's way overrated and still very raw (out of VA's top 3 QBs). Also, he and Hackenberg are more pro-style QBs and VT tends to go more for a dual-threat type .. which neither one of them are. They've offered one QB in VA -- Bucky .. and he is at the top of their list. Some say that they've held off on offering other VA QBs to show him the love .. They may not offer either Burns or Hackenberg at all for these reasons (they've offered 3 or 4 QBs already, one in VA).
Yup I was...
Very interesting take. Offering one VA QB makes sense for many reasons, one of which being that the staff can focus on him. Like I said in the original post I know next to nothing about most of these recruits and am waiting until next season to see what they do as seniors. I figured that, at this point, if the staff has offered a scholarship, then they must be pretty good. Thanks for the info- I am going to check more on him and Bucky.
yeah not saying that Burns and Hackenberg aren't good (they seem very good) .. just saying that I don't think they're the type of QB that VT is looking for. Bucky is more in the mold of Logan Thomas. He's about the same height, about 20 or so lbs lighter, but may be better developed (passing, read-wise) than LT was at the high school level
Elite 11 Watch: Virginia QB Ryan Burns
The Four-Letter really likes this kid a lot.
http://espn.go.com/blog/high-school/football/post/_/id/5159/elite-11-wat...
13 TDs and 14 INTs ?? Obviously kid's got skills but little experience starting against big-time high school football players. Mad skills don't always translate to the field. Whoever gets him is taking a calculated-risk in my opinion and getting a 5* rating primarily from showing in a camp? Please .. He seems like he'll be a good one though. Just dont think VT's interested. If they were, they would've offered by now .. or maybe he's not interested. I know Hackenberg has been looking for a VT offer .. but haven't even seen Ryan Burns and VT mentioned in the same sentence.
Early Commits?
Anybody have any idea who may commit early? Last year we started strong and I loved how JC Coleman's early commitment helped bring in more quality players.
Maybe Fuller??
When Kyle was recruited, he committed pretty early in July. If Kendall makes a similar move, the impact on the 2013 Hokie class will be huge.
Also, the longer he waits to commit, I think the more likely he goes somewhere else. He already has 17 offers, including Florida, FSU, OSU, and OU. The list is only going to get longer. If he wants to go to VT, he already knows. He knows the school, he knows the players, he knows the coaches, and he knows VT puts DBs into the NFL (Vincent already there and Kyle will be the next great DB to be drafted, hopefully in 2 years not 1). His family is obviously pro-Hokie, so unless he wants to be different, carve his own path sort of thing, he'll probably commit early. He's VT's recruit to lose, and if they lose him, it won't be their fault, it'll be because Kendall wanted something else. But if they lock him up early, VT gets a major recruiter on their side and the Fuller legacy lives on.
Good points on Fuller
Especially the longer he waits, the more likely he goes somewhere else.
I think Bucky Hodges is another possibility. VT has been recruiting him hard for a while and shown him special attention by not going after other QB prospects. Also, QBs don't typically wait deep into their senior years as compared to other positions.
Kind of makes me wish
we didn't sign such a huge class this year. With VA being so well represented in the top 100 and our needing to sign a bunch of OL, hopefully it doesn't end up hurting us. I'm guessing we'll still take ~16 of so guys, so hopefully we can be more selective and get the guys we want.
Big class was a good thing
This way going into 2013 we can target needs with much more attention. Focusing on 16 guys versus 28 allows for more research, involvment, etc in the recruiting process. I'm excited and hope we fill the lineage of Fuller's. You'd hope All three big brothers would try to pull Kendall in.
Yeah I agree
it definitely helps as far as sheer numbers and being able to go more in-depth with our targets, but harder to sell "come here and contribute sooner" with huge class right before was my thinking. Hopefully Frank and Co. can really narrow down their target list and get their guys, though. A good VA class means more in state battles with UVA, and I'm thinking if we crush them again (which we should, I just don't see them getting that much better this next year) I don't know if London can peddle those tears of change to the top kids again.
Good Call
vthokie49- I agree with you on UVA. I think that they are making strides in the right direction but I don't see them getting much better at all. In fact, with some of their top guys graduating I can see them taking a step back in the division.

There's a lot of high quality talent VT is going after. This recruiting cycle is going to be exciting, and could be our best ever. Also, I'm sure I missed a few. Let me know if you find more.
4 Stars ouside of Rivals 250
The list was just released. VT targets among them were Dorian Johnson and Marcus Newby.

Keyante Green
After watching the highlights of several of the running backs on the above list, the one that really caught my eye was Keyante Green. Now before I continue, I'm just a college kid and not by any means a legitimate evaluator of talent, but from what I saw this kid stood out. He had several long TD's, and what most impressed me was that it just seemed like the other team couldn't get him down, no matter how many bodies were trying to drag him to the ground. I specifically compared his highlights to Derrick Green's, and I was far more impressed by Keyante. This could be because he was playing behind a better o-line/against worse competition etc, but does anyone know where we stand with this kid or anything along those lines???
We're in good standing with him.

Here's an excerpt from an interview Thomas did last June with CanesInsider.
It appears as if he's changed his mind.
Hmm
Hopefully this doesn't turn into a Jawand Blue situation.
He is pretty close with Manning so I think if VT offers he is all Hokie
Do recruits
pay their own way for junior day, spring game, and weekends of that sort? Or, can the University provide assistance? It seems that it would be difficult for someone from Miami (or any long distant city) to make that trip without assistance. And going to multiple events would seem to make it very costly for recruits.
Anybody know how this works?
I think the only way a school is allowed to reimburse costs
of travel is for official visits. I am pretty sure anything else is not permitted. I may even be wrong about official visits.
Offical NCAA Definitions of visits
"Any visit to a college campus by a college-bound student-athlete or his or her parents paid for by the college is an official visit. Visits paid for by college-bound student-athletes or their parents are unofficial visits.
During an official visit the college can pay for transportation to and from the college for the prospect, lodging and three meals per day for both the prospect and the parent or guardian, as well as reasonable entertainment expenses including three tickets to a home sports event.
The only expenses a college-bound student-athlete may receive from a college during an unofficial visit are three tickets to a home sports event."
5-star
Kendall would be the best recruit in this class by a mile. He has a legitimate shot at top 10 in the country, depending on how the SEC-plus-OSU-plus-Irish recruiting service politics play out.
he would
be the best recruit that we've landed in YEARS .. since T2 .. he's overall #4 (#1 cb) in the initial rivals100 .. so yeah -- he's a big deal .. not to mention that landing him would increase our chances of landing LB Dorian O'Daniel from GC who is the overall #37 (#7 LB) ... landing both of them .. especially early .. would be monumental for VT recruiting.
Agree 100%
I couldn't agree more. Landing Fuller at all would be huge, landing him early would be monumental. Talking about getting the attention of the other big targets... WOW!! This could also get the attention of other guys, Rivals 100, Army All Americans, Under Armour All Americans, etc. that were not targeted but would definitely consider being part of an extraordinary recruiting class. Fuller could change the whole landscape and outlook of the 2013 class by committing this spring-summer. If he is coming to play with Kyle he should have a pretty good idea by now anyway so it shouldn't be a long drawn out process decision. I have heard someone else on here say and agree the longer he waits the more our chances of landing him diminish.
Fuller has
named a top 8, according to his high school twitter account.
This is his top 8.
GC Football @gcfootball
"2013 #GC ATH Kendall Fullers top 8 schools as of today are #Michigan #Tennesee #FSU #Alabama #Clemson #VaTech #Terps #SouthCarolina"
I would've embedded the tweet, but I'm not smart enough. How do we embed tweets?
Anyways, so by naming a top 8 early, he at least is thinking about it and could make an early decision. Best part of the top 8 (besides VT being in it of course), no UVA. It's also nice to see more ACC than SEC, as well. I have also noticed, when it comes to Kendall Fuller recruiting, most "experts" are talking Alabama and Maryland. Alabama because Saban can get virtually any player he wants. Maryland because of Diggs. I don't know why experts are overlooking VT, considering the Fuller legacy.
Is Tech's
Junior day this weekend and if so do we know who is coming?
dont think he'll be there
but if i had to guess, he'll be at the spring game .. he won't go to UMD .. mark it down .. i don't think that he and diggs are THAT tight ..
most think his top 4 are (and probably in this order):
1. vt
2. clemson
3. bama
4. michigan
actually
check that .. it looks like he will be for junior day
Dorian Johnson Notes
via http://pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/highschool/s_781288.html
I don't think we stand a chance at landing him, but he'd be a great get.
11W Interviews Smoke Mizzell
He has no favorites, and doesn't plan to make a decision anytime soon. The whole read is here: http://www.elevenwarriors.com/2012/02/catching-up-with-taquan-mizzell.
Here's some new film.
The kid definitely has some moves, extremely shifty with a knack for getting away from the pile.
Cameron Dillard
He can be added to the VT target list. I can't remember the last time we pulled somebody out of Michigan, though.
http://247sports.com/Article/Offensive-guard-Cameron-Dillard-visits-Va-T...
Is this real life?
Not sure if
that's a legit 40-time, but at 6', 215 that would be incredible to land him. In Shane we trust.
he looks great
but i don't see the 40 time being legit .. not in film that i've seen anyway. based on what i've seen -- mizzelle looks the fastest .. jabo lee looks pretty damned fast too .. and ryan green looks good (though i'd be surprised if we landed him). i'm sure we'd LOVE to have derrick green but all signs point to him going OOS .. i haven't seen daniel (dj) reid on film but most in the know think that we have a good shot with him and Lee.
Hokies offer Burkes
Paul Tenorio reports the Hokies have offered LB/WR Oren Burks. Burks attends South County, the same high school as the Vandyke brothers.
Quick impressions from his film: he's always around the ball, and has a burst coming off of the edge.
VT looks strong with...
VT looks strong with Deon Newsome, Wyatt Teller, Matt Rolin, Bucky Hodges, Daniel Reid, and Kendall Fuller.
Dorian O'Daniel's leader is Michigan, followed by Florida and Clemson. I don't think we'll land him unless Fuller commits early, then gets in Dorian's ear about playing with him at VT.

http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1333694
This is from a bird, well, actually, a couple of them, Harris too. Although, he's visiting UVA this weekend and looks to be taking all five of his official visits.
until he visits everyone
he could just be excitable.
Don't think you can count on an early Fuller Commitment
Considering the GC Twitter account also announced O'Daniel is to announce on the same day, I don't think it was entirely Kendall's decision to wait this long. It sounds more like a GC/Rivals/NBC collusion to ensure good press and ratings right before signing day. A little bit of downer for Hokie fans who were looking to lock him up early. Oh well, maybe Fisher can be the one to influence other highly-rated recruits into Blacksburg this year. An early Bucky signing would be huge as well.
I know there are some much highly
regarded prospects on this target board but just a quick look at his film and the Shegog kid looks like a play maker on both sides of the ball he sticks his foot in the ground and gets up field in a hurry could be a solid rover
Kicker Dillon Christopher
Good read summarizing his visit last Saturday. It looks like Tech is his number one choice, but we'd probably have to match any scholarship offers. There aren't many scholarship kickers, but not many can kick 60-yard field goals in high school.
http://recruit757.com/2012/02/20/menchville-kicker-talks-hokies/
He went to Menchville, he must be awesome
Sorry, brief moment of pride in my high school coming through.

Thanks for the update! I'm going to update the board for Monday.
Hackenberg is off the board
Committed to Penn State yesterday.
Donta Wilkins
I only noticed because I was scoping OL targets... Looks like Donta Wilkins is listed twice, and it shows we have offered on one of the entries, and that we haven't on the other. Not important, but I wanted to point it out to the fine editors of the best Hokie blog out there.
Fixed
I created a second entry for him in the database I used to store all the targets in. I truly appreciate the help, you guys keeping me honest and helping out with the updates!
Hokies interested in LB Jamieon Moss
He's committed to ECU, but the ACC schools, including Tech, are starting to recruit him.

If true, even stronger chance for VT to get Bucky
bucky
never going to uva.
Ohio State
I think it's the Buckeyes + Meyer we should worry about.
Agree
It looks like Bucky + Bowens both interested in Buckeyes.
I don't like
that Meyer guy. Don't like him one bit. VT needs to win this one.

word on the street is that Anthony Shegog will be committing to VT later today

Malaki Roy
thoughts
Joe, what do you make of Malaki Roy? Should we offer? Sounds like he's all about playing for the Hokies so was wondering if he would be a good gain or not. Thanks!
Well, he doesn't have any I-A offers that I know of, but schools (Tech and UVa included) are interested. He's visited both us and the Hoos, but prefers us more. He's a smaller receiver too, 5-10 or 5-11 and runs a 4.5. Some highlights are below.
He makes some great plays on the ball, but he might be as athletically gifted as other kids his age. I'm speculating here, but he could be a late or walk-on offer.
josh outlaw
committed to florida yesterday (4/7/12)
Tim Harris to UVA
Rivals has it as a soft verbal, but it's not too big a surprise either way.
Tim Harris later tweeted
Before that a couple of Hokies were talking crap to him about going to UVA....which he then relayed to Cequan Jefferson (who I'm guessing is his friend)
Please for the love of God don't make an ass out of Hokienation just because some of these kids don't have protected Twitters. If you're talking to anyone else, you're an ambassador to Virginia Tech. Please don't give us a bad rap just because you're mad at a highschool kid making his own decision. Keep it classy out there, guys.
Cosign this 100%
To the people who do this, just don't. These athletes, are kids, and they're doing what they believe is best for their, and their family's, future. Talking shit, to them is just stupid and will hurt Tech in the long run. They all know each other, they all talk, and just like social media has made it easier for you to harass them, it's made it easier for them to talk and for a bad rep to spread. Don't be fucking idiots.
Beware
There could be UVa trolls pretending to be Hokie fans. I don't trust the internet.
dorian o'daniel has committed to clemson as well.
O' daniel says he wants fuller to join him at clemson and looks like green is leaning towards clemson as well
from
sources that i trust -- o'daniel's decision with have ZERO effect on fuller's decision ... not saying that he won't end up there -- just saying it won't be because of dod
I hope not
Would love to see 2 fullers on the field at the same time..
Any idea
which recruits will be in town this weekend for the game?
I have seen tweets saying Wyatt Teller and D'Shaun Hand (a 2014er) will be there. Hopefully Fuller and Allen will be there too.
What I've heard, read, or seen Tweeted. I'm sure there are more.
All of the current 2013 commits (Cequan Jefferson, Anthony Shegog, Holland Fisher, David Prince).
David Prince is especially excited.
All three Salem kids: LB Andrew Motu'apuaka, QB Bucky Hodges and WR Kwamane Bowens.
DB Kendall Fuller will be there.
QB Corwin Cutler
Derrick Green will be at either our game or tOSU's.
I'm sure we'll hear more names as plans are finalized. Leave 'em here if you catch anything.
I heard Fuller will be in town with Vinny (and obviously Kyle and Corey). Maybe a good sign?
Here's a comprehensive list of Visitors for the Spring Game
http://www.sportshoopla.com/forums/virginia-tech/68420-spring-game-visit...
Any guesses on who commits this weekend? I'm guessing Osterloh and maybe Fuller. By Fuller's tweets, he wants to commit and he's always so hyped to see his brothers. He's too much apart the "VT family" to commit elsewhere. I would say Bucky as well, since his options are beginning to become limited and he's already a strong VT lean, but he seems too laid back to commit early. We'll see.
I heard somewhere Fuller wasn't planning on committing until the Army All-American game.
I've heard that too, it was a twitter posting saying Fuller and O'Daniel were supposed to commit that day. Since O'Daniel has already committed to Clemson though, I feel like Fuller might commit before then as well
Yea
That's what I think. Since his HS teammates are all committing, he may commit soon as well. One week ago, he also tweeted:
If he plans to commit to VT
I am okay if he delays to the AA game. It's about time someone committing to VT did it at that game. It would be a big shout out to us.
i disagree
the earlier kendall fuller commits, the more it helps with the rest of the class .. not to mention, the coaches can shift their focus to the rest of their targets ... i think a previous poster was right .. o'daniels was supposed to wait also but he didn't. there are a few GC kids left .. but aside from getting his boys some looks, when kendall fuller knows where he's gonna commit, i think he may go ahead and do it .. to help him team
btw -- we just landed carlis parker too
I heard about a tweet yesterday from Hodges about the best talent from '13 and '14 "playing for in-state powerhouse VT" or something to that effect. His twitter is private, so I can't verify it. Anyone else see this? That definitely seems like a good sign to me
Also heard that Smoke Mizzell is trying hard to make it to the game. Everything points to him being a UVA lean, but he'd be a huge get for this class, even though it seems like we are only taking one RB
it was a retweet .. nonetheless, he liked it enough to retweet it
@JayHolmes_ @bucky757 How about the best in the "13" & "14" class come together and play your college ball for in-state powerhouse #VT :-D
rumor has it that bucky will be committing this weekend .. fuller ??? don't know about that but it does make sense that with o'daniel committing ... if kendall already knows where he's going -- and if it's VT -- he'll go ahead and commit.
other folks think that we may be getting commits from some of the following:
osterloh, pfaff, dj reid, wyatt teller, newsome
it is interesting that smoke is really trying to make it too -- he seems more interested in VT than people think but most think he's still uva-bound .. i think he's oos bound
another thing -- jaylen holmes, andrew brown, and da'shawn hand from class of '14 will all be in attendance .. this is huge .. hand and brown are TOTAL studs (5*) .. getting them on campus for this early is HUGE .. word is quin blanding .. another prospective 5* may be there too.
vt is sure to get 1 or more commits this weekend .. question is -- who?
Bayside
From everything I've heard, both Smoke and Blanding are UVa leans at this point. It does bode well for us if they're in Blacksburg for the spring game, the atmosphere will make Festivus look like a m Pop Warner game. Virginia does have a nice Bayside pipeline going: Henry Coley, Demetrious Nicholson, Anthony Cooper, so who knows.
Hope Bucky commits, Fuller aswell. I'm not banking on Fuller though. I'd say Bucky's chances are greater than Fullers.
Charles Clark has committed to #DBU
Ryheem Lockley
I haven't seen, and can't find, anything saying we've offered Ryheem. Are we sure on that?
@joe - when you have the chance to update your board:

Jonathan Allen has committed to Alabama
apparently holland fisher got an offer from nick saban, how worried should we be about this?
no need to be worried at all
Don't like Saban
The fact he offers to commits means he has no respect.
haven't heard too much buzz about greg gilmore lately. ive heard that he has a pretty good relationship with charley wiles, do we have a shot at landing him?
Virginia Rankings Update
Rivals recently came out with an updated top 30 for Virginia.
http://rivals.yahoo.com/footballrecruiting/football/recruiting/rankings/...
Kind of stinks that we probably won't get any of the players in that top 5 and maybe only 1 in the top 10.
Not a good sign?
If more than 25% of the top 20 players and about 50% of the top 10 go out of state what does it say about college football in the Commonwealth? Is this a typical statistic for most states? How many should be staying in-state? What is considered successful in-state recruiting?
i think
that it's a combination of a few things ... first of all, virginia is pretty talent-loaded, relative to most states but there are only 1 1/2 d1 football programs. we only have so many spots per year, this being a smaller year. and you have to look at each prospect individually regarding virginia tech.
- burns and hackenberg never got an offer from us -- they're not our type of back and we got the one we wanted (hodges)
- allen lived in alabama for the brunt of his life and is a childhood tide fan -- it was always a long shot with him
- levenberry NEVER had ANY interest in either of the in-state schools. he was michigan or fsu pretty much from the get-go
- mizzell -- bayside hs = uva pipeline .. with vt's rb depth, he is a long shot
- derrick green -- we're in it but with our rb depth, a probably #2 or #3 for him right now (behind clemson and osu)
- matt rolin may have a brother who walked on at vt .. but he is a lifelong, gamecock legacy (i think his dad and grandfather both went there) .. everyone else was a long shot
- wyatt teller with either be a hokie or hoo
- doug randolph committed to stanford early .. obviously getting a TOP NOTCH education was big on his list and he likely reached out to him. neither uva or vt had a chance (though some hoos still seem to believe that he may be swayed to uva)
we ended up with the qbs (yes..that's plural) that we wanted, the top two OL in the state, will likely end up with the best cb in the country (and possibly the #1 recruit in the country in the end). we'll end up with a SMALL class and still end up with a top 25 class most likely. not sure what you really expect. vt is branching out and recruiting in more states now. i'd say that, because of the in-state talent that we have combined with the lack of legit d1 schools, that the ratio is lower than most states.
So
By your definition it is a successful year. It just seems to be the same story year after year.
If you look at the Rivals list for Alabama you see that probably 80% of the top twenty are going to either Auburn or Alabama. That to me says there is shame in going out of state. Right now there is no shame for Virginia players to go out of state. Maybe it is just demographics, in that Virginia has a more transient population.
I will know we have arrived as a super power in football when most of the top players stay in state and feel ashamed to go elsewhere.
I agree but losses hurt
I agree with you man, we need to lock down more of the top, super talented VIRGINIANS, but until we win some bcs bowls and prove that we can put them in a program that will win the big games and be in the spotlight consistently (not ACC spotlight but real national spotlight... again, not ACC spotlight, national spotlight) then they will continue to leave for those super powers you mention...
how to get to that level is the biggest dilemma Hokie Nation faces

Thank you Sir, I'm going to do a mass update after we know Teller's decision. So both 2013 and 2014 lists will be updated this weekend.
Awesome
Our list is going to look pretty darn good if we land Teller too.
Obvious addition
Wyatt Teller - Virginia Tech
Also
OL Joshua Outlaw has decommitted from Florida.
Wow, LSU got the Jennings QB kid from Georgia. I really would have liked for the Hokies to get him. I know that they have 3 QBs in Bucky, Parker, and Prince coming in, but I thought he threw the ball the best of the bunch, while being a very effective runner from the spread.
Jennings looked far and away the best on film, but Hodges was our primary target. I guess the coaches saw more long term potential. I hope they're right.
Dorian Johnson
He decommitted from Penn last week and now has us in his top 3 along with Ohio State and Pitt. Pitt is probably in the lead, but he will have an official visit to Blacksburg (and the two others) and decide afterwards.
Any insider knowledge anybody has on his decision, would be greatly appreciated.
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1289533-penn-state-football-5-star-ol...
Dropped us out of his top 2
Happened a couple of days ago, cut down to 2 and we were dropped
Damn that sucks
We don't need him anyway haha
thanks for the info
I don't think we're out of it.
When he named the top 3, we knew we were number 3. In an interview he was asked who was leading for him and he called it a tie between Pitt and Ohio State. We are the dark horse and if we can get him down for a visit then we have a shot.
he didn't cut down to 2 .. just said that pitt and tosu were his top 2 ... but he does seem to be down to 3, us included ... i'd say that we are DEFINITELY on the outside looking in and it's very doubtful we land him ... the only reason i could see him coming to vt is early PT .. with his skills, i doubt that he would redshirt (and that's rare for an OL at vt)...he could be in the 2 deep at a t-FR and starting as a t-SO ... he's that good
hokies looking good
the match up between Taquan 'Smoke' Mizzell bayside (UVA 5 star Commit) vs Bucky Hodges salem (VT Commit/ Logan Thomas 2.0) lasts night high school game.
Taquan 'Smoke' Mizzell - - 4Rec. 9Yds; 4Car. 1Yd.
Bucky Hodges - - 15-24 for 248Yds. 2-2TD/Int. ratio; 9Car. 18Yds.
salem 37
bayside 7
numbers never lie
Bucky looked good
I was there too! Bucky looked real good, he was off on some throws but thats expected. His long ball arm is already there, he's gonna have to work on the accuracy part but all the skills are there. I was gonna do a write up like last week but seemed like nobody cared so I didn't bother haha.
Mizzell's 9 receiving yards came on one play. He was a complete non factor.
Bucky & Motuapuaka 's team dominates Mizzell's team. Sign of things to come! haha
Really only one interception
Oh and he really only had one interception.
The second int was a bad call on behalf of the refs. It was a mutual possession kind of thing, then the receiver and defender rolled out the back of the endzone and the defender came away with it after they were both well out of bounds. If I was officiating, it would have been an incomplete pass due to them both rolling out of bounds with the ball. At least that's what I saw.
Daesan Hamilton has committed to penn state (yesterday)
